'I can't predict anything' – Morgan Rogers makes admission on Aston Villa future after Tottenham identify midfielder as Eberechi Eze alternative

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers has played down talk of an exit this summer despite strong interest from Tottenham and Chelsea. Spurs are eyeing the attacker after losing out on Eberechi Eze to Arsenal. Rogers insists he is happy at Villa and focused only on playing with Unai Emery's side, however, he has kept the potential of a move open amid the speculation.

It was reported earlier on Thursday that Tottenham have identified Rogers as a key alternative to Eze following the Crystal Palace star’s surprise switch to Arsenal. Chelsea are also reportedly keeping tabs on the Villa man after his standout 2024-25 season. Despite the links, Rogers has stressed his priority remains with Villa, where he is under contract until the summer of 2030.

Speaking to , Rogers said: “I’m happy here [Aston Villa]. I love football. I love nothing more than just coming out on the pitch and playing football and that’s what I’m doing. I don’t think about anything else. I can’t predict the next 12 months or anything in the future. It’s just about playing football, enjoying my football and showing everyone what I can do.”

Rogers enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 16 assists in 54 games across all competitions. His performances earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year award earlier this week. With five years left on his current deal, Villa are determined to keep him, while Unai Emery sees him as central to their Champions League push.

Gibbs-White told : "It was a really difficult period for me and my fiancée. Having my second child, but there were a few complications with all of that. I believed in being professional, showing up every day and letting everything else take care of what it needs to do. With everything that happened this summer, it was like it hit home a bit. Man Utd are back in for Emi Martinez! Red Devils make fresh approach for Argentina icon amid Andre Onana & Altay Bayindir frustrations

Manchester United have made a fresh move for Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez with two days of the summer transfer window remaining.

Man Utd eye back-up Martinez dealLammens remains goalkeeper priorityBad news for Onana & BayindirFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , United have been in touch with both Aston VIlla and Martinez himself about a possible Old Trafford switch before Monday's deadline. The Argentina international has started the season with Villa as normal, despite appearing to bid farewell to fans at the end of last season, after it was reported he had decided to leave.

Talks over a deal for Royal Antwerp's Senne Lammens are also still ongoing, Romano adds. But it seems that United are arming themselves against that move potentially collapsing by having an alternative ready to go. This all stems from an apparent dissatisfaction with current goalkeeping options. Andre Onana is yet to feature in the Premier League this season and tellingly returned to the bench following his appearance in the Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town. Altay Bayindir has been getting the nod instead but has struggled to look commanding.

Martinez is the only person to win the Yashin Trophy, part of the Ballon d'Or ceremony, and Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper twice each. He is also the current holder of both awards, having picked up his latest individual accolades in 2024.

AFPWHAT NEXT?

Everything could depend on how United progress with Lammens on Sunday, going into deadline day on Monday. If that deal doesn't appear to be doable, at what point do club officials then give up and switch full focus to Martinez instead? Villa signed former Brest No. 1 Marco Bizot during the summer and the veteran Dutchman deputised when Martinez was suspended on the opening day of the season. They might not therefore be under pressure to source a new starter, which could make it easier to prise Martinez away.

Nat Sciver-Brunt leads England past India despite Renuka Singh five-for

Renuka’s career-best haul and good knocks from Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh fail to prevent England from closing in on semi-final spot

