Newcastle fans react as report hints at mass player exodus

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to a report from The Sun, which claims five first-team stars could leave in the wake of Rafael Benitez’s departure.

For all the talk of possible signings, a takeover bid and a manager dispute, everyone seems to have forgotten that there’s nothing Mike Ashley loves more than selling his players on for a profit.

And, according to The Sun, four other first-team regulars could join Isaac Hayden on the exit list, who has been yearning for a move for some time now due to personal reasons, per Chronicle Live.

This new report claims Ayoze Perez, Fabian Schar, Martin Dubravka and Federico Fernandez are now all open to leaving the club.

2-0 down? No worries. Newcastle fans show why they’re some of the best in the country in the video below…

Schar, Dubravka and Perez in particular will be viewed as huge sources of profit if the club do decide to sell, as the trio were bought for just £3m, £3.6m and £1.8m respectively.

Loads of fans have been weighing in on the report, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Two reasons Liverpool should take a gamble on Ousmane Dembele

[ad_pod ]

According to TEAMtalk, Barcelona are prepared to let Frenchman Ousmane Dembele join Liverpool as long as they pay the initial £96.8m they parted with in 2017 for his services. Things have not gone to plan for the former Borussia Dortmund man in La Liga, with injuries halting his progress and attitude problems leading him into trouble with the club’s hierarchy.

However, despite these issues, Dembele is a top-class footballer. Here are two reasons why Liverpool should take a gamble and bring the troubled winger in this summer…

Jurgen Klopp’s track record

Because Dembele’s name has long been mentioned amongst the most promising footballers on the planet, it is easy to forget he is just 22 years old and has just four full seasons of professional football under his belt. He has his whole career ahead of him, and has shown the potential to become a world star-  his numbers from his time at Dortmund, racking up 10 goals and 22 assists in 50 appearances, prove that.

Jurgen Klopp has a track record of turning players into fully-fledged stars. At Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the best example, and at Dortmund Mario Gotze, Mats Hummels, Neven Subotic and Christian Pulisic all broke through under his tutelage. Dembele, it seems, needs the right manager to become a polished rather than rough diamond, and Klopp could be the man to do just that.

Klopp’s traditional style of play suits Dembele

Barcelona’s philosophy is based around possession play and breaking their opponents down over time. A lot of their play goes through Lionel Messi, with other attacking players sometimes forced to remain on the periphery.

Whilst Dembele has not exactly disappointed in Spain, scoring 18 goals and providing 17 assists, the Barca style does not suit his attributes. With his pace and ability to beat a man, he is best suited to swift counter-attacking football.

This is exactly the kind of football Liverpool produced during the 2017/18 season. Although last term was overall a much more measured approach because teams sat deep against them, they still scored the third-most counter-attacking goals of any Premier League side and there’s a clear benefit to retaining that manner of getting forward even if it’s not always the primary game-plan.

Dembele would be the perfect signing to ensure Klopp still has that option when needed, which will most likely be in the bigger games. Liverpool will need to win plenty of those next season if they want to lift the Premier League title.

Should Leeds sign Massimo Luongo?

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United have been linked with plenty of players this summer, but a recent transfer rumour has seen QPR midfielder Massimo Luongo mentioned as a potential recruit.

Luongo has proven himself to be a good player at this level, winning QPR’s Supporters’ Player of the Year award for the 2017/18 season after scoring six goals from midfield.

Marcelo Bielsa is seemingly pretty set on having Kalvin Phillips and Mateusz Klich in his engine room with both players starting more than 40 games last season, so there are grounds to suggest this may be a rather unnecessary signing.

With that in mind, it’s tough to decipher though whether or not Luongo would be a good addition. On one hand he has quality at this level, but on the other he may struggle to start over Klich or Phillips and there’s no concrete evidence on how he’d perform in the Premier League.

Surely promotion is the ultimate goal at Elland Road right now, so judging whether players can make the step up to the top flight if Leeds get there should be a key consideration for any signings going forward too.

Football FanCast’s writers have attempted to deliver their verdicts on whether or not the Whites should sign the Australian.

