Kia Joorabchian "taking care" of Morato transfer to Spurs after £60m update

Super agent Kia Joorabchian is reportedly attempting to get a highly-rated centre-back to Tottenham as his club gift a £60 million discount.

Postecoglou requests new centre-back in January

As widely reported by sections of the media, Spurs are looking to sign a new defender when the transfer window opens for business next month.

Tottenham favourites to sign "serious" defender who's "similar" to Maldini

Mauro Tassotti thinks he resembles the Milan legend.

We're now fast approaching January and more reports are flooding in that Tottenham are beginning to make moves for their reported targets. There are many names linked with moves to N17 as manager Ange Postecoglou publicly admits that his side need to bring in another centre-back, especially after injuries to Micky van de Ven, Ashley Phillips and Eric Dier.

"He’s done remarkably well," said Postecoglou on Ben Davies, who's been forced to play a makeshift central defensive role this season (via football.london).

"Centre-back is still a position where, especially in our structure, it is one of the few positions where you need guys with outstanding attributes in there. We’ve been very fortunate that he’s been able to fill in for us there. He’s really good at taking in information, he really understands the game, not just his own role but how we want to play and that’s helped him.

"Having Romero next to him helps in that sense and Vic because he’s taken a bit of a leadership role back there as well. Ultimately, we still need to sign another centre-back because at the moment we are a little bit on tenterhooks because if something happens again we are short and we are already short."

The likes of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo and Genoa star Radu Dragusin are some centre-backs wanted by Spurs ahead of January, while another player to be mentioned is Benfica starlet Morato.

According to recent reports, Morato is a top transfer target for Spurs and viewed as one of the most exciting defensive talents in his country right now (The Sun).

Joorabchian "taking care" of Morato move to Tottenham

Italian news outlet Calciomercato.it have an update on the 22-year-old, and it's quite intriguing.

According to their information, super agent Joorabchian is "personally taking care of" Morato's potential Spurs transfer with the Lilywhites "serious" about signing him.

This comes after they sent their scouts to run the rule over Morato on a consistent basis this term, and the report suggests Benfica are willing to give interested clubs a £60m discount.

Calciomercato.it claim his release clause actually stands at around €100m (£86m), but Benfica have now slapped a €30m (£26m) price tag on his head as they look to sell for a much cheaper fee.

This could be a prime opportunity for Spurs to move for Morato, especially with Joorabchian's help, as chairman Daniel Levy will be looking to seal the best possible bargains in what is usually a tough window.

Emery could sign Aston Villa a "special" Watkins partner this January

Aston Villa begin 2024 by occupying the heights of second place in the Premier League table after a wonderful start to the 2023/24 campaign.

Unai Emery won't be resting on his laurels, however, as there is still work to be done to secure a top-four finish, especially with clubs such as Manchester City and Arsenal lurking just below them.

Unai Emery

The Spaniard has built a solid starting XI that, on their day, can defeat anyone in the league. With knockout stage European football secured, however, Emery will be keen to add a few more players to his team during the January transfer window, and they have their eyes on a Serie A striker.

Aston Villa transfer news – Albert Gudmundsson

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport (via Football Italia), Aston Villa have scouted the Genoa striker Albert Gudmundsson several times this season as they plot a move for the player.

Brentford and Crystal Palace are the other clubs who are showing interest in the centre-forward and the report indicates that the Midlands outfit will continue to scout him ahead of making a potential swoop in the summer.

Villa have had a great end to 2023, and FFC has taken a look back at Aston Villa’s best bits of January business as the window opens once more…

ByBrogan Clasper Dec 31, 2023

Gudmundsson has recently signed a contract extension until 2027, yet if he continues to score in Serie A, plenty of clubs will be lining up to sign him at the end of the season.

Albert Gudmundsson’s season in numbers

The former AZ Alkmaar frontman has been in sublime form in front of goal for Genoa during the 2023/24 season so far.

The Iceland international has found the back of the net on seven occasions in the Italian top flight this term, including strikes against Juventus and AS Roma, and he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Albert Gudmundsson

The 5 foot 9 gem has been dubbed “special” by writer Rajath Kumar this season and if he moved to Villa, he could strike up a solid partnership with Ollie Watkins.

The Englishman has often operated alongside either Moussa Diaby or Jhon Duran on occasions this season, but he could do with a player like Gudmundsson next to him. Indeed, Diaby has only found the net once in his last ten outings.

