Ageless Darren Stevens rejuvenates Kent challenge

Buccaneering innings leaves winless Nottinghamshire reeling and staring at relegation

David Hopps at Trent Bridge10-Sep-2019Nottinghamshire 35 for 2 (Slater 18*, Fletcher 1*) trail Kent 304 (Stevens 88, Kuhn 56, Bell-Drummond 45, Ashwin 4-121) by 269 runs
Derbyshire have rejuvenated so many ageing cricketers over the decades that they must presumably have a season’s pass at Tissington’s holy wells where Peak District locals have reputedly given thanks for their health since the Black Death largely by-passed the parish nearly 700 years ago.Darren Stevens had time for only four matches at Derbyshire this summer after gaining a temporary release by Kent for the Vitality Blast, in the knowledge that Kent will release him permanently at the end of the season. But at the start of his Kent end-of-season farewell, he wore his 43 years lightly as he produced the innings that might just have confirmed Nottinghamshire’s slide back into Division Two.Sore eyes, gout and rheumatism are among the more modern ailments likely to be suffered by the locals as they dress the Tissington wells with flowers in an annual ritual. Stevens, ambitious to gain a player-coach role next season, would be reluctant even to admit to a twinge of batsman’s back or bowler’s shoulder. On this evidence, he won’t need to.His brusque intervention changed the course of a Trent Bridge day in which the Indian offspinner, Ravi Ashwin, threatened to put Notts on top on an accommodating surface. At one point, Ashwin had 4 for 35 off 17 overs. Fifteen overs later, after Stevens had pummelled 88 from 90 balls, Ashwin had 4 for 120 and his mystique had been somewhat diluted. He did not bear up to the challenge at all well.A young sprog experiencing his first taste of county cricket or a revered India international with 65 Tests to his name: to Stevens they all come much the same, he likes to feel bat on ball. He took 54 runs off Ashwin in 40 balls, including two sixes, one soaring over long off to announce his arrival, the second a slog sweep over midwicket, dragged from outside off stump.Considering that he had made only one Championship half-century in 14 innings this season, even Stevens would be keenly aware that not too many opportunities will present themselves to add to his 33 first-class centuries. He was 86 when Kent’s ninth wicket fell, standing hand on hip at the non-striker’s end as Harry Podmore edged a rising ball from Paul Coughlin to slip. Coughlin, Notts’ third seamer in a match where they are fielding two spinners, was in the mood for an aggressive finale. Stevens essayed a cumbersome back-away-and-swish. In Coughlin’s next over, on 88, he made solid contact but was caught by Jake Ball on the cover boundary.Notts, so optimistic when they began the season, with a trio of new batsmen to show off, have had a dismal summer. Eight defeats and three draws are the sum of 11 matches have left them 42 points adrift of the second-bottom side, Warwickshire. Only one county will be relegated this season because of a divisional restructuring which might enable them to prolong the agony until they face Warwickshire in their penultimate match at Trent Bridge next week.In the meantime, the coach Peter Moores tells many of his batsmen more attuned to white-ball cricket (and in Alex Hales’ case tuning in to nothing else) that there are no short cuts to Championship success – something the likes of Stevens, whose training regime has never wavered, knows only too well.In response to Kent’s 304, Ben Slater survived 12 overs in which Notts reached 35 for 2. Ben Duckett was protected for the morrow by the stalwart nightwatchman Luke Fletcher, who had also bowled with commendable gumption. Joe Clarke, the most gifted of those new signings, was omitted against Kent, to follow his exclusion from the side that beat Middlesex in the Blast quarter-final and has had the sorriest summer of all.Ashwin must have anticipated much better after returning from 12th-man duties during India’s recent two Tests in the Caribbean. He had two wickets by lunch, 18-year-old Jordan Cox lbw on the back foot to end a patient stay in only his second first-class match and Sam Billings inside-edging onto his pad to be caught at first slip in the final over of the morning.Kent then subsided to 119 for 5 as Ashwin had Daniel Bell-Drummond stumped by Tom Moores and produced an excellent arm ball to bowl Ollie Robinson. But the resistance begun by Heino Kuhn was then continued by Stevens.Marcus O’Riordan, an offspinner on his first-class debut, scored a dozen before falling to Liam Patterson-White’s slow left-arm, and Coughlin finished with three tail-end wickets – his first at Trent Bridge – to bring hopes that he can now put his injuries behind him.Stevens even enjoyed an intervention with the new ball, having Jake Libby lbw with his sixth delivery and running in with three slips and five men on the single. It was the 499th first-class wicket of his career. He has 34 at 22 this season, rushing towards his prize after 23 years of grunt work.If he has helped to send Nottinghamshire down, it would be much to Derbyshire’s taste in a summer where they have also reached Finals Day in the Blast and will be hankering for the chance to face their most illustrious neighbours in the final at Edgbaston on September 21.

