Lahore Qalandars flex PSL title-contender muscles to end Multan Sultans winning streak

Fakhar Zaman’s 37-ball 60 sets up unassailable target as league leaders lose for first time

Danyal Rasool11-Feb-2022
It took seven matches and two venues to get there, but Multan Sultans have finally lost a game. It came against the home favourites Lahore Qalandars in an impressively clinical performance from Shaheen Afridi’s side, who, after posting 182, saw off the defending champions by 52 runs with consummate ease.In what was a team effort by Qalandars’ bowlers, Sultans were denied the ability to get off to the fast start they rely on so much for their dominance. They managed just 38 in the first six overs and, as the asking rate climbed, Rashid Khan broke open the game with wickets off successive balls. Regular wickets continued to fall, and while Sultans, Khushdil Shah in particular, continued to go hard at the target, Mohammad Rizwan’s side fell some way short.Sultans, who had already qualified for the knockouts, opted to chase after winning the toss despite recent success defending scores. Anwar Ali got Abdullah Shafique in the first over, but it was Fakhar Zaman Sultans needed to worry about. In a somewhat lacklustre bowling display in the powerplay, Qalandars were allowed to pile on the runs, picking off wayward deliveries as they went. Blessing Muzarabani, Sultans’ hero 24 hours ago, couldn’t quite find the same accuracy here, either at the top or tail of the innings, ending up conceding 48 in his four.Fakhar’s 37-ball 60 aside, it didn’t seem as if Sultans were falling too far behind in the game. Imran Tahir and Khushdil kept Qalandars honest with spin through the middle, while Abbas Afridi was sensational with his variations. By the 14-over mark, Qalandars had just 107 on the board, and with Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Ghulam struggling for momentum, Rizwan’s men seemingly had little to worry about. But 76 off the final six overs, aided by less-than-accurate death bowling, helped the home side finish up with a daunting 182. In a season where the pendulum of power has shifted dramatically from the chasers to the defenders, Sultans needed a brisk start. But it was one they were emphatically denied, with Afridi and Haris Rauf keeping things tight with the new ball. Afridi got the big wicket of Shan Masood with a lovely offcutter, while Rashid and David Wiese kept the batters quiet. The Afghan legspinner cleaned up Rizwan for a 27-ball 20 which had been a struggle throughout, but it was Rilee Rossouw’s wicket that got Qalandars believing. He was trapped in front off a flatter ball, with the umpire’s decision upheld on review, and with the asking rate having soared above 11, Sultans had lost a key asset in their chase. Sohaib Maqsood and Tim David were handy for a few boundaries here and there, but they fell in consecutive overs, and Sultans suddenly began to fade.Confidence pumping through their veins, and buoyed on by the biggest crowd of the tournament, Qalandars ripped through Multan’s lower order. They were seeking to post not just two further points on the board, but make a statement every side in the league would be forced to heed. Rauf got rid of Khushdil, who represented the last glimmer of Sultan’s hope before Afridi cleaned up Muzarabani. It was left to emerging player Zaman Khan to pick up the final wicket in a contest from which Qalandars have unquestionably emerged as one of the genuine title contenders this season.

Spurs star who got sold by Poch for big money has become an ’embarrassment’

While they haven’t always had the best of luck when it comes to signing players, Tottenham Hotspur have developed a reputation for being brilliant sellers.

When other Premier League teams lose their best players for low fees or nothing, the Lilywhites have more often than not been able to extract brilliant fees.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

There are numerous examples of the North Londoners being able to get enormous paydays for their wantaway stars, including one who earned them a massive profit but has seen his value collapse in recent years.

Spurs' biggest sales

Before we get to the player in question, let’s examine a few of the most significant sales in Spurs’ history, starting with Gareth Bale.

The Welsh icon joined the Lilywhites from Southampton in 2007, and after a tough start that saw him branded a bad luck charm, he eventually became the best player in the entire squad, if not the league.

The 12/13 campaign was his final and best for the club, as, across 44 games, the Cardiff-born megastar scored 26 goals and provided ten assists, which was unsurprisingly enough to court Real Madrid, who, after a protracted saga, agreed to pay a record £85m for the winger.

A decade later, Daniel Levy was negotiating another icon’s exit. Following 435 games, in which he scored 280 goals and provided 61 assists, it was time for England captain Harry Kane to finally leave N17.

