Approved by Rosenior: “World-class” £60k-p/w star now prime Chelsea target

A “world-class” star has now emerged as Chelsea’s prime target to replace Robert Sanchez, and new manager Liam Rosenior has given the green light.

Blues still looking to replace Sanchez

Although Sanchez has arguably improved this season, after receiving widespread criticism for his performances in the 2024-25 campaign, the Blues remain keen on bringing in a new option between the sticks.

It may seem a little harsh to replace the Spaniard, given that he has recorded a clean sheet percentage of 43.2% per 90 over the past year, placing him in the 94th percentile, compared to other goalkeepers.

However, the west Londoners started identifying potential targets ahead of the transfer window, and in November it was revealed they were willing to make a move for Barcelona shot-stopper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Since then, there has been a change in manager, with Rosenior’s appointment recently being confirmed, but the new boss has approved a move for a goalkeeper, and AC Milan star Mike Maignan has now been identified as a prime target.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states Chelsea are lining up a move for a long-term Sanchez replacement, and a number of potential targets have been identified, including Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen.

However, the AC Milan goalkeeper is the number one choice, and Rosenior has approved the move to bring in an elite goalkeeper, with BlueCo aiming to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

"World-class Maignan may not be upgrade on Sanchez

Both Maignan and Sanchez have conceded an average of 1.05 non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, but Sanchez has a far better clean sheet percentage at 43.2%, compared to 31.6% from the Frenchman.

Prior to his exit, Enzo Maresca also lauded the former Brighton man, saying: “I think Robert, in terms of saving, he has been always good since I joined the club. In terms of build-up, he struggled a little bit.

“But I said since day one, our build-up depends a little bit on how the other team press so sometimes we go long, sometimes we go short.

“I think Robert’s game against Arsenal has been one of his best games also in build-up because we played also some goal kicks short when we arrived in the other box.”

That said, the 30-year-old, who pockets a tidy £60k-a-week, is set to be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, with his AC Milan contract due to expire, which means he could be a low-risk addition to Rosenior’s squad.

Having also been lauded as “world-class” by writer Carlo Garganese, the 37-time France international could be a savvy signing for the Blues, but he would by no means be a necessary addition to Rosenior’s squad.

Lallana happy to stay a Southampton

Club captain Adam Lallana says he could stay at Southampton for the rest of his career after signing a new long-term contract.

The 24-year-old put pen-to-paper on a new five-and-a-half year deal on Thursday evening, tying him to the south coast outfit until 2018.

It is more good news for the Saints following new deals for Kelvin Davies, Rickie Lambert, Morgan Schneiderlin and Jason Puncheon in recent weeks.

With the club quickly adapting to life under new boss Mauricio Pochettino and all but assured of Premier League safety, things are looking up for a side that was in League One just two years ago.

Lallana, who joined the Saints as a schoolboy, is excited about the future and can see himself staying at the club for the rest of his playing days.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” he told the club’s official website. “To commit my future to the club for the next five years is something I’m really happy about.

“I can’t wait to work with the new management team and the lads to continue our progress in the Premier League. It was an easy decision for me with the direction the club is going in.

“I’ve been at the club since I was 12 and – being honest – I can only see my future lying with Southampton Football Club.

Everton: Jonjoe Kenny let Frank Lampard down

Everton moved to within one point of the relegation zone on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Manchester City in the Premier League.

The Toffees are now one point ahead of Burnley in the table after the Clarets picked up a point against Crystal Palace, along with Frank Lampard’s side’s loss to the champions.

Phil Foden scored the only goal of the game as Michael Keane’s misstep allowed him to sneak in and tuck the ball into the bottom corner after sturdy Everton defending for the majority of the game leading up to that moment.

The Blues thought they were going to be given the perfect opportunity to level the scores when Rodri appeared to bring the ball down with his hand inside the box, but were left fuming as VAR decided that it was not worth having referee Paul Tierney take a look at the monitor.