Ten Hag could finally replace Casemiro with Man Utd’s "genius"

Manchester United have had something of an unpredictable season throughout the 2023/24 campaign thus far. The Red Devils currently find themselves in sixth position in the Premier League table.

At this moment in time, they also find themselves in a good run of form after winning four of their last five top-flight games.

Erik ten Hag's men are currently sat on 44 points and will be looking at trying to break into the top four spots by the end of the season. In order to do this, they will need to find five points on Aston Villa from somewhere as Unai Emery's men currently occupy fourth place.

The first step in their crusade for Champions League qualification will be their upcoming clash against Fulham. The Cottagers are in the bottom half of the table and haven't been in the best of form this season.

Bruno Fernandes

So, there is no doubt that United should come out of the other side of the game victorious. However, in regard to the way they'll line up, that remains a mystery, particularly with the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw set to be absent.

One player from the Red Devils' squad who could be left out of the starting XI – not because of an injury issue – is that of Casemiro, with the Brazilian having proven something of a liability of late.

Casemiro's recent performances

Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid in 2022 for a fee worth a reported £70m. Since arriving in Manchester, his form has certainly varied, with it hard to ascertain whether he should remain at the club beyond the end of the season.

For example, in the team's latest clash against Luton Town, in which United won 2-1, the Brazil international was withdrawn at half-time after picking up an early yellow card.

As per Sofascore, against the Hatters, the 32-year-old only managed to win two duels out of nine attempted and even lost possession seven times. When these statistics are compared to Kobbie Mainoo's, it puts into perspective how poorly the more experienced asset played.

Throughout the game, Mainoo, by contrast, won a total of six duels out of 15 attempted and lost possession of the ball the same number of times. However, it does need to be taken into account that the youngster played an additional 45 minutes compared to his Brazilian counterpart.

After Casemiro was taken off the pitch on Sunday, Scott McTominay replaced him. After entering the pitch, the Scotland international managed to outperform the 6 foot anchor on all accounts, notably winning more duels (four) and only losing possession a total of four times during his 45 minutes on the pitch.

However, although the United academy graduate is a valid option to replace the Brazil international, across the season he has shown that he is more of an impact sub rather than a starter.

The midfielder has started a fair few games for the Red Devils this season, but, no player has scored more goals than him off the bench (4.) This outlines how important he is in the latter stages of the game and highlights why Ten Hag would be better off unleashing him late on – or perhaps deploying him further forward in the absence of Hojlund.

This begs the question, if Casemiro is getting dropped and McTominay isn't replacing him, who could?

Why Christian Eriksen is the ideal replacement for Casemiro

Described as an "absolute genius" by Statman Dave, Christian Eriksen's style of play is exactly what United need to shore up the centre of the park.

Although the Denmark international has not yet set the footballing world alight following his move to Ten Hag's side, it is hard to say he hasn't made an impact.

Across all competitions this season, the Dane has made a total of 19 appearances and has managed to contribute one goal and two assists, having previously provided 12 goal involvements in 44 games in 2022/23.

Christian Eriksen for Manchester United.

Despite being deployed in more advanced roles this season – while also failing to feature in the last four league outings – Eriksen could offer a more controlled presence ahead of Casemiro due to his range of passing, as he ranks in the top 14% among his European peers for progressive passes per 90.

With United on home turf, and with the youthful presence of Mainoo alongside him, the former Tottenham Hotspur man could be afforded the time and space to dictate the game, with United notably needing greater control after remarkably enjoying less possession than their hosts last weekend.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

It would also allow Ten Hag to change tactical styles in-game if and when needed. For example, if they're seeking a goal, the Dutch tactician could push Eriksen forward and add another forward to their attack.

That tactical flexibility could prove vital as United seek to maintain their winning run, with Eriksen among what could be a handful of changes this afternoon.