Watkins, on the other hand, has scored 14 goals in 27 appearances this season, and he has been revitalised under Emery over the previous 12 months.

Over the previous year, Gudmundsson has stood out in a few performance metrics when compared to his positional peers in Europe's top five leagues and these statistics could allow him to link up well with Watkins.

Indeed, the 26-year-old ranks in the top 4% for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.58), the top 7% for progressive passes per 90 (3.58) and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.88) and he could be the perfect foil for the Villa striker.

Emery won't be rushing to make just any signing, especially as it appears he is building a team that can genuinely challenge for glory, but it is clear he needs to bring in at least one or two new players this month.

While a move for Gudmundsson isn’t looking like it will go through in January, he must continue to keep tabs on the player, especially with how well he has played in Italy this season, and he could become a valuable signing in the summer.

Fitness standards 'not where they needed to be' in UAE – Mickey Arthur

Arthur has been a major proponent of changes in the fitness standards of international cricketers in Pakistan since his appointment in 2016

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Apr-2019Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur said suffering a clean sweep at home against Australia “hurts us incredibly”. Addressing a press conference after the team returned home from Dubai – having lost all five ODIs – Arthur pointed to the number of players Pakistan had decided to rest, but conceded the side’s fielding and fitness fell well below the standards required over the five games.”I think on this tour, our fitness standards and our fielding were not where they needed to be,” Arthur said. “That’s understandable when you see the likes of young Abid Ali, Hasnain, and guys like that hadn’t been in our setup before. Those that had been in our setup for a long period of time, who know what the standards are, are aware we will never ever compromise on fitness.”All our key players are fit enough going into the World Cup. It’s our strength players, those that sit just under our setup that is worrying. How we pull those guys up to the level required is going to rest on themselves and on the structure to give them that education to make sure when they step up into our side, they are ready to perform on the level we expect.”Pakistan’s ODI form has been a worry over the past 15 months, with the team having lost ODI series against New Zealand, South Africa and Australia in addition to a dismal Asia Cup outing in September 2018. Arthur, however, cautioned against panicking weeks out from the World Cup, pointing out Pakistan still had plenty of games to play before the tournament began.”This series was an opportunity to rest our key players ahead of what is a very demanding schedule leading up to the World Cup,” Arthur said. “We’ve got 11 fully fledged games of cricket from the beginning of May until our first World Cup game. That includes three games against counties, five ODIs against England and then two warm-up games for the World Cup.”So we viewed this tour of an opportunity to look at a final few places. Inzi and I had a look at the final places that we were looking to secure. We looked at the areas we wanted players. We wanted to give our next tear of players an opportunity to play at the highest level, to see what they can do. You’re only good as your bench strength, so for us, our bench strength is incredibly important.”Abid Ali scored 112 – his debut hundred – and Mohammad Rizwan made 104, but it wasn’t enough to chase down Australia’s total of 277•Getty ImagesArthur also pointed out that Pakistan could come away from the series with some positives, especially in the batting department. “Five hundreds across the series was the impressive thing. The fact that I think we’ve certainly found a batsman [Abid Ali], we’ve found a young quick bowler that’s going to serve Pakistan well for the years to come [Mohammad Hasnain] and probably sorted our fast bowling leading into the World Cup. From that point of view, we saw a lot of positive things. Quite a few negatives as well and those need to get sorted out and sorted out quickly.”Arthur was more reserved about what conclusions he had reached with respect to Pakistan’s World Cup squad, keeping his cards close to his chest, but did say he was on the same page with chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq.”We’ll meet this afternoon. We’ve got individual plans for every one of our players,” Arthur said. “Those individual plans will evolve into the England tour, especially for the guys that we want to take [to the World Cup]. Inzi, myself and selectors will sit down in the next couple of days and start our final work towards that World Cup squad. We’ll have fitness testing around April 14 and 15, and we’ll work back on individual planning again today.”He also had time to single out Mohammad Rizwan for praise. Until January, Rizwan had not played an international for Pakistan for over two years, firmly a back-up to the ever-present Sarfaraz Ahmed. Now, he has played 10 internationals for the country on the bounce, and was one of the standout batsmen on tour, scoring two hundreds and finishing as the second-highest scorer for Pakistan this series. But Arthur also made it clear Pakistan were in no way vacillating over the wicketkeeping position.”We know Saify [Sarfaraz] is our captain and our first choice wicketkeeper. And he’s going to lead us into the World Cup.”

