McLeish backs Villa to sign Winks

Former Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has told the club what to do this summer, regarding a move for Tottenham’s Harry Winks.

What’s the talk?

Former Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has claimed that Tottenham’s Harry Winks could be a good addition to Dean Smith’s squad this summer. Football Insider have claimed that Winks is available and Spurs would be willing to sell him for £30m, with McLeish backing Newcastle and Villa to look at him.

He said: “Newcastle United, would they not fancy him?

“Aston Villa too. I don’t know if Aston Villa have got enough midfielders. He’s certainly bright enough to play for some of these teams.”

In 2019, former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino hailed the “amazing” midfielder for his improvement in front of goal in the first team. He told Tottenham’s official website:

“He deserves the praise because the whole action is amazing.

“He recovered the ball like a full-back, we started to build from the back and then he arrived for the cross from GK, which was fantastic – we have to praise him too.

“It’s amazing, amazing, because we were talking in the last few weeks that he had to score and to have more presence in the opposition’s box because he has the quality to do it. I’m so happy.”

Smith needs him

NSWE could strike gold for Aston Villa with a swoop for Winks this summer. Villa lack depth in the central midfield department and Dean Smith needs a player like Winks to come in and fill that hole in the squad.

John McGinn and Douglas Luiz were Smith’s preferred partnership in midfield, with the pair starting 37 and 32 Premier League games respectively. Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson were Smith’s only other options for those roles and neither of them started ten or more Premier League matches.

This suggests that Winks could come in and apply much-needed pressure on McGinn and Luiz. The Tottenham man could arrive and compete for a place in the starting XI instead of coming in to make up the numbers, as Nakamba and Sanson seemingly did in the 2020/21 campaign with their lack of involvement in the league.

Winks would then help McGinn and Luiz improve by pushing them to work harder to keep their place in the side, creating healthy competition in central midfield within Smith’s squad.

The £30m midfielder is a proven player at Premier League level. He has played over 100 games for Tottenham in the league, with over 150 games in all competitions for the London-based club, and has been capped ten times by England at international level.

He is also at a great age to develop, at 25, and Smith could help coach him into becoming a key player for the club – utilising his experience and potential to turn him into Villa’s midfield metronome for years to come. This is why NSWE could strike gold for Villa with the Englishman this summer.

AND in other news, NSWE could land Aston Villa’s next Paul Merson in “extraordinary” £20k-p/w dynamo…

Pakistan disintegrating due to lack of discipline

Article: Taha Noor, comment on Pak cricket, PCB

Taha Noor15-Sep-2002Pakistani cricket fans were left tearing their hair out in frustration after the first two matches in Kenya. Yet again, a team that promises much, fails to deliver, crumbling under the pressure exerted by the thoroughly professional Australians was the universal lament here. It was thought that Pakistan would put up a good show, having recently beaten the Aussies in the Super Challenge II competition. To say that the performance in the first two matches at Kenya was far below par, would probably be an understatement.Even though the Pakistanis may have emerged victors against the Kenyans, their standard of play was certainly not worth praise. The bowlers sprayed the ball all over with a massive number of wides and no-balls, and the batsmen limped to victory inspite being asked to chase modest totals against a very weak opposition. While the Kenyans were not good enough to take advantage, the Australians cashed in. What this points towards is an obvious lack of discipline and a major lack of planning.Firstly, the main problem plaguing the team in this triangular tournament was the absence of their top batsmen. Youhana was sent home after a squabble with the tour management and Inzamam’s injury compounded the problems for an already fragile batting order.Even more mystifying was that Misbah-ul-Haq not getting a chance even when the big guns were absent. Misbah has been touring along with the team for over 6 months but has played only one game. The lack of confidence in his abilities is obvious as the management preferred to play Shoaib Malik as a batsman. Misbah has been included in the squad as a specialist batsman, and if he cannot justify that position, then other alternatives must be sought. It is essential that any squad of 15 should contain those players who can be slotted into the playing eleven whenever needed, not just mere tourists. The selectors would do well to reconsider the likes of Taufeeq Umar and Imran Farhat who performed well in the domestic competitions. The next problem that must be addressed is the indiscipline of our bowling attack. Waqar and Wasim are highly experienced campaigners, and for them to be bowling such a large number of wides and no-balls is inexcusable. They were wayward in both line and length and the Australians punished them thoroughly. Shoaib Akhtar looked totally out of sorts after his return to the team, and seemed to be all over the place with his bowling. In the Super Challenge II he had bowled with great aggression and control, which was no where to be seen in Kenya. There is some way to go in this tournament, and the Pakistani attack must try and get their act together, especially cut down on the extras. The over rate is another problem for Pakistan, with the fielders and bowlers showing no interest in rushing things during the change of overs. The team has been very lucky in not being penalised for their atrocious over rate.Lastly, the Pakistanis in general need to work out a plan against the Aussies, who have come back brilliantly after their loss in the Super Challenge II. They are a very difficult side to beat, when they are on top, and a lot of hard work has to be put in if the Pakistanis are to ruffle their feathers. They need to work out what to do after winning the toss, as chasing is certainly not one of Pakistan’s strengths, even if that means exposing the batsmen to the overcast conditions at the start of play. The batting order needs to be thought about in detail, as asking Razzak to open was not a very clever idea. Afridi should be utilized a little lower down the order in such conditions, once the ball has lost its shine, so that he can be more effective. Plus the Pakistani side is playing with too many all rounders and hardly any specialist batsmen. Misbah must be given a chance to prove himself, and if he fails to do so, then its fair to axe him.