Forget VAR

Whilst Lampard may be frustrated by VAR’s decision, he will also be disappointed with a few individual performances as some were unable to impress as much as others.

One player who let the manager down on Saturday was full-back Jonjoe Kenny as he failed to grasp his opportunity to show what he can do in the side.

Celtic pundit Mark Wilson previously dubbed him as “scared” during his loan spell with the Hoops last term and that is how he looked at times throughout this clash with Pep Guardiola’s outfit.

The full-back had the unenvied task of dealing with Phil Foden out on the flank for the majority of the game and he struggled badly on and off the ball.

In possession, he did very little. As per SofaScore, the dud completed 71% of his passes and failed with both of his attempted crosses. He was unable to show off any quality on the ball to hurt Manchester City on the counter-attack, with some of his passes leaving a lot to be desired – almost setting the away side away on the break with a poor pass in the first half.

Defensively, he was run ragged too. Via SofaScore, he lost 80% (4/5) of his duels throughout the 90 minutes and only completed one tackle, whilst making zero interceptions or blocks. He was also dribbled past twice and this shows that the opposition were able to get the better of him more times than he managed to with them.

Therefore, he let Lampard down badly, as much as VAR potentially did, as he failed to rise to the occasion. He was a liability at both ends of the pitch and appeared overawed by the size of the task at hand.

Liverpool dealt Thiago blow

Sharing the latest team news, Liverpool have now confirmed the latest ahead of tonight’s FA Cup clash with Norwich City in what is a blow for Jurgen Klopp.

The Lowdown: Injuries piling?

In recent weeks, Klopp has had to do without star names Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino with both men picking up problems after Liverpool’s 2-0 win away to Inter Milan in the Champions League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-latest-developments/” title=”Liverpool latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As the Reds clinch their ninth Carabao Cup, midfield star Thiago Alcantara was forced to miss the blockbuster encounter after picking up a hamstring injury in the pre-Chelsea warm up.

The Latest: Reds drop update…

In an update, it appears Klopp will ‘definitely’ be without the Spaniard tonight.

Indeed, as relayed by Liverpool’s official site, the Reds are certain to miss Thiago at Anfield but Klopp insists there will also be changes made anyway.

“We will play a side we have faced already and had some problems. We have to make changes because we played 120 minutes, so we will see who will do that better,” he explained.

The Verdict: Big blow…

The 30-year-old has been brilliant alongside Fabinho in midfield when available, with Liverpool still yet to lose a single game when they’re paired together in the starting XI.

Ahead of the Reds’ crunch FA Cup clash, news of his absence will be unwelcome going by his quality and it remains to be seen who can fill the void left by his presence.

Pundit Danny Mills, speaking to Football Insider, has described the ex-Bayern Munich star as now a ‘huge part of Liverpool’ and it’s safe to say he will be missed against the Canaries.

Where is Rangers flop Umar Sadiq now?

Rangers had recruited well enough over the last few years to bring a decade of hurt to a climax at Ibrox with the Glaswegian giants finally ending their trophy drought last term.

The good times were brought back and the challenge now is for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to replicate that with his current Gers side.

In Aaron Ramsey, they have a simply world-class player and who once fit, could ultimately prove to be the difference between winning the Premiership title or not.

Truth be told, Rangers have plenty of difference makers in their squad, namely the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, but did they lose an influential name far too early? Quite possibly.

Hindsight, of course, is a wonderful thing but if Steven Gerrard did get anything wrong in Scotland, it was arguably his handling of a certain Umar Sadiq.

Simply hearing the Nigerian’s name will do enough to send shivers through even the most staunch of Rangers fans, but after leaving the club for absolutely nothing at the conclusion of his loan spell, they will surely regret not trying to do more to bring him back to Ibrox.

After all, this is a player now linked with Europe’s elite after shining like a diamond in Spain.

The Nigerian has gone from a player who Gerrard had a significant falling out with, to a centre-forward who is proving everybody in Scottish football wrong.

His stint with the Gers was far from profitable, failing to find the net during any of his four appearances.

