Man Utd submit bid for “special” star who’s like Scholes & Keane

Manchester United have had plenty of struggles over the past decade, with their lack of a dominant midfield being one of the biggest.

During the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson, the midfield laid the foundations for success, with Roy Keane and Paul Scholes very much at the heart of it.

The duo are regarded as two of the best midfielders to have graced the Premier League, and together, they were formidable, winning 191 matches over 322 that they played alongside each other.

Therefore, the prospect of Sir Jim Ratcliffe signing a player who’s like Keane and Scholes rolled into one must be extremely exciting.

Man Utd’s search for a new midfielder

As per a report from Portuguese outlet Record, via The Faithful MUFC, Man United are looking to secure their first signing of the summer, Joao Neves.

It’s reported that the Red Devils have already made a £51m bid for the talented midfielder; however, it’s unfortunately been rejected already.

Benfica midfielder Joao Neves.

Benfica are holding out for around the £85m mark for their star prospect, as he has a release clause of £102m.

However, United will have to beat the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea in order to sign Neves.

How Neves compares to Scholes and Keane

Since breaking into the first team at Benfica during the 2022/23 season, Neves truly cemented himself as an incredible prospect last campaign.

The talented Portuguese featured in 55 matches across all competitions, including six times in the Champions League and the Europa League.

Over these appearances, he’s scored three goals and provided two assists, but serving as a creative outlet and a goalscoring threat isn’t his main instruction.

Neves’ role in Benfica’s side is to play in a double pivot of a 4-2-3-1 formation, where he’s expected to control the game while also providing support defensively.

As you can see from the table above – which takes statistics from Keane's 1994 World Cup campaign and Scholes' exploits at the 2002 World Cup – Neves has plenty of similarities to both United legends, especially when comparing the numbers.

Firstly, Neves is an extremely technical player who knows exactly how to control a game, often dropping deeper to progress play while rarely losing possession, as shown by his passes completed, touches, and pass accuracy.

This is certainly similar to Scholes, who was also a master with the ball at his feet. Football analyst Ben Mattinson also stated that there are similarities between the two in terms of adding “technical ability to their midfield, help improve their build-up & become a key player to lead them.”

However, what makes Neves so "special,” as further dubbed by Mattinson, is the fact that he’s also extremely dominant from an out-of-possession perspective, and his defensive stats back that up.

This is where his Keane-like attributes come into the picture, due to his tenacious and relentless approach that has made him be labelled as a “warrior" by scout Jacek Kulig, which we all know the Irishman was, as shown by the clip below.

Just like the Irish icon, Neves can cover ground with ease, and he also has the hunger to win with a slight aggression, as highlighted by the duo’s duels won per game.

When combining all of his qualities, it’s clear to see that Neves plays in a similar way to both Scholes and Keane, and despite his insane fee, a player with such class must be signed.

Tottenham now tempted to bid for £28m forward who Kane said "trains hard"

Tottenham are now tempted to bid for a £28 million forward who Harry Kane said "trains hard" behind-the-scenes, as manager Ange Postecoglou and co look to add more firepower.

Spurs looking to sign a new striker this summer

The transfer window is now officially open, and one of Spurs' key goals over the next few months is bringing in a prolific new striker who can take Kane's mantle.

The north Londoners coped well in Postecoglou's debut season without Kane. The majority of their goals came from Son Heung-min, who was deployed both as a central striker and wide player over the 2023/2024 season, and Brazil international Richarlison.

The attacking duo racked up 29 goals between them in all competitions last term, replicating the kind of return which is standard for Kane, but it is believed that Postecoglou doesn't wish to rely on Richarlison and Son for Tottenham's output again next season.

Spurs are apparently open to offers for Richarlison, with the ex-Everton star attracting interest in Saudi Arabia, while Son is on the wrong side of 30 and has entered the final 12 months of his contract at N17.

Tottenham are believed to have been targeting a host of forward options in the last fortnight alone. Sevilla star Youssef En-Nesyri is apparently on Spurs' radar, coming after he scored 20 goals in all competitions for the La Liga side last campaign.

Meanwhile, closer to home, the likes of Brentford striker Ivan Toney have been linked as well. Football Transfers claimed last week that Spurs are prepared to bid £40 million for Toney, and are also readying a personal terms package for the Englishman.

Tottenham now tempted to bid for Tammy Abraham

It is still very early days in the window, though, so the Lilywhites will be doing their due-diligence on a number of targets.

One name to have emerged on their shortlist, according to The Boot Room, is former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham. The Roma forward could depart for just under £30 million, as the Serie A side set a £28 million price tag.

Lorenzo Pellegrini has called him "vital" for the group at Roma, and he scored 17 goals in all competitions during his best season there in 21/22. Tottenham are apparently tempted to bid for Toney after hearing he's valued at £28m, with Kane also being a huge fan of the 26-year-old.