Mbappe to leave PSGExpected to join Real MadridFrance international to say farewell this weekendGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

The France international has confirmed that he is leaving PSG this summer, ahead of an expected move to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants have long been linked with a bid for the World Cup winner, and it finally appears that the deal will go through once the transfer window opens, and when his contract expires.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe's future has been unclear for months but there is now an official confirmation from the player himself that he will be departing the city he was born in. Real Madrid had the opportunity to sign the global star last season but refused to pay PSG's hefty asking price and instead opted to wait until he became a free agent. This summer, he will likely join Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham in Madrid as the Spanish giants assemble one of the most talented squads of the modern era.

WHAT MBAPPE SAID

Speaking through a video message on social media, Mbappe said: "I've always said I would speak to you when this time comes and so I wanted to announce to you all that it's my last year at Paris Saint-Germain, I will not extend and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks. It's a lot of emotions, it's hard and I never thought it would be this difficult to announce that I am leaving my country, but I think I needed this, a new challenge after seven years.

"PSG is a club that never leaves anyone indifferent, I do not regret at any moment signing with this prestigious club. It's a club I will keep in my memory my entire life. I won't be a player anymore but I will continue to always watch every game. I wanted to say thank you because without you all I would never have felt half the emotions I felt. Thank you all, I hope we will finish this year with a last trophy and I believe you will remain in my heart forever."

Out-of-form Amla wants to 'fine-tune batting' ahead of World Cup

South Africa batsman to miss remainder of CSA T20 Challenge for Cape Cobras

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-2019Hashim Amla has pulled out of the Cape Cobras squad for the remainder of the CSA T20 Challenge.”I have opted not to make myself available for selection for the Cape Cobras for the remainder of the CSA T20 Challenge,” read a statement released by Amla. “I express my sincere gratitude to the Cobras coaching staff and team for the game time over the last three weeks, given the circumstances.”Cobras have one remaining round-robin game against Dolphins at Kingsmead on Sunday. They are currently placed second after having lead the pack for much of the competition, with a home semi-final at stake in their final game.Amla opted to play in the competition instead of seeking a short-term opportunity with a county side, as Aiden Markram has, in order to be closer to his father, who has been seriously ill for some time, while also securing vital game time as he works through a spell of poor form.Amla briefly left the Cobras squad to return to Durban to be at his father’s side last week. The game he missed – against Knights in Bloemfontein – was in any case abandoned without a ball bowled due to inclement weather. Amla subsequently returned to the team for their matches against Titans and Lions, scoring 3 and 10.While Cobras have enjoyed significant success – winning five matches – Amla’s own returns from the eight games he has played in have been modest. He has scored 92 runs at a strike rate of 83.63 with a top score of 32, showing only brief flashes of the sort of batting that has built his formidable reputation over the years.Despite his struggle for form over the last year, Amla was named in South Africa’s World Cup squad. In just over two weeks, the South African squad will assemble for a pre-tournament team camp before departing for the World Cup, and Amla wants to “use the remaining time before the World Cup to fine-tune my batting.”

Celtic "expect to land" £2m playmaker who could unlock Kyogo

Celtic appear to be closing in on a deal to secure their first signing of the January transfer window, which opened for business at the start of last week.

Celtic transfer news – Nicolas Kuhn

FootballScotland reporter Mark Hendry claims that the Hoops "expect to land" Rapid Wien forward Nicolas Kuhn before the end of the month.

The journalist adds that Brendan Rodgers would also like to bring in another centre-forward and a left-back to bolster his squad over the next few weeks.

On top of this, The Scottish Sun have revealed that talks are already underway between the two clubs, and further discussions over a move for the exciting winger are expected.

Kyogo Furuhashi

Rodgers could now unlock Kyogo Furuhashi by securing a swoop for the Wien playmaker, who The Scottish Sun previously claimed is valued at around £2m.

Kyogo's season in numbers

The Japan international has struggled in front of goal so far this season with a return of eight goals in 22 Scottish Premiership appearances.

He has found the back of the net once every 190 minutes of top-flight action for the Hoops and has not been anywhere near as prolific as last term.

Kyogo plundered an incredible 27 goals in 31 Premiership starts throughout the 2022/23 campaign, which is an average of one strike every 86 minutes.

As you can see in the table above, the Celtic star has taken over twice as many shots from range already this season – in 14 fewer appearances – and this suggests that he has not had enough service within the box.