Sadiq’s mentality was questioned and quite rightly so. He was once fined £20k for liking an Instagram post, was not allowed to use the first-team dressing room, and was even banned from even parking his car inside the training ground.

For all parties, a parting of ways seemed mutually beneficial but had they taken a risk and kept him around, he may now be lighting up the Premiership.

Described as “electric” by FOX reporter James Dodd, the Nigeria international has set LaLiga 2 alight with Almeria, scoring 36 goals and registering 16 assists in just 70 games after joining them from Partizan Belgrade.

What has followed is much acclaim. The 25-year-old received a call-up to Nigeria’s AFCON squad and he has now been linked with moves to the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Barcelona and the mega-rich Newcastle United.

However, if he does move, his release clause of a mighty €60m (£50m) may have to be paid. That’s a far cry from the mere £1.6m he was rated at back in 2018 with Rangers.

His spell under Gerrard was a torturous one but he has come out of the side looking like a “top player” in the words of Andy Halliday. If only Rangers could have nurtured his impressive eye for goal.

James Pearce makes Salah contract claim

Mohamed Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool remains a complex issue where there is still plenty to be agreed upon, according to James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Salah’s contract concerns

The 29-year-old has undoubtedly been the Reds’ star man this season, bagging his 20th Premier League goal of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Brighton.

Salah’s future remains worryingly in doubt, though, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2023 and rumours suggesting that talks have collapsed over a new contract.

The hope is that the issue is resolved in the near future in order to not affect Liverpool’s season, but it is certainly a concerning situation for the time being.

The Latest: Pearce urges caution over new deal for Salah

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic on Saturday, Pearce said that Liverpool couldn’t simply offer Salah whatever he wants, with an effective wage structure in place at the club.

He wrote: “I keep hearing ‘just pay him what he wants’ but you can’t run a business like that. Yes, if you want to keep one of the best players in the world you have to pay him accordingly but you can’t just cave in to whatever his agent is demanding.”

On the Egyptian’s situation, Pearce added: “Nothing has changed. Still a stand-off over what the club are prepared to offer and what Salah wants. Still time for a compromise to be reached. I think the time to worry is if it’s still unresolved come May.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-23/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Hugely complex situation

This is a situation which could divide the Liverpool fan base, even though it seems likely that almost every Reds supporter would be desperate for Salah to extend his stay.

On the one hand, the 29-year-old is currently one of the world’s best players and should be paid as such, especially with many years hopefully left in him at the top level.

However, as Pearce has hinted, suddenly paying one player vastly more than anyone else could cause an issue with squad harmony, and breaking the bank for an individual who turns 30 this year does carry an element of risk.

Losing Salah would undoubtedly be a huge blow for Liverpool, but if that were to happen, no player is bigger than the club and the Reds would move on without their Egyptian superstar.

In other news, Liverpool are reportedly favourites to sign one player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Leeds: Orta plotting Downes swoop

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Flynn Downes to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent report by The Times, who claim that, with Aston Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham United all believed to be plotting a £60m move for Kalvin Phillips, should the England international go on to leave Jesse Marsch’s side at the end of the current campaign, Victor Orta could look to bring in the Swansea City midfielder as the 26-year-old’s replacement.

Phillips 2.0

Considering just how impressive Downes has been for Swansea since his £1m move to the Liberty Stadium last summer, in addition to his remarkably similar profile to Phillips, it is easy to see why Leeds have identified the 23-year-old as a potential successor to the England star.

Indeed, over his 31 Championship appearances this season, the £1.08m-rated midfielder has been one of Russell Martin’s standout performers, scoring one goal, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 61.8 passes, 0.9 interceptions, 1.2 tackles and winning four duels per 90 minutes.

These returns have seen the £9.3k-per-week dynamo average a SofaScore match rating of 6.82, ranking him as the Swans’ tenth-best player in the second tier of English football.