Tammy Abraham

“I think that Tammy is a great player,” said Kane on Abraham's quality in 2022. “He’s had a fantastic season at club level, he’s still learning and has experience to gain but every time he comes here he works hard and trains hard.

“He wants to impress the manager, he wants to score goals and of course it’s great to have competition in every position and in the Premier League we have some great English strikers who are scoring goals on a regular basis.

“Tammy is doing that for Roma as well so he’s a great player and I’m sure he’ll want to keep improving, keep working hard and that’s what he’ll try and do in this camp and going back to club level as well.”

The latest ‘Galactico’ addition at Santiago Bernabeu has not been called upon by his country for the latest round of UEFA Nations League fixtures. Eyebrows have been raised there as Mbappe figured for Real in their 2-0 win over Villarreal prior to the October international break despite apparently nursing a knock.

There have been suggestions that the Blancos are influencing decisions made by international coaches, with Mbappe facing criticism for supposedly turning his back on France when he is – as captain of Les Bleus – in a position where he could compete.

WHAT DESCHAMPS SAID

Deschamps insists that the decision not to select Mbappe was entirely his, telling reporters ahead of a meeting with Israel on Thursday: “Mbappe was not fit against Villarreal. There was no request. The decision is mine. He played the Villarreal game without being 100 per cent fit.”

Deschamps added when pointing out that picking players that are not in peak physical does nobody any favours, with lucrative contracts needing to be taken into account: “Is this good for the player and for the French team? I don’t think so. It is not the federations who pay the players. It is not just the case of Real Madrid and Kylian.”

Tom Blundell out in bizarre manner in Plunket Shield fixture

Wellington batsman given out obstructing the field under the new laws

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2020New Zealand and Wellington batsman Tom Blundell added his name to the list of unusual dismissals when he was given out obstructing the field on the final day of the Plunket Shield match against Otago at the Basin Reserve. In the second over of the day, which had been delayed until very late by bad weather, Blundell, who was on 101, played a ball from Jacob Duffy down by his feet in the crease and it bounced up. Sensing the stumps could be in danger, Blundell first attempted to kick the ball away – which is legal to defend the wickets – but having not deflected the ball he then tapped it with his glove. The bowler and all the nearby Otago fielders – many of who were sporting beanies against the cold – immediately appealed and Blundell was given out. Until 2017, Blundell would have been out handled the ball but a change in the Laws brought that mode of dismissal under obstructing the field.Blundell will open the batting in the Test series against West Indies next month following his success since taking the role on the tour of Australia last year. After replacing Jeet Raval for the Boxing Day Test, he scored 121 in the second innings – his second Test century follow his debut ton against West Indies in 2017 when he played as the wicketkeeper.Blundell began the domestic season as wicketkeeper and opening batsman for Wellington but having made four low scores the change was made to play as a specialist batsman.

Chelsea will now sell ace who’s worth even more than Mudyrk & Estevao

Chelsea have already been the most active Premier League club in the transfer market this summer, without doubt.

Todd Boehly is keen to have incredible depth across his entire squad, and one position that certainly has reinforcements is the winger role.

Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke, and Mykhaylo Mudryk are just a few, while Estevao Willian will join that list next year.

Nonetheless, let’s take a look at a Chelsea player who will likely leave the club this summer, despite being worth more than Mudryk and Estevao.

Armando Broja is set to depart from Stamford Bridge

According to a report from The Athletic, Chelsea are now set to sell Armando Broja after the exit of Ian Maatsen.

The Blues centre forward no longer has a future at the club, and with Chelsea looking to sign a centre forward, they will look to raise funds via the Albanian’s sale.

Armando Broja celebrating a goal for Chelsea.

It’s said that despite valuing him at £50m recently, they will now ask for a reduced sum instead in order to help get any deal over the line.

Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and other European clubs are all in the race for the 22-year-old, which should give Boehly confidence that he can secure a sale.

Armando Broja’s current value in 2024

Last season, the "dangerous" Broja, as labelled by football scout Jacek Kulig, was handed the opportunity to cement himself as an important player by Mauricio Pochettino, as he stayed at the club past the summer.

The physical centre forward played 13 times between the start of the season and January for the Blues, scoring one goal in the process, which was against Fulham.

Funnily enough, that was the club he then joined on a loan deal until the end of the season, but unfortunately, his game time was extremely limited due to the form of Rodrigo Muniz.

This meant that over the entire season, Broja made just 21 league appearances, boasting a record of one goal and one assist, so it’s no surprise to see that Chelsea want to move him on.

Marc Cucurella

£21m

Nevertheless, as you can see from the table above, Broja is now estimated to be worth £35m by Chelsea, which is a £15m decrease from their original asking price.