The statistics that show why Kuhn could unlock Kyogo

The Hoops now appear to be closing in on a player who could create high-quality opportunities for the forward on a regular basis as Kuhn has showcased his creativity on a regular basis this term.

During the 2023/24 campaign, the 24-year-old whiz has made 16 appearances in the Bundesliga for Rapid Wien and caught the eye with five assists, 11 'big chances' created, and 1.8 key passes per match.

As you can see from the table above, Rodgers' current options on the right of his front three have not been outstanding creators at the top end of the pitch to create good opportunities for Kyogo week-in-week-out.

Whereas, Luis Palma on the left flank has produced nine assists, 11 'big chances' created, and 3.1 key passes per game in 17 Premiership outings.

Meanwhile, the reported Hoops target has provided more assists, more 'big chances' created, and more key passes per match than Maeda, Abada, Yang, and Forrest in league action.

Celtic winger Hyun-jun Yang.

This suggests that Kuhn, who UEFA licensed coach @Inverthewing on X claimed is "dominating" at Wien, could be a major upgrade on the club's current right-sided attackers as a creative outlet.

If the German wizard can translate his current performances over to football in Scotland then he would be a fantastic signing who could unlock Kyogo by providing the striker with far more 'big chances' inside the box to get back to his prolific best.

The Japan international is currently being forced to take on too many shots from distance and it has clearly had a negative impact on his output in front of goal, which is why Rodgers needs a better creator to play on the right and that is exactly what Kuhn could be.

Celtic could land dream O’Riley partner after talks to sign 5 ft 11 ace

The January transfer window is due to slam shut in just over a week and Scottish giants Celtic appear set to enjoy, or endure, a busy end to the month.

Brendan Rodgers has already made one signing so far this month as 24-year-old winger Nicolas Kuhn has joined from Austrian side Rapid Wien on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

That is expected to be the first of many before the end of the window as the Northern Irish head coach also has his eye on a left-back, a goalkeeper, and a striker, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

This means that Hoops supporters could have an exciting 12 days or so to look forward to if the club are able to land their top targets to bolster the squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Alongside Kuhn, a left-back, a goalkeeper, and a centre-forward, Celtic are also reportedly attempting to land a new defensive midfielder for Rodgers.

Celtic have held talks to land South Korean talent

According to the Daily Record, the Bhoys have held talks with FC Gwangju over a deal to sign their talented enforcer Ho-yeon Jung before the end of the window.

The Scottish giants are eyeing up a swoop for the impressive midfielder to bolster their options in the middle of the park, which comes after Hyeok-kyu Kwon was allowed to join St. Mirren on loan until the end of the season earlier this month.

Celtic midfielder Hyeok-kyu Kwon.

It states that there is a 'good' chance that a move will progress between the two sides over a transfer for the South Korean battler before the deadline at the start of February.

However, there is no mention of how much Gwangju would demand for his services, how much Celtic are prepared to pay for him in January, or how the talks between the two clubs went.

The Daily Record do add, though, that the South Korean side would prefer Jung to depart at the end of the year. This suggests that they could put a deal off until the end of the season or ask the Hoops to loan him back to them until the 2023/24 campaign.

If Celtic are able to tempt Gwangju into a deal for the midfielder before the deadline, Rodgers could land a dream partner for Matt O'Riley in the middle of the park.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has reported that Spanish side Girona are interested in a deal to sign the Denmark international ahead of the second half of the campaign.

However, the reporter stated that the club are in a strong position after the central midfielder put pen to paper on a 'bumper' contract, which means that they are in control of the situation.

O'Riley's Premiership dominance this season

The 23-year-old magician has been in magnificent form so far this season for the Hoops and has proven himself to be one of the manager's top performers in the division.

He has made the Scottish Premiership his playground with his ability to influence matches at the top end of the pitch on a regular basis for the Bhoys.

O'Riley has contributed with ten goals and seven assists in 21 top-flight matches as a central midfielder, which is more than one goal contribution every other game on average.

No Celtic player has scored more league goals than the Danish ace. He is the only ace who has made it into the double figures for Rodgers, with Kyogo Furuhashi (eight) and David Turnbull (seven) the closest to him.

Meanwhile, Luis Palma (nine) is the only Hoops star with more assists than O'Riley and the only player in the squad with more key passes per game (3.4) than the ex-Fulham prospect (2.6).