West Ham development as Steidten could be swayed to bid for rival player

West Ham United could be swayed into moving for an "exceptional" rival player as technical director Tim Steidten's plans begin to take shape.

Pressure eases on Moyes after back-to-back West Ham wins

A lot of the noise in east London has centered around manager David Moyes and his future, with the Scotsman's contract expiring at the end of this season.

The Hammers began 2024 on a long winless streak, but Moyes has since rectified that poor form, with West Ham winning back-to-back league games for the first time in what feels like an eternity.

Moyes' future is still uncertain at West Ham, but the pressure has somewhat eased on his position. If they can go on an impressive Europa League run, and maintain a solid run of form domestically, perhaps supporters could see the 60-year-old in charge for another campaign or two.

In the meantime, technical director Tim Steidten will also be deciding how best to strengthen the West Ham squad this summer. They're arguably in real need of a striker and new left-winger, so perhaps that is something the German will be looking into.

They've also been linked with Championship stars like Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney in recent weeks, and another position which could require attention soon is the goalkeeping department.

While Alphonse Areola has been solid between the sticks, he's also not getting any younger, with back up Lukasz Fabianski also now 38 and out of contract next year.

West Ham may be tempted to bid for Ramsdale

One interesting upgrade option has been mooted in the press now, and that's out-of-favour Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Indeed, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, West Ham signing Ramsdale could "develop" and the club could be "tempted" to bid.

"I think that West Ham could be an option for Ramsdale," said Jacobs to GiveMeSport. "Even though Areola has had a very good season, he's in his early 30s, Ramsdale is a bit younger, West Ham might be tempted, and there will definitely be some European interest as well, if Ramsdale does choose to move abroad, but his preference is to stay in the Premier League.

"That's why I think that something might develop with West Ham, we'll have to wait and see, of course. 30/31/32 is not necessarily as old compared to a player for a goalkeeper. And that's why West Ham are kind of happy enough with Areola and Fabianski."

Despite being usurped by David Raya, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has still praised the Englishman for his "exceptional" attitude: “He’s been exceptional around the place with the situation. Like everybody,” he said. “We love him more for sure. We have him every day. We know him, we know his character and we are really happy to have him.

“I don’t think I’m the one to answer the question about Aaron Ramsdale’s quality because I’m the one who signed him when everyone else was questioning that decision. So I don’t think I’m the one to answer that question."

Wrexham announce statement of intent by signing League One rival's captain as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's side complete third transfer of the summer

Wrexham have announced the signing of former Charlton captain George Dobson on a free transfer.

Wrexham sign 26-year-old Dobson

Midfielder was expected to join Fehervar

Becomes Wrexham's third summer signingWHAT HAPPENED?

The signing of Dobson represents a major coup for the recently promoted Red Dragons, who had looked to sign the midfielder last summer. Dobson departed Charlton upon the expiration of his contract and had previously signed a pre-contract agreement with Hungarian side Fehervar. However, due to personal circumstances, the two parties agreed to terminate the deal and allow the Englishman to become a free agent, laying his path to north Wales.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Dobson, who had been the captain of Charlton and played 43 times in League One for the Addicks last season, will instantly become a key player in the middle of the park for Wrexham. The Red Dragons may have been promoted from League Two at the first time of asking, but the step up in quality to League One may make back-to-back-to-back promotions trickier. Yet, the signing of Dobson alongside Arthur Okonkwo and Lewis Brunt will give Phil Parkinson's side a real boost that they can compete at the highest echelons of the division.

GettyWHAT DOBSON SAID

On joining the Red Dragons, Dobson told the club: "I'm genuinely delighted. It’s the club in the EFL that everyone wants to come to and when I got the opportunity to join it was exciting.

“When I spoke to the gaffer, and he showed his interest it felt like an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I can't wait to meet all the supporters and hopefully carry on the success of the club and have an enjoyable season."

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

The Wrexham boss was equally delighted to have beaten off competition to sign Dobson, who he managed at Sunderland. He said: "George is a great signing for us. He's developed really well as a player and is someone we have known about for a while.

"He plays with real personality; he is a great character to have in the building and he has captained Charlton before. Leadership quality in the group is so important and George will certainly bring that."