Aston Villa: Fans react to John Percy claim

Aston Villa have been extremely busy in the transfer market already, and Dean Smith now wants to add to his coaching ranks.

According to The Telegraph’s John Percy, Smith is looking to strengthen his backroom team this summer with a specialist set-piece coach.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to Percy’s claim on social media.

Villa are aiming to sign set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse from Southampton prior to the start of pre-season, so should a move materialise for the Saints midfielder, he could end up benefiting from a set-piece coach.

Smith’s side scored 20% of their goals last season from set-pieces, but it seems as if he wants to improve on that going forward and perhaps defending them as well.

It’s not the first time the Villa manager has looked at a set-piece coach during his tenure at Villa Park. Back in 2018, Smith was considering one after seeing the benefits at former side Brentford.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared the news on Smith’s backroom staff plans on Twitter on Tuesday evening. This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with many sharing their positive thoughts.

Pundit says Denzel Dumfries would be top signing for Everton

Marcus Bent believes that signing Holland’s Euro 2020 star Denzel Dumfries would leave the Goodison Park faithful elated.

The 25-year-old right-back has been a regular for both his country and PSV for the last three years but has only recently caught the eye following his form at the European Championships.

Prior to the Netherlands’ last 16 exit, Dumfries had been one of the standout players of the tournament having scored in their opening two group games, and was also named man-of-the-match in each.

And his performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with Everton joining a long list of sides that are keen on signing him from PSV.

PSV manager Roger Schmidt has already resigned to losing his flying full-back after saying that Dumfries, who has a £15m release clause, is “likely to leave” the Dutch giants this summer.

Some of Europe’s top sides, including Bayern Munich and Inter Milan and are also keen on capturing him this summer, but Bent would love him to end up at Goodison Park.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Speaking to Everton, they said he’s a terrific player, but clubs don’t sell their players when the Euros are on because they can put x number of pounds onto their player. Terrific, quick, pacey, he’s a rocket.

“If the club could get him on the back of what he’s done or whether they could attract him to Goodison is a different point entirely, but if you could get him, the fans would be elated.”

Lehmann plays 100th first class game, surpasses 11,000 runs

The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) has congratulated Darren Lehmann who today plays his 100th first class game for South Australia.

Southampton miss out on Junior Firpo

Southampton are set to miss out on transfer target Junior Firpo, with The Athletic reporting that he has arrived in England for a medical with Leeds United, which will surely be a cause of frustration for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

According to the Athletic writer Adam Crafton, Leeds will pay £12.8m to sign the 24-year-old from Barcelona this summer, with his move set to be confirmed this week.

Southampton have been heavily linked with the former Real Betis man in recent months and although they have confirmed the signing of fellow left-back Romain Perraud, it seems clear that the Saints need more competition and depth in that position ahead of next season.

After Ryan Bertrand’s departure earlier in the summer, it would be unfair to expect Perraud to be Southampton’s only natural left-back in his debut season at the club, especially with youngster Jake Vokins joining Ross County on loan for the season.

Therefore, it comes as a big blow that another of Southampton’s potential full-back options for this summer is no longer on the market, as it would have been good for Hasenhuttl to have two quality young left-backs competing for a starting spot in his side next season.

Whilst Firpo’s time at Barcelona didn’t really go to plan, as he made just 41 appearances in two seasons at the club, he was competing with a world-class left-back in Jordi Alba, and still has plenty of time to realise the potential he showed at Real Betis.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

His former manager at both Betis and Barcelona Quique Setien was full of praise for him when he joined the Catalan side, saying:

“Barca have made a good deal. It’s a boy with enormous potential, youth, desire, excitement and quality. He’s worth the gamble.