Fortunately, there was still a year remaining on the Englishman’s contract, so when Bayern Munich finally got their man, it cost them an eye-watering £86.4m.

These two sales are undoubtedly Spurs’ most famous, but in the years between them, the club sanctioned another megamoney exit for a player who has seen his value collapse in recent seasons.

The former Spurs ace losing his value

The former Spurs star in question is Kyle Walker, who joined the club from Sheffield United in 2009 for a fee Transfermarkt claim to be in the region of £5m.

The Englishman would go on to become a star for the North Londoners and make 229 appearances for the first team, scoring four goals and providing 18 assists in the process, before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2017 for £50m, which was a record for a defender at the time.

Now, while Mauricio Pochettino would likely have preferred keeping the Sheffield-born star, they did exceptionally well to make £45m of profit on the player, and while the 24-year-old has since enjoyed a trophy-laden career at the Etihad, it’s undoubtedly coming to a close.

For example, this season has seen the vastly experienced defender begin to seriously struggle in games, with his performances against Brighton & Hove Albion and Spurs particularly hard to watch.

In the former, he was constantly beaten for pace and skill by Japanese international Kaoru Mitoma, and in the latter, he was poor for the entire game and humiliated at the very end when Timo Werner beat him to the ball that set up Brennan Johnson’s goal.

It might sound harsh, but it’s an opinion shared by former professional Tony Cascarino, who described the Englishman’s performance as “embarrassing” and claimed that he has “definitely lost half a yard.”

Unsurprisingly, such a dramatic downturn in form has not gone unnoticed by the decision-makers at the club, and based on reports from late last month, they are now willing to sell him for just £15m, or £35m less than they signed him for.

Kyle Walker for Manchester City.

Ultimately, nobody can argue against Walker’s incredible career, but at the same time, it feels impossible to claim that it’s not over and that Spurs did well to make such a massive profit on him when they agreed to sell him in 2017.

Bart Verbruggen, Diogo Costa and six goalkeepers Man City should consider to replace Ederson after yet another costly mistake in Nottingham Forest defeat

The Brazilian has made too many mistakes this season and the Cityzens are already looking for his successor – but who should they turn to?

Manchester City may have spent £180 million ($232m) in January bolstering their squad, but they failed to address one area which was in desperate need of renewal: the position of goalkeeper. City's weakness between the sticks has been a big factor in their woeful season, and it haunted them again on Saturday when Ederson allowed a shot from Callum Hudson-Odoi to creep past his arm and inside his near post in the 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

It was far from the first time the Brazilian has let his side down this season. Ederson made numerous errors in City's dismal Champions League campaign, and his form in the league saw him dropped for Stefan Ortega for the trip to Liverpool in November. He has provided a remarkable three assists this season, making Premier League history as the goalkeeper to have set up the most goals in the process, but overall, he has a net deficit as his play-making ability can no longer compensate for the mistakes he keeps making.

Ederson has been fortunate that his deputy Ortega has had his own problems, and Guardiola could not hide his fury after the German's feeble attempt to keep out Cristian Norgaard's header in the 2-2 draw at Brentford in January.

But City have a double-edged problem now: two goalkeepers who are on the wrong side of 30 and neither of whom Guardiola seems particularly convinced by. Ederson wanted to leave the club last summer, but stayed after Guardiola refused to sanction his departure, and GOAL understands that City have already begun their search for a replacement for the Brazilian.

The Premier League champions are casting their eye around the world looking at suitable candidates, so here are some of the names they should be taking a particularly close look at…

Getty ImagesDiogo Costa (Porto)

Diogo Costa wrote his name into European Championship history last summer by becoming the first goalkeeper to save three consecutive penalties in the shootout win against Slovenia. He already had a fine reputation for keeping out spot-kicks after saving a record three penalties in a row in the Champions League group stage the previous season, and while his shot-stopping ability is, therefore, not in doubt, he also has the ball-playing ability to fit into this City team.

The 25-year-old also has leadership qualities, having been named Porto's captain at the start of this season. Costa was linked with a move to City last summer when Ederson was thought to be heading to Saudi Arabia, while Chelsea wanted to sign him in 2023.

