Legend or not? Liverpool fans can’t agree on Michael Owen’s status in the club’s history

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been busy discussing Michael Owen’s status in the club’s history, after the former Reds striker was allegedly booed by some at the Legends match vs AC Milan at Anfield on Saturday.

Owen rose through the youth ranks at Anfield before emerging as a world-class frontman during his time on Merseyside, winning numerous personal accolades and playing a starring role in the club’s 2-1 FA Cup final win over Arsenal – Owen grabbed both goals to help Liverpool secure the treble.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

However, the striker then left for Real Madrid, which is understandable given the undeniable pull of the Spanish giants.

Having said that, it was his decision to join Manchester United, Liverpool’s arch-rivals, later on in his career that angered the Reds fanbase, and for some, tarnished the good memories that Owen had created whilst at Anfield.

Some still hold the 39-year-old in high regard though, so let’s see what the split Liverpool supporters on Twitter have been saying about Owen…

Leeds interest in Benalouane suggests Bielsa considering change of formation

[ad_pod ]According to The Guardian sport’s deputy news editor Ed Aarons on Twitter, Leeds United are one of two clubs interested in signing Leicester City defender Yohan Benalouane and his arrival at Elland Road may suggest a big change is on the horizon.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the experienced Tunisian is currently enjoying a fruitful loan spell with the Whites’ Championship rivals Nottingham Forest, where he has formed a strong partnership with Alexander Milosevic at the heart of the defence.

According to Aarons the 31-year-old, whose contract at the King Power Stadium is due to expire next summer, is attracting interest from the Yorkshire outfit and Cardiff City ahead of the summer transfer window.

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa would certainly have some decisions to make if a deal did end up happening.

Change of formation?

You would think so.

Are Leeds set for another spectacular fall from grace? Ingood Nick believes so in the video below…

Given Liam Cooper is the captain and Pontus Jansson is such an influential figure for the Whites, it is difficult right now to see either being cast aside whichever division United find themselves in next season.

Benalouane is similar to the Swede in many ways in that he is a committed character who wears his heart on his sleeve, and there is little doubt that he is someone who would be a favourite among the Elland Road faithful because of his warrior-like displays.

However, even though he is approaching 32 years of age he surely won’t be happy to sign for Leeds if he is going to be on the substitutes’ bench, which could suggest Bielsa is considering a change of formation.

Four at the back has been the Argentine’s go-to this term, but given winger Ezgjan Alioski is currently featuring at left-back it would be no surprise if a formation incorporating three central defenders and wing-backs was on his mind moving forward.

Injury News: Klopp may have to call on Milner after Alexander-Arnold injury update

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp provided a mixed injury update via the club’s official website on Tuesday, with Xherdan Shaqiri set to be in contention for the clash against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend but Trent Alexander-Arnold a doubt.

What’s the word, then?

Well, both players missed out on featuring for their countries during the international break, with Shaqiri remaining at Melwood to undergo treatment on an ongoing groin issue, while Alexander-Arnold has hurt his back.

While Klopp said the Swiss attacker “should be fine for the weekend”, he was far more pessimistic on the England international’s chances of making the game against Mauricio Pochettino’s men on Sunday.

The German told liverpoolfc.com: “Trent still feels his back. We are not 100 per cent sure, so we have to watch him. Trent wants to [be] 100 per cent, but we have to see.

“It is a strange one, it’s not an obvious injury that you can say something is broke or whatever, it’s just a bit annoying actually that he cannot feel really free.”

Time for James Milner?

It could well be.

While Klopp isn’t willing to completely rule out the talented right-back featuring against Spurs, it appears it will be difficult for him to be involved from his latest comments.

That will leave the former Borussia Dortmund boss with a conundrum at right-back, although he will likely call upon the dependable Milner to fill the role.

It is something that the 5 ft 9 star has done on plenty of occasions this season, including against Manchester United at Old Trafford last month, and the reliable utility player is guaranteed to produce a committed and composed display for the title hopefuls.

Are the jaws of Manchester City about to bite Benjamin Mendy?

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City are a side famed for their immense strength in depth and financial power, but Pep Guardiola has been without a full-fit, natural left-back for almost the entirety of two seasons.

The 2017 summer transfer window was a watershed moment for the club. After finishing in 4th place in the league which, according to a multitude of keyboard warrior experts, confirmed Fraudiola was indeed a chequebook manager after all, City went into the transfer market with a coherent plan: to sign quality at full-back.

Out went Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and club legend Pablo Zabaleta; in came Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy.

The latter was one of the stars of Monaco’s route to the 2016/17 Champions League semi-final, which included a last-16 victory over City, alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho and Thomas Lemar.

And the scene was set for Mendy to blossom into a perfect long-term option at left-back following an incredibly bright opening to his time in Manchester. A cruciate ligament rupture, however, has sent his development on a downward spiral which has sent his reputation tumbling with it.