“He will make progress at Barca because he has the desire and potential for growth. He has things to improve, of course.

“Barca have made an excellent deal. He has some qualities to polish, and good things that will come in handy.”

Therefore, it seems as if Southampton are missing out on a potential gem in Firpo, and they will have to look elsewhere for another left-back this summer, as they do not want to find themselves in a situation where the only left-back at the club is new signing Perraud as it would be massively unfair on him to be expected to come into a new league and play every game at a high level for an entire campaign.

Hasenhuttl should be gutted that Firpo is moving to Leeds and not to St Mary’s.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl should axe £60k-p/w Saints beast with “great potential” amid European interest

England face uphill battle in Perth

After Australia had established a first innings lead of 271 on the second day of the third Test in Perth, England had to face a daunting examination of technique and temperament against the extreme pace of Brett Lee and the probing accuracy of Glenn

Ralph Dellor30-Nov-2002After Australia had established a first innings lead of 271 on the second day of the third Test in Perth, England had to face a daunting examination of technique and temperament against the extreme pace of Brett Lee and the probing accuracy of Glenn McGrath. They lost Marcus Trescothick to a Lee rocket, but Michael Vaughan and nightwatchman Richard Dawson held out to close on 33 for one – still 238 runs short of making Australia bat again. The day did not start well for England with the news that Chris Silverwood had damaged ankle ligaments and had been ruled out of bowling for the remainder of the Test. That put an extra workload on the remaining bowlers, but off-spinner Dawson was only required to bowl five overs. There was no lack of effort from the England bowlers, but little inspiration as the Australian batsmen relished the conditions and the situation. There were runs and partnerships all down the order as they moved to a total of 456 based on a succession of individual contributions rather than one or two dominant innings.Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn extended their overnight partnership to 74 – the highest of the innings – by adding 33 runs in the first 11 overs of the morning. Ponting had gone to his fifty and reached 68 when Nasser Hussain replaced the pacy Steve Harmison with Craig White. Ponting will rue the lack of foot movement as he edged the ball from just outside off stump into his wicket.Darren Lehmann has yet to establish himself in the Australian side, but he got his opportunity to bat at number five when Steve Waugh was unwell with a stomach upset. He played with more assurance than previously in the series and was audibly upset with himself when he took on White on the stroke of lunch when he had 42. He hooked uppishly and cried "Oh no" as the ball sailed to Harmison at long leg.Martyn had been a study of concentration, taking 120 balls to reach his fifty, but he was having the effect of wearing down the depleted England bowling resources. He moved forward to become the top scorer in the innings with 71 when he played a somewhat loose shot outside the off stump to edge Alex Tudor to the wicket-keeper.As one Western Australian left the crease, another, Adam Gilchrist, arrived to an expectant welcome from the WACA crowd. It was the captain Steve Waugh who moved serenely to his fifty and Gilchrist, with characteristic gusto, who blazed his way to 38 from 28 balls with seven fours and a six. Gilchrist’s blood was running and England would have been delighted to get him when they did as he hooked White to long leg where Tudor did well to keep just inside the boundary rope as he held the catch. The new ball was taken to account for Waugh who fell to Tudor, just as he did on the bowler’s debut four years ago on this ground. The Australian captain played across a full length delivery and was bowled. However, the departure of the last of the recognised batsmen did not signal the end of England’s torment. The last three wickets added 108 runs in 18 overs.Shane Warne was enjoying himself immensely in partnership with Lee who was getting a bit of a working over from the English pace bowlers. Lee was not unduly perturbed as he unfurled some rasping shots that took the score along at a steady rate. The partnership of 68 was only ended when Warne took on Harmison’s arm at long off when going for a greedy third and he was run out for 35. Lee slashed White to Robert Key at third man for an enterprising 41, before a clubbing innings from Jason Gillespie came to an end when he was yorked to give White his third five-wicket haul in a Test innings.England could do with White adding to his one Test hundred in their second innings. Left with a tricky 11 over session to face before stumps, opening batsmen Trescothick and Vaughan had to be at their most trenchant as Waugh gave the new ball to Lee. With the wind at his back, Lee bowled at a furious pace.Unusually for him, Trescothick was hopping around as he had to in order to avoid Lee’s thunderbolts, while at the other end McGrath was plugging away with scarcely a hint of a loose ball. It was in the seventh over of the innings that Lee delivered a hammer-blow to England’s hopes by going wide of the crease and forcing Trescothick to fend off the ball lifting rapidly into his body. It took the batsman’s glove before lodging in the glove of the leaping Gilchrist and Trescothick – reluctantly – was forced to go.Dawson played with great courage and no little skill to keep his Yorkshire colleague Vaughan company to the close. Waugh introduced Gillespie for the last over of the day and with the last ball very nearly claimed another wicket. Dawson had an agonising wait after the ball had flown off his pad to short leg before umpire Steve Bucknor turned down the various appeals and called time. A broad smile burst upon the batsman’s face as he realised he had survived to face another day. It is sure to be a testing one for him and all his colleagues.