Sheffield Shield previews: Victoria and New South Wales

A look at how defending champions Victoria and the runners up New South Wales are shaping up for the Sheffield Shield

Alex Malcolm and Andrew McGlashan07-Oct-2019VictoriaLast season Champions (League stage: 6 wins, 1 defeats, 3 draws)
Captain Peter Handscomb
Coach Andrew McDonald
2018-19 statsOverviewThe defending champions are well placed to go back-to-back. Last season’s success was built on the phenomenal run-scoring of Marcus Harris at the top of the order and a deep and well-balanced battery of fast bowlers. Harris, who became the first player to pass 1000 runs in a Shield season since 2014-15 and was Player of the Match in the final, did cover an inconsistent top order, but their batting will only be strengthened this season. Will Pucovski is a year older and a year wiser. Nic Maddinson scored three centuries last season despite only batting eight times due to a broken arm and broken finger, and missed the final. Victoria will have some selection headaches with Peter Handscomb, Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell set to be available for at least five of the first six games, barring being called to the Test squad. Victoria are also planning to regularly rotate their bevy of quicks, in Scott Boland, Chris Tremain, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson and Andrew Fekete, as they did last season. But they will also potentially look to introduce young quicks Will Sutherland and Xavier Crone into the rotation. Jon Holland remains a key cog with his left-arm spin while Seb Gotch and Sam Harper will be battling for the wicketkeeping duties. Gotch was excellent last season but Harper has shown tremendous potential in short-form cricket and will push for opportunities.Player to watchPeter Handscomb will be an intriguing player to follow this season. He was in and out of the Test line-up summer due to form and questions about his batting method before becoming a mainstay of the ODI side. He was then squeezed out of the World Cup squad only to be called up to play the semi-final against England on limited preparation. He remains in Australia’s limited-overs plans but his Test prospects should not be discounted. He has two Test hundreds and has been a consistent performer at Shield level for many seasons. Matthew Wade’s reinvention as a Test player on the back of dominating domestic cricket should give Handscomb hope if he piles up scores for Victoria.Young gunAll eyes will be on Will Pucovski in the early part of the season as Australia search for some top-order Test players. The question is rather when, not if, he should be introduced to the Test side. He has all the makings of a Test batsman and joined an illustrious group of Australia greats in scoring a Shield double century before his 21st birthday last year, a group that included Don Bradman and Ricky Ponting. Managing his mental health saw him miss chunks of last season, but he got a taste of the Test squad in February before taking time away. The Australia A tour seemed to go smoothly for him. Much is expected of him this summer.Kurtis Patterson reached another century•Getty ImagesNew South WalesLast season Runners up (League stage: 5 wins, 2 defeats, 3 draws)
Captain Peter Nevill
Coach Phil Jaques
2018-19 statsOverviewA first-innings collapse in the final against Victoria cost them the chance of the title in a summer where both their regular-season defeats had also come at the hands of the eventual champions. A run of four victories in five matches either side of the BBL showed some of their best four-day cricket, harnessed around a potent bowling attack including Trent Copeland, Sean Abbott, Harry Conway and Steve O’Keefe. Some of them will move aside when the Test stars are available, although the full pack of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon may only line up once before the Tests start with Cummins and Hazlewood having an extended rest. However, New South Wales could get a useful number of matches out of David Warner and Steven Smith, who missed last year’s domestic season as part of their bans, will which build a formidable top order. Can they make it count? Last year only one batsman (Kurtis Patterson) averaged over 40 and when the batting failed, notably against Victoria, it tended to do so collectively so they ideally need greater output from one or two others as well as hoping Warner and Smith fill their boots. There is another interesting factor in the New South Wales’ home campaign this summer with more matches scheduled at the SCG. The nature of the wicket will be important when it comes to the chances of forcing results.Player to watchIt didn’t turn into the off-season Kurtis Patterson would have hoped for after scoring his maiden Test century against Sri Lanka. He missed the cut for the Ashes squad having not stood out on the Australia A tour so starts this season again needing a strong run to restate a claim to the middle order. A string of form similar to his mid-season high last year, which brought four centuries in five innings during January and February, would certainly make an impression on the selectors.Young gunJason Sangha is still only 19 so has plenty of time on his side. There was a lot of chatter when he scored his maiden Sheffield Shield hundred against Tasmania (in the same innings as fellow teenage Jack Edwards) but he couldn’t build on that and didn’t pass fifty again, finishing with an average of 21.44 having played all 11 matches. Has been working on his legspin in the off-season which will add to his all-round package.