Matt Dawson

“Luongo wouldn’t be a glamorous signing but he certainly has the ability to make an impact for Leeds and as a result, they should be trying to pursue him this summer. The Australian only scored three goals and claimed four assists last term for QPR but that probably isn’t a fair reflection of his quality. The 26-year-old is a seasoned professional with 42 international caps and as he approaches his prime, this could be a shrewd signing. After all, this is a player who was once on the longlist for the Ballon d’Or. Surely that is enough to peak Leeds’ fans interest? Bielsa should make a move if the price is right.”

James Beavis

“Leeds United should steer clear of Luongo, as he would only block Jamie Shackleton’s path when it comes to regular first-team minutes. The 19-year-old showed glimpses of the quality that he can bring to the middle of the park with two starts in the Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County, and the addition of Luongo could only serve to push him back down the pecking order.

The Australian certainly hasn’t been an outstanding performer for Queens Park Rangers at this level by any means – he has 10 goals and 16 assists in 152 appearances in all competitions for the west London outfit – and he would face a battle to displace the likes of Phillips and Klich from the starting XI himself should he arrive at Elland Road.

What he would bring is some battling qualities given he has picked up an impressive 20 league bookings in the last two seasons for QPR. Victor Orta though, must look for someone better.”

Ben Goodwin

“On the surface Luongo seems like the perfect player to sign with Phillips’ future still uncertain, as the QPR man averages 3.1 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game to Phillips’ 2.6 tackles and 1.3 interceptions. However, Luongo completes just 71% of his passes and only 2.5 long balls per game, while the Leeds man finds a white shirt with 82% of his passes and launches an impressive 4.6 long balls. If the club are indeed searching for a Phillips replacement this summer, then they need one with superior technical quality to Luongo, who could struggle in Bielsa’s free-flowing possession-based system.”

Bakayoko could prove the Chelsea doubters wrong at Man Utd

[ad_pod ]

According to French outlet RMC Sport, Manchester United are very interested in making a move for Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko this summer.

What’s the word?

The report claims that both United and French giants PSG have “entered into contact” with Bakayoko’s representatives over a possible move and that the Red Devils especially have shown “particular intent”.

It adds that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have contacted Chelsea directly to discuss a potential deal, despite the Frenchman returning to pre-season training with the Blues last week.

Whilst Bakayoko’s last dismal outings in English football remain fresh in the memory, the 24-year-old’s revival at Milan could be the making of him next season if he returns to the Premier League with United.

Chelsea’s loss could be United’s gain

After the former AS Monaco midfielder’s debut campaign at Stamford Bridge ended, the overriding feeling was that the Blues had been massively duped out of £40m.

So when he was shipped out on loan to Milan, it was perhaps regarded as inevitable that his one solitary year with Chelsea might be his first and last experience in English football. Instead, his return to form last season at the San Siro could see him develop into an even better player for United.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

In 37 appearances for Milan, Bakayoko averaged 2.3 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game; a clear reminder that he was back to his best in a defensive midfield role. Indeed, his much-maligned and ridiculed passing was also significantly better, registering a fine 86.6% pass accuracy. At United, playing as the side’s sole midfield anchor could see him get back to doing what he does best – breaking up the play, then moving it on.

Perhaps even more crucial than the stats are the intangibles that come up with Bakayoko’s potential arrival. That age-old chip on the shoulder. The 6 foot 1 Frenchman was left “disappointed” by failing to break into Maurizio Sarri’s plans last summer and there is likely a nagging feeling that he was deemed not quite good enough by his parent club.

He would therefore arrive at Old Trafford with a point to prove and that could see him step his game up another notch for a United side that desperately need a lift. Heading to the Blues’ Premier League rivals could see him deliver a damning statement of the west London side’s decision by producing stand-out performances week-in and week-out.

Landing Benrahma could be crucial for Wesley at Aston Villa

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Aston Villa have already signed numerous forward players this summer, landing Wesley for a club-record £22m whilst also bringing Jota and Anwar El Ghazi in on temporary deals.

However, that hasn’t stopped them from reportedly pursuing other attackers too.