Porto president Andre Villas-Boas called Costa "one of the club's greatest assets" last summer as he declared the No.1 was not for sale. Costa has a release clause of €75m (£63m/£81m), but the penalty-saving extraordinaire would be well worth the big outlay in the long run.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLucas Chevalier (Lille)

Lucas Chevalier shot to prominence after helping Lille pull off a shock 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League in October. He made five saves against the holders, including a stunning starfish leap to deny Antonio Rudiger. Indeed, his performance was so strong that he earned a 9/10 rating from the infamously hard-to-please journalists at , who gave the same mark to Alisson for his world-beating performance against Paris Saint-Germain last week.

Chevalier continued to shine in his side's journey to the last 16, and the Frenchman is reported to be high on City's list of Ederson replacements. They are likely to face competition from Barcelona, who have also set their sights on the 23-year-old as they look for a long-term replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen. But if there's going to be a bidding war between City and the cash-strapped Catalans, there will only be one winner.

GettyMichele di Gregorio (Juventus)

City know all about Michele di Gregorio after he made a sensational save from Ilkay Gundogan in Juventus' 2-0 win over Guardiola's side in December, while Ederson gave an abject display down the other end.

The 27-year-old has taken the long road to the top after coming through Inter's academy. He never played a senior game for the Nerazzuri and had four separate loan spells across Italy's lower leagues before joining Monza permanently in 2022. Di Gregorio subsequently joined Juve on loan last summer, and has shown he can handle the pressure of playing for a top club having helped the Old Lady to the second-best defensive record in Serie A.

Bart Verbruggen provides an appealing mix of confidence on the ball, mega-fast reactions and Premier League experience, and he would make an easy, ready-made replacement for Ederson. The Brighton shot-stopper was linked with Manchester United when they were searching for a David de Gea replacement in 2023 before opting for Andre Onana instead, and how they must regret that decision.

Verbruggen would be an affordable option at around £30m ($38m, and as he is only 22, he could go on to be City's No.1 for the next decade, representing an absolute steal if they can pull it off.

Titans look to extend dream run against low-on-confidence Royal Challengers

Kohli, du Plessis and Maxwell must play a big role in turning Royal Challengers’ fortunes around in what is the first meeting between the two sides

S Sudarshanan29-Apr-2022Big pictureLooking at their team composition after the IPL auction in 2018, Chennai Super Kings were dubbed “Dad’s Army”, few gave them a chance of making the playoffs, let alone winning the title. But that’s just what they went and did. After the mega auction earlier this year, despite having a clean slate to build a team, Gujarat Titans seemed to have messed it up, looking, on paper at least, thin on resources. But eight games down, they have seven wins and sit pretty at the top of the points table.Live in the USA

You can watch the action on ESPN+.

So far, Titans have had a different player starring and winning the Player-of-the-Match award in six of their seven wins. Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, David Miller and Rashid Khan have all played these starring roles, with Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Umran Malik bagging the honour for his five-wicket haul in the previous game despite Titans winning the match. While it makes for pretty reading, Titans would know that they need regular contributions from the top order, too, something that hasn’t happened as consistently.Wriddhiman Saha, who replaced Matthew Wade at the top, gave them a quick start in their tall chase against Sunrisers to set up the game. However, Gill’s blade has gone quiet after the first three matches, where he scored 180 runs at a strike rate of 166.66.With their lower-middle order making up for it, though, Titans will back themselves to beat low-on-confidence Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday.Related

How unfancied Titans have proven their doubters wrong

Kohli's batting currently looks like a human question mark

To say Royal Challengers’ batting is a worry will be an understatement. Despite having names like Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell, their top four have a combined average of 21.9, the second-poorest in the tournament after Kolkata Knight Riders’ 20.9. While Kohli’s form has had opinions from left, right and centre, du Plessis’ dry run has gone a little under the radar, but is equally worrying for the team. Whenever du Plessis scores over 30 in an IPL match, his team wins more often than not and he has passed that mark only twice this season. This has resulted in Maxwell coming in too early for his liking – four times in the powerplay. But against Shami, Ferguson and Rashid, the Royal Challengers trio has a favourable match-up and the team would look to use that as a catalyst for a turn in fortunes.Likely XIsGujarat Titans: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Hardik Pandya (capt), 4 David Miller, 5 Rahul Tewatia, 6 Abhinav Manohar, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Yash DayalRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Faf du Plessis (capt), 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Rajat Patidar, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Shahbaz Ahmed, 6 Suyash Prabhudessai/Mahipal Lomror, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Josh Hazlewood2:10