The notorious social media sensation has had his moments in the limelight. City fans have embraced his exuberance and playful attitude and, to a certain degree, his uncensored media antics have been a breath of fresh air within a footballing world which strangles the vast majority of players from expressing true personality in the public eye.

But a distinct shift in opinion is taking place as frustration begins to build regarding Mendy’s lack of professionalism. Back in September 2018, the France international was disciplined after arriving late for treatment the day after he attended Anthony Joshua’s world championship victory over Alexander Povetkin in London.

Forgiveness was offered as he started five Premier League games shortly after his late-show, including high-magnitude fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester United, but another injury setback and yet another moment of off-field controversy has induced a fresh set of questions regarding his long-term future.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Mendy was spotted at a nightclub in the early hours on Saturday morning last weekend, just a few hours before he was due to attend a training session – a damning revelation which doesn’t bode well for his future.

And this is what Guardiola had to say about the situation: “I would prefer him to go home earlier but I don’t control the players in that situation. They are old enough to know what they have to do. I’m not his father.”

The man who talks so much about sharks may be swimming into the gaping jaws of a great white this summer after his latest display of disrespect towards club and manager.

Guardiola was ruthless in his decision to offload Clichy, Sagna, Zabelta, Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri, Nolito, Kelechi Iheanacho, Fernando and Aleksander Kolarov all in the same summer, so there is no reason why Mendy should be acting so utterly impervious.

Let’s not forget that, on the rare occasions the 24-year-old has been fit enough for selection, he regularly rattles the ball into the penalty area with as much ferocity as his legs can physically provide, as if he is a retired banker playing squash. This is football: the aim of the game isn’t to kick it really really hard, Benjamin, some finesse and intelligence is required to pick the lock.

With the latest display of disrespect lingering in Guardiola’s mind, there is almost no doubt that his attention will be turning towards the summer market. A replacement is needed; City cannot go another season without a reliable and exemplary professional to call upon.

The tangible effects of Kyle Walker’s impact in City’s first season were there for all to see, even if his second campaign has been comparably underwhelming. A player who contributes to the homegrown quota, has experience in the Premier League and possesses both the engine and technique to influence the game at both ends of the pitch, Walker has provided the blueprint for future acquisitions.

A desire to follow that blueprint will lead Guardiola in one clear direction: straight to the King Power Stadium to Ben Chilwell.

Chilwell is reportedly a leading target for the Citizens following his brilliant rise to prominence. The early stages of his career hinted that he would grow into a decent footballer at this level, but he is already exceeding expectations with the consistency of his performances for both Leicester and England.

The 6-cap international only turned 22 shortly before the turn of the year and that will naturally intensify interest from Guardiola and the rest of the decision makers at the Etihad Stadium.

Considering he could form solid understandings at international level with both Raheem Sterling and John Stones, his age, the fact he would contribute to the homegrown quota, and the quality he has already showcased in the Premier League, it’s fair to say it would be a stroke of genius if City can secure his signature.

Mendy may well have put the final nail in his coffin by underlining his lack of commitment to his career last weekend, thus forcing Guardiola’s hand with Chilwell’s development providing plenty of food for thought.

Unai Emery may become a victim of his own success at Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

Unai Emery may have painted himself into a corner.

The Arsenal manager was given the unenviable task in the summer of replacing the long-serving Arsene Wenger and it appeared something of an impossibility. The Gunners had not saved their money well, did not have the finances to break the bank, and signed players who were not linked with the likes of Europe’s elite.

Nevertheless, they are on course to qualify for the Champions League and could even finish above both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Emery has worked wonders. The signings of Lucas Torreira and Bernd Leno in the summer were risks – neither player was at all proven in the top-flight – but they appear to have paid off, while the acquisition of Matteo Guendouzi has proved to be a Wenger-esque masterstroke.

Denis Suarez, signed on loan in January, has not worked out quite as well but it has mattered little, with the club’s momentum rolling on. Their 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday evening was their sixth game unbeaten and their fifth win in those matches; they have beaten Huddersfield Town, Southampton, Bournemouth, Manchester United and the Magpies, while drawing with Spurs.

It is, obviously, good news, with the Gunners now well-placed to finish in the top three after leapfrogging Mauricio Pochettino’s out-of-sorts side.

But as the summer approaches and the need for reinforcements intensifies, one can’t help but feel that Emery might be doing too good of a job.

Stan Kroenke has never sanctioned the release of major funds, not to match the likes of the two Manchester clubs or Liverpool, anyway, and he may well look at the job that Emery is doing and only tighten the purse strings.

Many reports have speculated that Emery will be given a basic budget of around £40million. In today’s market, that simply isn’t enough to perform the surgery that is needed on the starting XI.