Recently the Villans have been linked with a move for Egyptian winger Trezeguet who contributed to 18 goals in the Turkish Super Lig last term.

But speculation surrounding Brentford’s Said Benrahma is failing to go away.

Last month Le10 Sport reported that Dean Smith’s side had an interest in the winger, before Sky Sports then claimed the Bees had rejected a bid from the Midlands outfit for his services.

After the news was revealed that the club had signed Tyrone Mings, it was suggested by The Guardian that they were still keen on the Algerian.

He was in scintillating form in the Championship last term, scoring ten goals as well as laying on 14 assists for his teammates.

And it’s that creative nous that could be extremely beneficial for Wesley if he does indeed make the switch to Villa Park.

In the second tier last term he created 2.3 chances per game, finishing the season with the same number of key passes every 90 minutes as a certain Jack Grealish.

The Villa skipper was at the top of the charts in terms of Villa players in that statistic so Benrahma could give them a much-needed dose of creativity from a wide area.

Last term, El Ghazi produced the highest number of key passes from out on the flanks, making 1.3 per game.

The stats after him, however, were rather underwhelming.

If Villa want to establish themselves in the Premier League as they return to the top of the tree in English football, ensuring their new striker gets off to a promising start will be crucial.

Landing Benrahma could significantly improve the chances of that happening. He displayed remarkable consistency in terms of his chance creation, making seven key passes against Bolton.

He also played six against his potential new team back in February.

It’s likely that the 23-year-old wouldn’t get as much time on the ball if he made the leap to the top-flight, but the point stands that Benrahma’s creativity could help Wesley.

The forward scored just ten league goals for Club Brugge last season, but with the help of a creative wide player could hit the ground running immediately at a higher level.

Liverpool can’t chuck Rhian Brewster in at the deep end

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Liverpool have a rather exciting youngster on their hands.

Rhian Brewster, the striker who lit up the Under-17 World Cup when England were victorious in 2017, scored eight goals at the tournament, winning the Golden Boot, and is training with the Reds on their pre-season tour of the United States.

He is so highly thought of at Anfield that he signed a five-year contract in 2018.

He has yet to make his senior competitive debut for the club, but he has been exposed to the first-team.

He was on the bench for the miraculous 4-0 win over Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final and again for the final, as Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-0 in Madrid.

Brewster has also been a substitute in the Premier League, as the Reds lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace in 2017.

But the Reds would be well advised to avoid simply sticking Brewster in their first-team and hoping for the best in 2019/20.

Admittedly, there isn’t a whole lot of depth beyond the fabled front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane but he is not yet ready to be thrown in the deep end.

He is a prodigious talent and such youngsters have to be given an opportunity to play regularly.

The best place for that to happen remains in Liverpool’s youth teams.

He has made 21 appearances for the Under-23s, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists, and has had 11 outings for the Under-18s, scoring five times.

This is not to say that Brewster simply cannot be playing for the first-team.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But manager Jurgen Klopp will have to be careful with his exposure.

Brewster is best off playing regularly and being called upon when he is needed.

If Liverpool draw lower-league opposition in the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup, there is nothing to say he cannot be called upon.

Ditto if the Reds have a Champions League dead rubber, say at the end of the group stages, then one has to feel that Brewster could replace Salah and play up front.

But routinely placing him on the bench for Premier League outings doesn’t do anything to serve his development; if Liverpool want him to be the best he can be, he absolutely must be playing regularly.

Celtic fans are buzzing that Arsenal’s third bid for Kieran Tierney has been rejected

[ad_pod ]

Celtic have turned down Arsenal’s advances for Kieran Tierney for the third and possibly final time, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has been the subject of three bids from Unai Emery’s side but it looks like a deal could be off, according to The Daily Record.

Their report claims that the unrealistic add-ons in Arsenal’s bids halted the deal, and that the Gunners are unlikely to return for a fourth time.

Watch Celtic Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The £25m fee offered by Arsenal would’ve met the Hoops’ valuation of the player had it come in one big payment, but the offers included staggered payments and add-ons based on things like qualification for the Champions League, something which Sky Sports claim the Bhoys took issue with.