Furthermore, Martin has clearly been extremely impressed with the development of Downes, stating of the former England U20 international after a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town back in September last year:

“Flynn was incredible, it’s difficult to single people out, but he does the dirty work perfectly well. He enables other people to do their roles brilliantly, he knows exactly what his role in the team is. Kyle Naughton and the guys at the back appreciate him a lot, I know I would have if I had him playing in front of me.

“He has an excellent willingness to learn, his attitude, his attention to detail and how quickly he learns is outstanding. He’s playing in a completely different role to what he used to play at his previous club, as most of the guys are. His desire to win and athleticism, with his increasing and improving technical ability, shows how much he wants to work.”

As such, with a great deal of the traits Martin attributes to Downes also being easily applicable to Phillips, should the 26-year-old indeed move on to pastures new this summer, it would appear as if Orta could very well unearth Leeds’ next midfield maestro in a move for the Swansea City star.

Spurs: Hojbjerg attracting summer interest

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is attracting increasing interest ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claimed that Jose Mourinho is desperate to bring the 26-year-old to AS Roma this summer. The former Tottenham manager is said to be more than willing to work with the Denmark international once again at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, the report added that, because of Antonio Conte’s fondness for the midfielder, Spurs would demand a figure in the region of €40m (£33.5m) in order to part with the former Southampton colossus at the end of the current campaign.

Paratici must avoid Hojbjerg disaster

Considering just how important a part of Conte’s side Hojbjerg has become since the Italian’s arrival in north London last November, it is an easy argument to make that Fabio Paratici sanctioning the £33.5m sale of the 26-year-old this summer would be something of a disaster by Tottenham’s sporting director.

Indeed, in the 19 Premier League fixtures that the 52-year-old has overseen at Spurs, Hojbjerg has featured in all but two, He was unavailable for the 2-2 draw with Liverpool in December and left on the bench in the 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in February.

Furthermore, over his 27 league outings in total this term, the £58.5m-rated destroyer has been one of Tottenham’s standout performers. He has scored two goals, registered two assists and created three big chances for his team-mates, averaging 1.3 interceptions and 2.3 tackles and winning 5.2 duels per game.

These returns have seen the £100k-per-week “monster” – in the words of Morten Bisgaard – average an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as Conte’s fourth-best player in the English top flight in 2021/22.

As such, it is clear to see that selling a player whose “simplicity is genius” according to Mourinho, particularly for an amount roughly £25m less than his current valuation, would be a catastrophic call for Paratici to make this summer, not to mention one which would surely leave Conte furious.

Everton: Woodgate rips into Richarlison

Richarlison was ‘hugely disrespectful’ to the travelling Everton supporters following Sunday’s defeat against West Ham United.

That’s according to BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Jonathan Woodgate, speaking live on air.

The lowdown

Everton lost 2-1 at the London Stadium to deepen their relegation fears ahead of Wednesday’s crunch encounter with Burnley.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-3/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Aaron Cresswell and Jarrod Bowen scored either side of a deflected Mason Holgate effort to give the Hammers victory against Frank Lampard’s side, who were reduced to 10 men with 25 minutes left when Michael Keane picked up a second yellow card.

Richarlison started on the left of Frank Lampard’s front three, joining Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Demarai Gray in the attack, and completed the full 90 minutes.

However, Woodgate spotted the Brazilian walking straight down the tunnel following the full-time whistle rather than going over to acknowledge the travelling fans.

The latest

Woodgate said that Richarlison really ought to ‘go and clap’ the fans after the game, many of whom would have made a 200+ mile journey from Merseyside.

He accused the 24-year-old of immaturity, claiming that he was effectively throwing his ‘toys out the pram’.

The verdict

Perhaps Richarlison’s frustration got the better of him. He had chances to score what could have been a crucial goal, but two of shots were off target, and the other three were blocked.

Journalist James Nalton wrote that the 24-year-old ‘should have done better’ with the opportunities he was given, picking out instances where he could have teed up Vitaliy Mykolenko or finished a chance created for him by Alex Iwobi.