Lethargic Harry Kane risks becoming England's version of Cristiano Ronaldo – his place in Gareth Southgate's line up shouldn't be assured for Euro 2024 semi-final

The Three Lions sneaked past Switzerland in spite of their static all-time top scorer and must avoid making the same mistake as Portugal

The English media love to kick a man when he's down and after Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal were knocked out of Euro 2024 on Friday, there was a feeding frenzy. And with good reason.

What should have been a mouth-watering contest between two of the best sides on the continent, if not the world, descended into the Cristiano Ronaldo show, just like Portugal's last-16 tie with Slovenia.

'Ronaldo looked lost in his own reverie' wrote A galactic battle lost in the black hole of one man’s ego,' was the take from . 'Cristiano Ronaldo should retire from Portugal duty for his own good,' wrote , claiming the striker was 'threatening his own legacy by not knowing when to stop'.

Portugal in the end paid the price for trying to accommodate a captain way past the peak of his powers, and a squad brimming with world-class talent was left at the mercy of a penalty shootout.

But less than 24 hours later, England almost succumbed to the same fate, showing blind faith in Harry Kane against Switzerland despite the clear evidence in front of them that he was holding them back.

Getty Dragging their teams down

Kane and Ronaldo might be contrasting characters in many ways, with the England striker appearing to be a far more humble figure than the towering ego of his Portuguese counterpart.

But there are also some obvious similarities between them. They both captain their national teams and are their countries' all-time top scorers. They have each won the Golden Boot at a major tournament and have taken their team to the final of a Euros. Their place in their nation's hall of fame is already secured.

However, they have been dragging their teams down at this tournament. And despite the clear signs of decline, both their managers have insisted on keeping them in their line-ups and on the pitch as long as possible, compromising their team's overall performances as a result.

AdvertisementGetty Images'Lazy and annoying'

And yet, there was little mention of Kane's negative impact on the team in the write ups after England overcame Switzerland on penalties, after he had finally been taken off by Southgate. Only one pundit was prepared to draw a comparison between the lumbering striker and Ronaldo.

Step forward Jamie O'Hara, the former Tottenham midfielder turned agitator-in-chief for radio.

"He doesn't look fit, he's being lazy. He's really annoying me," O'Hara said. "I'm worried that we've got a Ronaldo in the team, and that we have to play him. He's a problem in this tournament, he really is, he's been miles off it. He just slows the game down."

O'Hara urged Gareth Southgate to drop Kane for the semi-final against the Netherlands, shocking his fellow presenter Jason Cundy. The former Chelsea player pointed out that dropping the captain for the semi would be "enormous" and could land Southgate "in massive trouble" if England were eliminated by the Dutch.

Getty 'Massive call'

Cundy, however, could not defend Kane's performance against Switzerland.

"Harry Kane's performance today was way off it, he offered nothing," Cundy said. "When Saka hits the byline, you're looking for Kane to get beyond [his marker] – he was on the penalty spot! You want him to get on the six-yard box. Two or three times it happened, Kane is on his heels, I don't know what it is, I'm not sure how fit he is."

Cundy inadvertently summed up the problem by comparing Southgate's dilemma with Kane to the one Martinez faced. He added: "That's a big call, that's like Martinez dropping Ronaldo last night. But imagine he didn't play him and they go out, people would say, 'Why you dropping Ronaldo?' That's a toughy, there ain't no right answer there, because I understand the question you've asked, and I agree with you, Kane is off it.

"That's a massive call, and I'm not sure right now it's the right one to make, because you've then made a statement. If you drop him in the semi-final, and you get to the final, do your start him in the final? Your skipper? That's a tough answer."

Getty Martinez's biggest mistake

But now they are out, Portugal surely wish that Martinez had the courage to drop Ronaldo from the starting line-up against France. Or at the very least take him off and replace him with Diogo Jota or Goncalo Ramos during the game.

Ronaldo lacked the pace and power to get on the end of crosses or to get ahead of a defender and was always screaming for the ball to be played to his feet as he did not have the legs to latch on to through balls. He also insisted on taking almost every free-kick Portugal were awarded and going for goal each time, never mind how ridiculous the angle was.

But the 39-year-old was actually more involved in his quarter-final than Kane was. He had 41 touches compared to the England captain's 27. He had three shots to Kane's two and at least managed to test the opposing goalkeeper, unlike his English counterpart, who had one shot blocked and missed the target with the other. Ronaldo also completed double the amount of passes of Kane, who made just 10.