As you can see in the table above, the impressive Celtic star has significantly improved his goalscoring output from the middle of the park in comparison to last season.

He has developed the ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis whilst remaining a constant creative presence for his teammates.

Why Jung could be a dream partner for O'Riley

Rodgers could now land a dream partner for O'Riley in midfield with a deal for Jung as he is an impressive defensive midfielder who is also super reliable in possession.

The 23-year-old caught the eye with his impressive displays in the top-flight of South Korean football throughout 2023 and could be an excellent signing for Celtic if the talented ace can translate those showings over to the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, Jung is capable of having highly creative performances in midfield whilst also being a strong presence off the ball.

Jung made 34 K League 1 appearances throughout 2023 and provided his manager with a tough-tackling option, with 2.9 tackles and interceptions combined and 5.4 ball recoveries per match.

Meanwhile, no Celtic midfielder has managed more than 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premiership this season, which suggests that the Hoops target could add a bit more steel to Rodgers' options in that position.

The 5 foot 11 gem, who was once described as a "good prospect" by Asian football expert Dario Focardi, is also impressive with his work in possession.

Jung completed 90% of his attempted passes in the K League 1 last year and only Callum McGregor (93%) and Cameron Carter-Vickers (92.1%) have averaged a higher success rate in the Premiership out of every Celtic player with at least one start.

This suggests that the Gwangju star could retain the ball at an exceptional rate for Rodgers whilst also being a fantastic defender who can win possession back multiple times per game by cutting out opposition attacks.

Therefore, Jung could be a dream partner for O'Riley as he could sit at the base of the midfield and recover the ball before using his efficient passing to find the Danish magician in dangerous positions, where he can then work his magic in the final third.

Wade's record-breaking 155 gives Australia A victory

Playing as a specialist batsman, he smashed the second fastest List A century; Andrew Tye picked up six wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-2019Matthew Wade continued his staggering form on the Australia A tour of the UK with a record-breaking 155 in a comfortable seven-wicket win over Derbyshire.Wade smashed 155 off just 71 balls to help Australia A stroll to their target of 284 in just 35.2 overs. He set a new record for the fastest List A century by an Australian, reaching the milestone in just 45 balls after passing 50 in just 20. He eclipsed the previous record held by former Victoria teammate David Hussey.Wade also posted the second fastest 150 in List A cricket. He took 68 balls to get there, four slower than AB de Villiers’ effort against the West Indies at the SCG in the 2015 World Cup.Wade clubbed 14 fours and 11 sixes, just three days after scoring 117 from 67 balls in Australia A’s win over Northamptonshire. It was not Derbyshire’s first choice attack though, with 18-year-old James Taylor opening the bowling on List A debut while Fynn Hudson-Prentice was playing just his third List A game. But Wade has monstered attacks of all experiences at domestic level over the past 12 months.”I’m happy with the way I’m striking the ball, that’s for sure,” Wade said. “Any time you can go out and get a hundred is nice. To strike it like that in the first two games is certainly satisfying. I know that I can improve in areas of my game.”Any attack that I’ve come across in the short formats over the last 12 or 18 months, I’ve been pretty positive. I know that if I’m positive in the mind I’ll certainly perform at my best rather than just looking to get in and build and innings. That probably hasn’t worked for me over a period of time now.”Wade played as a batsman only in the first two games, with Peter Handscomb taking the gloves, but he is set to keep wickets in the next upcoming matches, against Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.Earlier, Andrew Tye claimed 6 for 65 to help restrict Derbyshire. The hosts were in a strong position with Leus du Plooy making 115, his fifth List A century, while Wayne Madsen added 48 to propel them to 4 for 202 with 11.3 overs remaining. But Tye took six of the last seven wickets to give the visitors a comfortable target to chase.”I haven’t played a 50-over match since October last year,” Tye said. “It took me a little bit of time to find my feet but once I got going it was pretty good for me. I’ve been trying to be more consistent with my stock ball.”The feedback I’ve got from the selectors with my one-day cricket is I need to be able to be more of a useful weapon in the powerplay and through the middle overs. Just to be able to get that consistency working and that’s something I’ve been working hard on throughout the IPL and leading up to this tour.”Sean Abbott picked up 2 for 40 and Michael Neser 1 for 48.Wade made light work of the chase despite the early loss of D’Arcy Short. Skipper Travis Head played a nice supporting role making 68 in a partnership of 205 in just 21.2 overs.