Bishop: Kohli is central to all of RCB’s batting plans

Strategy punt Ferguson has picked up six wickets in the six overs he has bowled in the powerplay this season, with an early wicket often setting him up for a successful spell in the match. But he is yet to dismiss any of du Plessis, Kohli and Maxwell in T20s. Given all three batters are struggling a bit, it could be time for Ferguson to set the record straight. Conversely, if Maxwell can be there when Rashid comes into the attack, Royal Challengers are likely to benefit. For Maxwell has the best average against spinners this season and hits a boundary every 2.8 balls against them. Moreover, against Rashid, the lone frontline spinner in Titans’ line-up, he averages 68.Stats that matter Rashid has hit seven sixes in 36 balls in this IPL, a six every 5.1 balls. Among batters who have faced at least 30 balls, no one has a better rate. Kohli has the fourth-lowest average (18.28) for any player who has played at least eight innings this season. Five times he has been dismissed in single digits, the joint-most such dismissals in IPL 2022. Pandya will make his 100th IPL appearance while Ferguson will play his 100th T20 match.

Celtic flop who was "surplus to requirements" is now on fire after leaving

Given Celtic’s business model of buying young players at a low cost, providing them a platform on which to perform and ultimately selling them on at a profit, the Hoops experience more squad turnover than most.

Matt O’Riley is a prime example of this transfer strategy, arriving from Milton Keynes Dons for just £1.5m in January 2022, before being sold to Brighton & Hove Albion for £25m last summer, a joint-record sale for a Scottish club, alongside Kieran Tierney’s move to Arsenal in 2019 and Jota who joined Al-Ittihad in 2023.

This merry-go-round has seen plenty of top-quality strikers donning the famous Hoops during the last decade or so, including Moussa Dembele, Odsonne Edouard, Giorgos Giakoumakis and current first-choice centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi to name but a few.

Celtic do often get their recruitment right, particularly at the top end of the park, but this certainly isn’t always the case.

Celtic's worst-ever transfer window?

Following the summer window in 2020, Celtic put out this now infamous “Just sitting there thinking… what a window” tweet, mocking former striker Charlie Nicholas, who had criticised the club’s recruitment, but it turned out he was right.

Of the players pictured, Vasilis Barkas, Shane Duffy and Albian Ajeti were massive flops, Diego Laxalt was underwhelming, David Turnbull was decent, albeit but didn’t live up to his potential, and Mohamed Elyounoussi was sporadically impressive, but without much consistency.

The Hoops’ poor recruitment in 2020 actually extended back to the pre-pandemic January window too, paying £2m for Ismaila Soro’s services from Bnei Yehuda, while Patryk Klimala arrived from Jagiellonia Białystok for £3.5m.

Given that the world shut down and football was suspended mere weeks after his arrival in Glasgow, Klimala made just four appearances, totalling 101 minutes, during his first half-season at Celtic, but there was optimism he could have an impact the following year after an impressive showing in pre-season, most-notably scoring the goal below against Nice.

He then netted on the opening day of the Premiership season as the Bhoys hammered Hamilton Accies 5-1, on target shortly after being introduced as a substitute.

This though, was very much not the start of something, with Klimala scoring just three times in 28 appearances during what proved to be a catastrophic campaign, as Neil Lennon’s team ended up trophyless, finishing a whopping 25 points behind Rangers, with 20/21 still the only campaign since 2010/11 in which Celtic have not been crowned champions.

The Polish striker unceremoniously departed in April 2021, described as “surplus to requirements” by Noel Whelan in Football Insider, sold to New York Red Bulls for $4.8m, with Celtic remarkably getting their money back, despite his unnoteworthy stint in Glasgow, with Klimala becoming something of a globe trotter subsequently.

Former Celtic striker Patryk Klimala.

Patryk Klimala's post-Celtic career

Similar to Celtic, the New York Red Bulls almost certainly regret paying £3.5m for Klimala’s services.

He was actually their top-scorer with eight in 2021, as the New Jersey-based franchise finished 14th in the overall Major League Soccer standings, scoring just 14 goals in 63 appearances overall, losing his starting spot as RBNY improved in 2022.