Rangers: Fans slam Cedric Itten v Tranmere

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were far from happy with the performance of Cedric Itten during their 1-0 friendly defeat to Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

The Gers’ pre-season is now well underway as they prepare for the new campaign. They started off with a 1-0 victory over Partick Thistle but they fell to a single goal from Kieron Morris on Merseyside. Steven Gerrard will not be happy with what he saw from his players and will be demanding swift improvements.

One of the players who perhaps struggled the most was £3.15m-valued Itten (Transfermarkt). He played up front for the Gers but missed some good chances and failed to stake a claim for a spot in the starting XI for when the competitive action rolls around. The 24-year-old did not have the best 2020/21 season at Rangers, scoring just six times in 38 matches (Transfermarkt) – he must improve on that if he is to become a key player under Gerrard.

Some Gers supporters were not best pleased with the Switzerland international and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Itten

“Morelos probs getting sold, Roofe is 1, Itten is worse than dreadful, Defoe will be more a coach & Sakala we’re yet to see if he’s decent so yeah I’d say we urgently need a top goal scorer”

“Don’t think big Itten will cut it at us. Was buzzing when we signed him cos he was banging them in for St Gallen but I just can’t see him doing the business, hope I’m proved wrong.”

“Would sell Itten, he ain’t good enough.”

“Said same after game pal, we ain’t winning anything with Itten leading line. If Alfie does go we need to go big to replace him”

Waugh to prove a point, England to shake disappointments

England has a chance to resurrect its tour and Steve Waugh will be out to prove a point when he leads New South Wales against the tourists at Sydney on Friday

By Michael Donaldson03-Dec-2002England has a chance to resurrect its tour and Steve Waugh will be out to prove a point when he leads New South Wales against the tourists at Sydney on Friday.England’s one-day squad starts its World Cup campaign against an international-strength NSW side, Australia’s reigning one-day champion and a team which Blues opener Mark Waugh said “wouldn’t be out of place in the World Cup”.The battered English will get an immediate taste of what’s in store for the next three weeks when one-day series against Australia and Sri Lanka takes over from Tests. They’ll face a side skippered by their Ashes nemesis Waugh and containing Australian one-day regulars Michael Bevan, Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee.Mark Waugh, Simon Katich, Stuart MacGill, rising star Michael Clarke, former Australian one-day pace bowler Nathan Bracken, World Cup squad member Brad Haddin and Corey Richards make up a daunting line-up.Steve Waugh was omitted from the 30-man World Cup shadow squad named on Monday but hasn’t given up on appearing in South Africa next year.Friday’s chance is a rare chance to show he still belongs in Australian colours.”I was very disappointed not to be considered in the top 30 players,” Waugh said today.”I was disappointed and hurt by it and I want to try to prove them (national selectors) wrong.”Waugh, as fit as he’s ever been and sharp in the field despite his 37-years, has been sharpening his bowling as well in order to prove himself in the limited overs arena. As captain of NSW he will be able to inject himself into the bowling attack.”I’ve just got to get runs and, if I bowl, take wickets and make an impression,” Waugh said. While Bevan doesn’t think he has much to prove he would be mindful his recent run of form for Australia hasn’t been as good as the 32-year-old is used to.Since making 102 not out against New Zealand at Melbourne last summer, he’s made only 173 runs in 11 innings at an average of 21.63 – well down on his career average of 54.78.But for NSW he has been in impeccable form.”I can’t do anything more, I’m hitting the ball really well at the moment,” he said.Bevan said England had an opportunity to turn things around after losing the Ashes series in three quick Tests.”I guess the one-dayers from their point of view is a chance to turn the corner.”The match is also a chance for NSW World Cup hopefuls Bracken, Clarke and Haddin to push for inclusion in the final 15-man squad. All three were named in the 30-man shadow squad.New South Wales: Steve Waugh (captain), Corey Richards, Mark Waugh, Michael Bevan, Michael Clarke, Simon Katich, Brad Haddin, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath, Dominic Thornely (12th man).