Of course, the Parkhead faithful are buzzing that it now appears as though their rising star will stay put. The Scotland international is only 22, but has racked up 170 games, eight goals, 37 assists and a whopping 11 trophies.

Here’s what the delighted fans had to stay about the latest news on Twitter…

Premier League Transfer Roundup: Pepe news, Liverpool sign Elliott, Everton in Kean talks

[ad_pod ]

There are just 11 days, and counting, before the Premier League transfer window slams shut on August 8th. There is still time for the country’s top clubs to complete their transfer business, but they need to start getting a move on. Today’s Premier League transfer roundup is made up of Arsenal’s pursuit of Nicolas Pepe, Harvey Elliott’s switch to Liverpool and Everton’s talks for Moise Kean.

Arsenal agree Pepe fee

Report: It is understood that Arsenal have agreed a fee with Lille in regards to the purchase of Nicolas Pepe. The Gunners will pay £72m in instalments for the Ivory Coast international, with the deal expected to be completed by Wednesday.

Verdict: Considering Unai Emery is said to have just £45m to spend this summer, this comes as a surprise to say the least. If the deal goes through, it will be the joint-fourth highest fee ever paid by a Premier League club. Whilst it does come out of the blue, it would be a great move in an attacking sense for the Gunners and complete a potent trio with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Between them, they contributed directly to 105 goals last season.

However, Arsenal are in need of some defensive reinforcements – in the past campaign’s top 10, only Manchester United and West Ham conceded more than the 51 they shipped. Whilst William Saliba has been brought in, he will go straight back to Saint-Etienne on loan until next summer so, as it stands, there are no new faces in their backline.

How likely is the deal? 9/10

Liverpool sign Elliott

Report: Harvey Elliott has completed a move to Liverpool from Fulham. The 16-year-old has not yet turned professional as he needs to be 17 to do so, but he has already made his first appearance for the club in the Reds’ 3-0 loss against Napoli on Sunday.

Verdict: Just like the signing of Sepp van den Berg earlier in the transfer window, the capture of Elliott is one for the future. The teenager’s career is only just starting, but he is already a record-breaker – he became the youngest Premier League player in history when he made his top-tier debut for Fulham last season. Former teammate Tom Cairney said that Elliott has the skill to  “wow” people, so he is clearly a decent prospect. He is also an England youth international having scored twice in five matches for the U17s. Whilst we are unlikely to see too much of him this season, he is one to keep an ear out for.

How likely is the deal? Completed

Everton in Kean talks

Report: According to Sky Sports, Everton are in talks with Juventus in regards to the purchase of Moise Kean. Ademola Lookman has recently left Goodison Park to move to RB Leipzig and, as such, the Toffees see Kean as the perfect replacement.

Verdict: Kean is one Europe’s brightest young talents, and has already made an impression at Juventus by scoring eight goals in 21 appearances for the Old Lady. His performances for the Serie A champions have even earned him three caps for Italy, in which he netted twice. Even at just 19 years of age, the 2019 Golden boy nominee knows where the back of the net is, which is why Everton are interested in him.

Of the two out-and-out strikers at Marco Silva’s disposal last season, Dominic Calvert-Lewin bagged eight and Cenk Tosun four. And, having not even turned 20, he still has plenty of time in front of him to hone his skills. For £36m, it is a transfer that makes sense, although Juve’s insistence on a buy-back clause will be a slight cause for concern.

How likely is the deal? 7/10

Everton simply cannot consider Stanislav Lobotka as a replacement for Idrissa Gueye

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

According to France Football (via Sport Witness), Everton have identified Celta Vigo midfielder Stanislav Lobotka as a potential replacement for Idrissa Gueye, whilst Mainz’s Jean-Philippe Gbamin is also on their list of candidates.

The Toffees are reportedly looking to sign four or five players before the deadline on August 8, with Marcel Brands set to be a busy man as a right-back, winger and striker are targeted whilst the pursuit of Kurt Zouma goes on.

Amongst those four or five players being targeted by the Merseysiders is a replacement for Gueye, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth £30m on Tuesday, and it seems as if Lobotka and Gbamin are the two names on the shortlist.