Alasdair Gold predicts Richarlison boost before Tottenham face Aston Villa

Tottenham face-off against top four rivals Aston Villa this weekend, in what will be an all-important game to determine which of the pair goes on to play Champions League football next season.

Richarlison injury worry ahead of Aston Villa

Spurs' clash against Unai Emery's side is arguably manager Ange Postecoglou's most crucial game of the season to date, but star striker Richarlison is currently a doubt.

Tottenham laying groundwork to sign marquee striker with Paratici contacts

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 6, 2024

The former Everton star, who endured a slow start to his Spurs career under Antonio Conte, is now one of the success stories of Postecoglou's early reign – even if Spurs are still said to want a new striker this summer.

Indeed, Richarlison boasts nine goals in his last 10 league games for the Lilywhites, prior to picking up a knee injury after the 2-1 loss to Wolves recently.

It's an unfortunate bit of timing for the Brazilian, who was coming into his own and taking Harry Kane's mantle with real aplomb, so it will now be interesting to see when he could return to action for Tottenham.

There have been some discrepancies as to when Richarlison could be back available, as reliable journalist Alasdair Gold now points out on an episode of the ‘Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham’ podcast (via TBR).

Gold suggests Richarlison could be back for Villa

Indeed, speaking on the podcast, Gold predicts that Richarlison could be back to face Aston Villa.

“I’m intrigued to see when he comes back from his injury, because that was one of the big things from the weekend as well," said Gold.

“Every single person involved was telling us something completely different. Postecoglou told us three to four weeks in the press conference ahead of the game, Richarlison’s knee injury was going to keep him out.

“Then he told, he did a Spurs club interview which went out just, we saw it after the press conference had finished, in that he said two to three weeks. Then the Brazil manager later that day picked Richarlison in his Brazil squad and said he’ll be back next week.

dream-richarlison-tottenham-list

“Then Richarlison said after the game to a Brazilian journalist from ESPN, ‘Oh I’m pretty much back in training now I’ll be back hopefully next week’ – which he’s then apparently told this Fred guy as well I think.

“I wouldn’t be stunned if we saw Richarlison on the bench at Villa Park, I don’t think that’s out of this world by the way people are talking. But then again we’ve also had a lot of players who think they are way further ahead than they are – often with international duty coming up as well to kind of prove a point.”

If the 26-year-old is featured on Postecoglou's bench, or even starting XI, it would be a good bit of news for Champions League-chasing Spurs.

Kumar Sangakkara, who was in the SL bus during the 2009 attack, could tour Pakistan again

If the MCC decide to send a touring team to Pakistan, he could be a part of it since he is its president

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2019Kumar Sangakkara could return to Pakistan for the first time since the Lahore attacks 10 years ago, this time as MCC president. Sangakkara was part of the Sri Lanka touring team that was attacked by terrorists on the way to Gaddafi stadium for the third day’s play in March 2009, an attack that effectively spelt the end of international cricket being played in the country. He has not made a public return since but in his new role as MCC president, he could do if the MCC decide to send a touring team to Pakistan. “Yes, if the opportunity arises and the tour definitely goes ahead I would be part of it for sure,” Sangakkara told ESPNcricinfo.Sangakkara was not only on the bus that was attacked on the way from the team hotel, but he was injured by shrapnel in the process – one of six players injured. He has since spoken with some humour about the attack and has said, before becoming MCC President, that the decision to tour Pakistan should be down to the individual. No side toured Pakistan for the next six years, until Zimbabwe broke that drought by playing a limited overs series in May 2015. Since then there has been a gradual increase in the number of high-profile and international games in the country. A World XI played a T20I series in 2017; West Indies did likewise in 2018. The PSL has held its final games in Pakistan over the last two seasons and the PCB wants to play much of the league in the country this season.Spot the former cricketer (and maybe some future ones too)•Getty ImagesMost recently, Sri Lanka – who also played a solitary T20I in Lahore in 2017 – played six international games in Lahore and Karachi, the longest visit by an international side in this last decade. That was a side shorn of a number of leading players but potentially, Sri Lanka could also be playing at least one Test in Pakistan in DecemberAt this stage, a tour by the MCC is far from confirmed, but feedback from Sri Lanka’s visit has been good.”It’s great to see Sri Lanka tour Pakistan and the feedback that it was such a great tour, it was lovely, the players really enjoyed it,” Sangakkara said. “The security was very, very tight and they provided every single facility for the Sri Lanka team. The MCC has been discussing an MCC tour to Pakistan as well, Wasim Khan [PCB CEO] has been with us in many presentations at the World Cricket Committee and presenting us with various plans in terms of security and otherwise as to how that tour can go ahead.”So there is a lot of positive chat and conversation around it and if they can manage that, that will be exceptional. I mean Pakistan is doing a huge amount of work to ensure that it is a safe place for countries to tour. I’m sure slowly but surely cricket will go back to Pakistan and players from Pak will be able to play in front of their home crowd.”