Therefore, as of right now, he’s valued even higher than Mudryk, who was only bought in January of 2022 for a huge £89m.

On top of that, his sale would fund the entirety of the initial fee that Chelsea spent on securing Estevao, which was £29m according to Fabrizio Romano.

Furthermore, Broja is also estimated to be worth more than the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Marc Cucurella, and Malo Gusto, who all featured much more heavily for Chelsea last season.

Chelsea forward Armando Broja.

It’s fair to say that if the Blues can get anywhere near that asking price for Broja, then they must snap up the offer immediately.

Furthermore, considering that Chelsea are wanting to sign a new striker, Broja hasn’t developed quite as much as initially anticipated, and as his contract lasts until 2028, this summer provides the perfect opportunity to sell him.

Mullin needed just 16 seconds to fire Wrexham ahead at the New York Stadium. Wrexham's talisman fired home a cross by Ryan Barnett to give the visitors the perfect start. An entertaining first half saw Rotherham press hard for an equaliser but they were denied by some solid Wrexham defending. Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo saved from Joe Rafferty and Christ Tiehi and then did brilliantly to keep out a Joe Powell free-kick that took a flick off a Wrexham head.

More chances flowed after the break with James McClean going close for the visitors and Mullin testing Cameron Dawson in the Rotherham goal. Yet Mallik Wilks was causing Wrexham problems and forced Okonkwo to turn a shot behind. The Wrexham stopper also denied Cohen Bramall late on to preserve his clean sheet and ensure the Welsh side head back home with all three points.

Mullin took over from the injured Jack Marriott and needed just 16 seconds to bag his first League One goal of the season for Wrexham. It was a decent effort from Mullin too. Barnett teased his defender out wide on the right before sending in a cross, with Mullin nipping in front of his marker and volleying home. The striker's only other goal this season came in the EFL Trophy win over Salford City but he's now off the mark in the league for the Red Dragons.

THE BIG LOSER

Rotherham's fans had a tough afternoon after seeing their side beaten at home by Wrexham. Supporters were quick to voice their frustration at the match officials and ended up being outsung by the 2,356 visiting fans. Rotherham also had to see former player Ollie Rathbone come on as a substitute for Wrexham as he faced his former club for the first time since his summer departure.

Chris Lynn, Dan Lawrence and Brisbane Heat fined for Covid-19 breach

The pair came in close contact with the public and caught a taxi which breaks CA’s protocols for the BBL hub

Alex Malcolm15-Dec-2020Cricket Australia has handed down major fines to the Brisbane Heat, Chris Lynn, and Dan Lawrence for breaching Covid-19 protocols in Canberra on Saturday night. The breach relates to Lynn and Lawrence socialising together in public. Players are permitted to dine in public, provided they are sitting outside but they are not permitted to have contact with the public. However, the pair sat inside without masks, stopped for a selfie with a fan, and caught a taxi back to the hotel which contravened the rules. It is the first significant breach of CA hub protocols this season.Brisbane Heat have been fined A$50,000, with A$20,000 suspended for the remainder of the BBL season for breaching CA’s Covid-19 directive to BBL teams.Lynn and Lawrence have each been charged under section 2.23 of the Cricket Australia code of conduct, relating to conduct that “(c) is or could be harmful to the interests of cricket or (d) does or could bring the game of cricket into disrepute.”Both players have accepted a A$10,000 fine, with A$4,000 suspended for the remainder of the BBL season.CA’s head of integrity and security Sean Carroll said that while the breach was minor, the protocols could not be compromised.”Medically, this particular breach was lower risk, but actions of this kind have the potential to compromise the integrity of and confidence in our bio-security protocols,” he said.”Potential Covid-19 hotspots and related impacts on State borders remain a challenge for the league and it is imperative that all protocols are adhered to, giving us the best opportunity to move around the country and execute the full schedule.””While Australia’s current Covid-19 infection rate remains low, we must ensure that appropriate measures are taken to reduce the possibility of any player, staff member, or official being connected to a declared hot spot. State/Territory Governments enforced isolation and restrictions for crossing borders for declared hot spots may impact the individuals involved, the team and potentially jeopardise the BBL season.”Lynn issued an apology on behalf of him and Lawrence. “I would like to say sorry to my team-mates, the club, and the Heat fans for being careless and not observing the protocols that were put in place to ensure the continuity of the competition.”Having a photo with a fan at a licensed venue and travelling in a taxi seem pretty low risk but they were identified in our briefings as examples of things you couldn’t do.”I was probably lulled into a false sense of security that because everything has been improving around the country, we were getting closer to normal behaviour.”But the rules, including avoiding close contact, are there to protect the BBL competition and all the players and teams and I do apologise sincerely to everyone for jeopardising that. I can speak on behalf of Dan as well to say that we were are both very regretful at making such a mistake in judgment.”I appreciate all the efforts that went into enabling Dan and I to play last night and will ensure this doesn’t happen again.”Both Lynn and Lawrence have tested negative for Covid-19 since their breach was discovered and were permitted to play in Monday night’s game against the Sydney Thunder. They had to prepare separately from the rest of the two teams and not take part in any close huddles or celebrations over the course of the game, as they were for the time being considered to be outside the strict bio-secure hub all BBL players are meant to be cocooned within for the balance of the tournament. Both players did their best to follow those rules during the match although it was difficult to achieve at times.