Whilst Gbamin seems like a fairly decent option to replace the Senegal international, Lobotka simply cannot be considered as a replacement for Gueye as his statistics are nowhere near that of the PSG new boy’s.

For a start, Gueye recorded 4.3 tackles per game and 2.2 interceptions per game across his 33 starts in the Premier League last term, as well as 1.3 clearances per game.

Lobotka is being considered as his replacement and is naturally a defensive midfielder, but his stats are quite simply nowhere near Gueye’s.

The Slovakian averaged just one tackle per game in La Liga last season, along with 0.8 interceptions and 0.5 clearances across 31 league appearances.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

It doesn’t take a genius to realise that those numbers are substantially worse than Gueye’s from a defensive viewpoint, and that if Everton seriously view him as a potential replacement, they should probably give their heads a bit of a wobble.

Admittedly, Gueye was an excellent player in his position and few players got near his numbers – he recorded more tackles on average than any other player in the Premier League last term.

But having said that, there must be better options out there for Everton instead of the far inferior 24-year-old.

Could the Manchester giants do more to help out their ailing neighbour Bury?

[ad_pod ]

The present plight of Bury football club is atrociously grim and sadly one that is becoming all-too-commonplace beyond the mega-rich playground of the Premier League.

At the end of July the Shakers successfully fought off a winding up order at the fourth attempt but are mired in £4m of debt.

At the helm is an owner in Steve Dale, who took control of the ailing club back in December without the full approval of the EPL. Six months later he responded to complaints by club staff that they had not been paid by releasing a 1,300 word statement that accused said staff of ‘causing all this unpleasantness with their internet troll accomplices’.

Having upset the odds last term to achieve promotion from League Two under the watchful eye of highly-rated coach Ryan Lowe, who has since departed for Plymouth, their circumstance is so grave that Bury have cancelled their first three games of the season and consequently could be kicked out of the football league.

Additionally they start this defining campaign with a twelve point deficit, the punishment reluctantly dished out by the EFL following the club’s receipt of notice that a Company Voluntary Arrangement was passed.

In one way – and only one way – Bury’s fixture suspension is a blessing. They currently have a squad of just nine players.

Nine miles down the M60 from the crisis-hit club stands the imposing environs of the Etihad and a dominant force in English football whose biggest financial concern this summer concerned whether they should shell out £60m on a full-back they merely desired than needed.

To compare these neighbours is to put a pauper to a prince and the same can be said of the other behemoth that resides locally, namely Manchester United.

With possible expulsion from the league still hanging over Bury’s head, and given the enormous wealth and resources of the two Manchester giants nearby, it has been noted of late that perhaps City and United could step in and help.

Perhaps they could in some way bridge the enormous disparity between the billionaires and the broke who all inhabit the same footballing pyramid.

It is something that Nigel Clough has spoken about recently, stating that Premier League outfits have a ‘responsibility’ to bail out struggling institutions such as Bolton and Bury.

Others, meanwhile, have an opposing view, as illustrated in the tweet below and playing devil’s advocate on this maybe it ultimately comes down to rhetoric: responsibility versus obligation. The former borders on the incontestable. The latter less so.

The truth of the matter is, however, that Manchester City have been assisting Bury – and for some time too – by allowing them to use their old Carrington training ground rent-free.

Sadly this is an arrangement that has come to an end of late, with City unhappy at the state of the pitches and vexed too by break-ins.

It was an arrangement that still saved Bury an estimated £80,000 a year and a grand total of £350,000.

Check out what happened when Thogden mixed with some of Montenegro’s craziest ultras in the video below…

On United’s side, a legends game played at Gigg Lane last summer brought in a bumper crowd, while the Shakers’ close links to the Neville family – Gary and Phil’s father, Neville Neville, has a stand named after him at Bury after many years outstanding service – throws up rumours of the former United mainstays dipping in to their own pockets to help out the club.

The question then is not whether City and United should help out their desperate fellow North West outfit: it’s whether they could and should be doing more.

That comes down to responsibility and, at an ethical push, obligation.

It is a difficult one to call.