Nottingham Forest’s 6/10 star now needs to be benched

Despite leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to a well-taken finish from Chris Wood, Nottingham Forest failed to kill off the game away to Luton Town on Saturday afternoon, with Luke Berry firing home an 89th-minute equaliser to give Rob Edwards' side a valuable point.

The point, which was the Reds' first since the 2-0 win over West Ham United on February 17th, keeps them three points clear of the Hatters and moves them level on points with Sean Dyche's Everton.

After a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats, the draw at Kenilworth Road could be a valuable one by the end of the campaign.

However, the Tricky Trees could have come away with a rare away win had they finished clear-cut chances – a real theme of Forest's campaign so far.

Murillo

Players such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo impressed once more, but one Forest player failed to make an impact on the game, in what was his first start in 2024.

Ibrahim Sangare's performance v Luton in numbers

After featuring for the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations, Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangare was absent for multiple months and subsequently made his first start of the calendar year during yesterday's draw.

However, the 26-year-old failed to make a positive impact on the game, with the former PSV midfielder looking rusty and out of sorts for large spells during the encounter.

Sangare was dribbled past four times during his 90 minutes on the pitch, also losing nine duels with the Ivorian failing to make his mark and hold down the midfield for Nuno Espírito Santo's side.

The midfielder was just as poor in possession, completing just 17 passes and failing to complete a single dribble as he failed to create opportunities after regaining possession.

Many fans may well have been calling for Sangare to be introduced to the starting lineup. However, his display yesterday was one to forget, with the midfielder failing to take the opportunity with both hands.

His display at Kenilworth Road saw Nottinghamshire Live Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson give the 26-year-old a measly 6/10 rating – not what you'd expect from a player who cost the club £35m last summer.

The man to replace Sangare after the international break

The Reds now have a two-week break before taking on Crystal Palace at the City Ground, in what is yet another huge game as the club looks to cement their Premier League status.

However, after his latest display, Sangare should drop to the bench, with Argentinian Nicolas Dominguez more than deserving of a recall.

When comparing the two in the Premier League this season, Dominguez blows Sangare out of the water in multiple key areas in and out of possession.

The former Bologna midfielder averages four tackles won per 90 in the league this season, a tally that beats Sangare by 0.5 per game – with ball-winning one of Sangare's best qualities.

In possession, the gap between the two is astronomical, with Dominguez completing 84% of passes attempted all campaign, with Sangare trailing the Argentinian with his tally of 80%.

Dominguez's box-to-box nature sees him make more forward passes, as demonstrated in his tally of five per game, 1.1 more than the Ivorian who usually likes to regain possession before laying the ball off, allowing others to progress the play.

Sangare joined the City Ground side with a huge reputation and a lot of hype, but he's not being utilised in his natural 'number six' role, with his game suffering as a result. Nuno could be the man to unlock his abilities, but unfortunately, the Forest faithful are yet to see the towering gem at his best.

The evergreen Modric will continue to grace the Bernabeu for at least one more season. The Croatian's contract was due to expire at the end of June, but a new deal has been reached that will see him remain in Spain long after turning 39.

Modric has taken a backseat at Madrid in recent seasons, due in part to the emergence of Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham. He started just 18 games as Real cruised to another La Liga title.

Yet Modric is clearly fine with this diminished role as Real's incredible knack for acquiring and developing central midfielders has left them in a position to continue to compete for trophies.

MODRIC'S NEW CONTRACT

Real Madrid said in a statement: "Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modrić have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who will be linked to the club until 30 June 2025.

"Modrić arrived at Real Madrid in 2012, and in his twelve seasons representing our shirt he has become a Real Madrid and world football legend."