Imagine him & McNeill: Sheffield Wednesday could sign "magic" winger

Sheffield Wednesday have now finally confirmed the capture of former Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill, with that free transfer purchase going down as the club's eighth purchase of a busy transfer window already.

Danny Rohl and Co will want to sign even more top talents ahead of the new Championship season kicking off though, knowing they don't want to be anywhere near the relegation zone again next campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

The popular German boss occupying the Hillsborough hot seat could turn to a familiar face to partner McNeill in South Yorkshire, therefore, in another shrewd free agent swoop.

Sheffield Wednesday going back in for former loanee

Sheffield Star report that despite McNeill signing, it doesn't mean a deal for Ike Ugbo to return is dead in the water, with the former Wednesday loanee rumoured to be returning on a permanent deal.

Yet, if Ugbo is still being eyed up by the Owls, this could well mean there's a possibility that Wednesday are still keen to bring back Ian Poveda. Journalist Darren Witcoop speculated in June that Rohl and Co did want the South American winger to come back.

What Poveda could offer Wednesday

McNeill would love to play alongside both of these gems if even more deals can get done this window, with Poveda potentially even partnering the 20-year-old down the right flank if signed, feeding the youthful goal machine with a whole host of chances in the process.

Wednesday supporters will be purring at the idea of the Colombian winger returning also, but he is being watched by the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Luton Town and Cardiff as well reportedly.

Leeds forward Ian Poveda.

Those packed into Hillsborough last campaign saw glimpses of his immense ability in the midst of a tense relegation battle, before Poveda found himself on the sidelines towards the back end of his short loan stint from Leeds United.

The enigmatic South American forward would only manage to line up for the Owls ten times in total last season, but one standout display against Plymouth Argyle to start March certainly caught the attention of fans of the South Yorkshire side.

During the slender 1-0 victory, Poveda would end up completing three successful dribbles as an attacking option constantly wanting to bomb forward, alongside winning seven duels and firing three efforts on the Pilgrims' goal to further reinforce this livewire tag.

Lining up seven times for Leeds too, before being released, the numbers from the table above will make for some initial encouraging reading, especially if Poveda can kick into gear and star over a full campaign for Wednesday.

In contrast, Anthony Musaba – who ended up being a solid starter under Rohl down the right flank – won less total duels on average last season at 2.9 won per game, with Poveda's tenacity and bite down the wings potentially attractive to the German.

Daniel Farke even suggested that Poveda possesses a "touch of magic" when things weren't all going his way at Elland Road, with the 24-year-old being gifted some rare appearances for the Whites as a result.

Formerly a star at youth level for Leeds and Manchester City, Poveda will understand the struggles McNeill has also faced in senior football to date, which has seen the ex-Red Devils youngster only score three senior goals when chucked out on loan.

Ian Poveda in action for Leeds United.

Yet, the South American – who is tricky and creative – could be exactly what McNeill needs to find his goalscoring edge at Wednesday.

The youngster has scored 46 goals at youth level and together with Poveda, will finally hope to replicate those numbers in his new home.

Nuri Sahin was brought on as Edin Terzic's replacement as Borussia Dortmund boss ahead of the 2024/25 season, having garnered coaching experience while being at the helm for Turkish outfit Antalyaspor. The club legend, who made 274 appearances for BVB during two different spells at the club, has not gotten off to a great start, though.

Dortmund reached the Champions League final last season, which they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid and it seemed like Terzic had laid the foundation for a great BVB side to emerge. Unfortunately, the team has been on a decline under Sahin in 2024-25 and the recent second-round shock exit at the hands of Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal has only further exacerbated the situation.

WHAT SEBASTIAN KEHL SAID

Amid growing pressure, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has come out in public to extend his support to the under-fire Sahin. Following the 1-0 extra time loss to Wolfsburg in the Cup, Kehl told the reporters (h/t CNA): "It is clear that we are not satisfied with the overall situation of our results. But we have to stick together and work hard on things. We are lagging behind in our goals. But we will go through it together. This is a situation that Dortmund has handled successfully in the past."