Arsenal require a new left-back to replace the ageing Nacho Monreal, a new centre-back to allow Emery to stop relying on Shkodran Mustafi, a replacement for Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey, a young, pacey winger and, potentially, successors for both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil.

Money will surely be available after sales but, even so, being armed with £40m and needing five players before sales will not fill fans with confidence.

The elegant management of Emery, however, will not change the mind of Kroenke. The former Paris Saint-Germain boss is working within the budgetary restraints that held back Wenger and is doing well; qualification for the Champions League would be a genuinely amazing achievement in a season where Spurs were once in the title race and United have been reborn under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The board should reward that with a war chest as Arsenal look to climb to the next level.

It is more likely, though, that Emery will be told to again work some miracles.

He has done it so far, but it remains to be seen how long remains on that particular clock.

Lee Bowyer heaps praise on Charlton defence but says they should score more goals

[ad_pod ]

Charlton host Luton Town at The Valley on Saturday with the aim of climbing closer to the automatic promotion spots and extending their unbeaten run to 11 games.

They face tough opposition in the form of the league leaders though, who are on a fantastic run themselves.

Mick Harford’s side score goals for fun and this game will be the classic case of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object; Luton rarely strike out and the Addicks have kept four clean sheets in their last four games, something Lee Bowyer has been particularly pleased with.

He said: “We always feel like we’re going to score goals, and we should score more sometimes. As a team, it starts from the front, your hard work to stop them passing the ball forward, and then when it does finally get to the goalie situation then you make saves, it’s everybody you know.

“But yeah, it’s hard work, the lads are working so hard at the moment and clean sheets are massive, and I’m really pleased for them that they’re getting rewarded for the hard work.”

Particularly in the midweek win over strugglers Wycombe the Addicks had to fight for every ball – the clash was extremely physical but Bowyer’s side were up to the task as they battled their way to a third straight win.

Having a watertight defence is all well and good but if you can’t score goals then you won’t get wins. Fortunately though, Lyle Taylor has come into great form since the January departure of then-top-scorer Karlan Grant, but Bowyer hints that his side should still be doing better in front of goal.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

The Valley outfit have won by two goals or more just once in their last ten games, with 2-1 the most frequent scoreline. If the Addicks are to secure automatic promotion, then they must start putting their chances away more often as it only takes one corner, one counter-attack or one set-piece to lose or draw a game.

Leyton Orient: O’s will find it difficult to keep hold of Dan Happe this summer

It’s been a remarkable rise for Dan Happe in the past five months, and it’s only getting better for the young defender.

The 20-year-old scored his first goal for the club in their massive 2-1 win away to Sutton United as the centre-back sent Leyton Orient back to the top of the National League table.

Since breaking through into the first-team at the turn of the year Happe has seen his stock rise with the east London side, with reports last month from the Sun indicating that Premier League and Championship sides were interested in the centre-back, who Orient value at £200,000.

Whether or not Happe and the O’s are promoted into the Football League come May, it will be difficult for Orient to keep hold of their star prospect.

With his performances continuing to impress and his class at the back keeping the east London side top of the National League pile, interest will be high for the defender, and Orient might be willing to sell especially if they are promoted to League Two.

£200,000 is a big fee for a player in the National League, and if a team is to come in for Happe with a fee of around that area, Orient could have no option but to sell for not only the good of the player but also to keep the finances in check.

Orient are likely to be promoted this season, and doing so will cause some of their players to attract interest from bigger teams in higher divisions, and in Happe, they have one player who they will find hard to keep hold of.

Newcastle fans react to referee appointment for Brighton clash

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to an update from the club, who informed fans that Mike Dean will take charge of their trip to Brighton.

Newcastle are now mathematically safe from relegation after Liverpool beat Cardiff on Sunday evening, with the Magpies of course taking three points against Southampton on Saturday.

Still, the club’s future is completely up in the air due to the uncertainty surrounding both the owner and manager, and fans will want to enjoy every last second of Rafael Benitez’s tenure if this is to be the last of it.

Good riddance: Newcastle fans blast Kenedy performance vs Brighton

Disgraceful: Leeds fans aren’t happy with what Marcelo Bielsa was asked

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans have taken to Twitter in fury after Marcelo Bielsa was asked if he’d be spying on Derby again, with both teams now set to face each other in the play-off semi-finals.

The former Marseille boss came under fire back in February after a member of Leeds’ staff was spotted outside the Rams’ training ground, before he later admitted to sending a spy to watch every single side his men have faced this season.

Who are the best away fans in the Championship? Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden gives his top 10 in the video below…

The English Football League hit Leeds with a whopping £200,000 fine for their actions, which Bielsa paid in full himself.

So, having had to shell out such a sum, it is no wonder why Bielsa didn’t take kindly to being asked if he’d be spying again, and then to be told he has no sense of humour after the journalist in question said he was only joking.

Let’s see what the livid Leeds fans on Twitter have been saying about the incident…