As a result, the following January, he was sold to Israeli-based club Hapoel Be’er Sheva, scoring a miserly four goals in 23 outings, before his contract was mutually terminated towards the end of 2023 following the escalation of the Israel–Hamas war.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Śląsk Wrocław, back in his native Poland, took a chance on Klimala, but this did not pay off, failing to score in any of his 11 Ekstraklasa appearances for the Militarians, so much so that he was disregarded to their reserve side, who ply their trade in the Polish fourth-tier, unsurprisingly scoring four in four at that level, including a hat-trick against Górnik Polkowice, but this would prove to be just the start of his scoring spree.

In September 2024, Klimala joined A-League side Sydney FC and, despite now plying his trade on the other side of the world, he appears to have found a home.

Now 26 years old, he’s scored seven goals in 11 outings for the Sky Blues, bagging the winner on his A-League debut, which just so happened to be a Sydney derby against Western Sydney Wanderers.

He was on target in another Sydney derby victory in late November too, before continuing his scoring spree in defeat at Central Coast Mariners on Sunday, as the Sky Blues sit sixth in the A-League standings.

As outlined by the table, the striker has flourished at the start of his life Down Under so, while this doesn’t suggest Celtic should have kept hold of him, it does emphasise that just because a player doesn’t work out at one club, or four in this case, it doesn’t mean they won’t thrive at the right level and in the right environment.

Guardiola conceded after the defeat to Villa that his side, who have been champions for the past four seasons running, are now out of the race for the title.

“When you want to achieve something important, like win the Premier League, arrive in the latter stages of the Champions League, how you have to behave is this one concept: consistency. All this time we were incredibly consistent and now we are not,” said the Spaniard.

City want Valladolid starlet

One of City’s biggest problems in recent months has been their propensity to ship goals – which has in part been caused by injuries to a number of key defenders, including Nathan Ake, John Stones and Ruben Dias. Guardiola’s side have kept just three clean sheets all season in the Premier League, and just one in their last eight games.

They’ve also conceded 25 goals already, which is just one fewer than they conceded in the entirety of their 2021/22 title-winning campaign. Amid the crisis, the club are now reportedly eyeing a move for teenage central defender Juma Bah.

The 18-year-old is currently on-loan at La Liga side Real Vallodolid from AIK Freetong in his native Sierra Leone, and has impressed with his assured performances at the heart of the Blanquivioletas’ defence.

The Sun insider Alan Nixon has reported via his exclusive Patreon page that City want to purchase Bah next month, but loan him straight back to Vallodolid so he can continue to play regularly. Nixon claims that City would be willing to pay £12 million for 6 foot 5 defender, who is keen on a move to the Premier League despite there also being interest from Barcelona.

Bah, the first player ever from Sierra Leone to play in the Spanish top flight, has been praised by football analyst Chencho Alonso.

Commenting on Bah after he featured for Vallodolid B versus Langreo earlier this year, Chencho said, per Foot Boom: “He was commanding and pushing forward, showcasing solid defensive concepts in movement and marking adjustments. He is very calm on the ball and plays simply.

“The next day I said he would be called up in September for the first team, and on Saturday he was a starter.”

Mexican football legend Hugo Sánchez slammed Gerardo 'Tata' Martino after the former Mexico coach admitted to ESPN that "maybe he made a mistake" by leaving Santiago Giménez out of the 2022 World Cup.

Sánchez responded sharply: "I will never forgive him for playing against Argentina while leaving the flanks open for Messi, without Edson Álvarez, and without a center forward. It’s a disgrace."

Martino broke his silence about the decisions he made leading up to the 2022 World Cup, including leaving Santiago Giménez out, who was playing in European football with Feyenoord and was in good form. After excluding him from the squad and choosing Rogelio Funes Mori, who only played one match but made no impact, Mexico were eliminated in the Group Stage for the first time since 1978. Following this disastrous result, Martino left his position as coach a few days after the elimination.

Martino would later go on to be the head coach of Inter Miami for one and a half seasons, lifting the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield but crashing out of the playoffs in the first round at the hands of underdogs Atlanta United.

"For disrespecting the National Team and Mexican football with the behaviors they say he had—leaving, not attending to the work he was supposed to do," Sanchez said, adding to his criticisms of Martino.