It has been a difficult season for the £90,000-per-week forward in general, as reflected by his tally of just four goals. For comparison, in each of his first two years at Everton, he struck 13 times in the Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

If some Toffees supporters are upset with Richarlison, then maybe he will be able to redeem himself by tucking a chance away at Turf Moor in midweek.

Leeds flop is becoming a bigger waste of money than Rodrigo & Sinisterra

Daniel Farke continues to fight back against previous Premier League critics in the Leeds United hot seat.

Indeed, question marks have always been there regarding the German’s suitability to the daunting top-flight, with only ten career wins in the tense division next to his name making him stand out as a manager more used to EFL success.

Yet, having recently masterminded a win and a draw over Chelsea and Liverpool, and a hard-fought point against Brentford was secured last time out, the under-fire boss has certainly won himself more time in the Elland Road dug-out.

Still, even he won’t be happy with one big underperformer in his ranks. He’s up there with high-profile flops Rodrigo and Luis Sinisterra before him.

Why Rodrigo & Sinisterra were a waste of money at Leeds

Looking at the table above, Leeds would feel they have a compelling argument to state that a large portion of their most expensive recruits have been hits, rather than misses.

For example, both Georginio Rutter and Dan James stood out as firm fan favourites when Leeds routinely competed in the Championship, with a stunning 77 goal contributions collected between the entertaining attacking duo at Elland Road.

The jury is still out on Brenden Aaronson’s £28.5m price tag, but he does have a promotion next to his name, with the 25-year-old also up to three goal contributions for the season, showing off glimpses of his quality.

Both Rodrigo and Sinisterra are likely to be dismissed as flops, though, when remembering their spells, with the combined £47m spent on their services arguably wasted.

For their big fees, a lot more would have been anticipated, with the Spain international a hit-and-miss presence throughout his 97-game spell, considering he mustered up just 13 goals across his first two Premier League seasons. He would also boast a steep £100k-per-week wage.

Sinisterra’s stint would also go by in an underwhelming blur, with only 28 games falling into his lap in West Yorkshire. His five goals in Premier League action during his solitary season up North also couldn’t save his employers from the drop, with the bumper deal leaving a bad taste in the mouth.

Leeds United forwardLuis Sinisterra.

Still, with 36 goals tallied up collectively, there are some rays of positivity to hang onto from their forgettable playing days, unlike this man..

Leeds have a bigger waste of money than Rodrigo and Sinisterra

On another occasion, Leeds could well have run out as winners at the G-Tech Community Stadium.

Farke’s visitors mustered up 15 shots next to the hosts’ eight, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin thankfully bailed the Premier League newcomers out again.

While the former Everton striker continues to impress after moving on a free transfer, the same cannot be said for Lucas Perri, who looked shaky once more in between the sticks for the away side, after a major £13.9m move from Lyon in the summer.

Worryingly, only eight of Perri’s 30 passes reached their intended target against Brentford, with the “dreadful” ‘keeper – as content creator Lewis Deighton lambasted his distribution post-match – also only completing one save all match, leading to Jordan Henderson powering home his first ever Bees strike past the ropey stopper.

For £13.9m, considering last season saw Leeds curse Illan Meslier’s error-prone performances in goal, the newly promoted side would have expected Perri to be a far more solid performer than he currently has shown, with his last clean sheet for the club coming all the way back in August.

With a £50k-per-week wage also thrown into the mix, which makes him a higher earner than both Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu, who take home a lesser £40k-per-week pay packet each, it isn’t ludicrous to suggest from his early days in West Yorkshire so far that Perri is going down the route of being a bigger waste of money than both Rodrigo and Sinisterra, as more errors in between the sticks could prove to be Leeds’ undoing in the relegation fight.

After all, former Leeds player Jon Newsome has even come out already to criticise the signing as “wasted funds” on the end of the 49ers, with Perri likely to go down as a miss, as opposed to a hit, in the transfer department, if he can’t turn around his dismal narrative soon.