Vishal Dikshit18-Feb-2023England put one foot in the women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals with a last-over win that was set up by crucial knocks from Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amy Jones, which meant Renuka Singh’s career-best 5 for 15 went in a losing cause. Despite being 29 for 3 early on, England kept their foot on the pedal to post a challenging 151 in overcast conditions, which they defended with the help of a spin strangle in the middle overs. The result stretched their unbeaten record against India in T20 World Cups to 6-0.Smriti Mandhana took India deep with her 52, but the asking rate had nearly touched 12 when she got out in the 16th over. From 47 needed off 24, it was 34 off 12, and then 31 off the last over, bowled by Katherine Sciver-Brunt. A no-ball, which Richa Ghosh hit for four, gave India hope, but the task was too steep and India fell short.Renuka Singh picked up three wickets in the powerplay and two more in the final over•AFP/Getty ImagesRenuka Singh rules the powerplayRenuka found prodigious inswing, and was at her accurate best, and pegged England back when she struck in each of her first three overs. Her third ball swung in a long way and took Danni Wyatt’s outside edge for a spectacular one-handed catch for Ghosh, sending Wyatt back for a duck. Alice Capsey then missed with a big swing to be bowled for 3, and Sophia Dunkley made room for a big shot but lost her leg stump for 10. Renuka bowled three overs in a row and had ten dots in her first spell of 3-0-12-3.Another rescue act from Nat Sciver-BruntShe did it a couple of times in the ODI World Cup last year and she did it again on Saturday even if the format was different. Walking in at 10 for 2 in the second over, Nat first rescued and then lifted England with Heather Knight and Jones for company, by hardly letting the scoring rate drop. Knight and Nat kept going with their reverse sweeps and scoops, with short third and fine leg were in the circle. Knight punished Rajeshwari Gayakwad for consecutive fours in the ninth, before Nat gave Shafali Verma the same treatment in the next over to take them to 72 at the halfway mark. But soon after their stand reached 50, Knight struck a Shikha Pandey full toss straight to cover for 28. Nat was closing in on her fifty during three boundary-less overs, before Jones took on the bowlers with three fours and a six in the space of seven balls. She heaved Pooja Vastrakar for six soon after scooping her for four, and struck Radha Yadav for consecutive fours at the end of the 16th over to power England to 117 with four overs left. Nat’s dismissal for 50 didn’t pull them down either; Jones and Sophie Ecclestone smacked Deepti Sharma for sixes in a 17-run over before Renuka struck twice more in her last over to claim her first five-for although England just got past 150.Smriti Mandhana hit Katherine Brunt-Sciver for four fours in an over•Getty ImagesSmriti Mandhana fights, but without supportEven though it continued to be overcast during the chase, England’s spinners – and not quicks – stifled India. Runs flowed easily early on when Katherine and Lauren Bell were wayward – there were three wides in the first seven balls – and India’s real charge came when Mandhana tore into Katherine for four fours in five balls with a cut, a straight loft and pulls either side of deep square-leg.Shafali, however, top-edged a Bell short ball to mid-on for 8. The scoring rate dropped after Mandhana had lofted Charlie Dean over mid-on for her fifth four, when Knight brought on spin from both ends with the powerplay over. Even though Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues were itching to get the boundaries, they couldn’t find the gaps or middle the attempted big shots. With just 28 runs coming off five overs leading into the tenth over, Rodrigues found long-on while looking for a release shot and, seven balls later, Harmanpreet Kaur went for a wild swing against Ecclestone for a leading edge to cover where Capsey held on to a juggling catch.Too much for Richa Ghosh to doGhosh’s arrival ended the boundary drought of 44 balls as she hit back-to-back fours on the leg side off Nat, followed by Mandhana sending Dean for glorious boundaries over the covers. With 68 needed from 42, Sarah Glenn and Ecclestone bowled with flat trajectories and tight lines respectively to concede just nine runs in two overs, which put the pressure on India again. Mandhana then unleashed an inside-out six but followed it by holing out to long-on, leaving a big task for the lower order.Ghosh was on a run-a-ball 22 and India needed 47 off 24. Nat sent down a four-run over and Ghosh ate up three dots from Bell, which left India with 34 to get from 12 and 31 from six, which was always going to be tough.

Lyon spins India out again; Australia need 76 to win

Cheteshwar Pujara top-scored with 59, the only batter to pass 30 as India were dismissed for 163 in their second innings

Alex Malcolm02-Mar-2023A remarkable eight-wicket haul from Nathan Lyon put Australia on the brink of a rare Test win in India. The game, however, was far from over after a stunning first-innings batting collapse from the visitors and an obdurate half-century from Cheteshwar Pujara kept the hosts in the contest in Indore.Day two was even more chaotic than day one, with Lyon claiming 8 for 64 to bowl India out for 163 in the second innings on the stroke of stumps, setting Australia a target of just 76. It would not have been that many without Pujara’s 142-ball 59. It might not have been that many without another chaotic Australian collapse in the morning session that will give India’s bowlers hope on the third day.Australia had led by 77 runs with six first-innings wickets in hand at drinks on the second morning only to lose 6 for 11 in 34 balls of chaos to let India back into the game. On a spinner’s paradise, Umesh Yadav took three wickets in three overs to finish with figures of 3 for 12, while R Ashwin bagged three at the other end to bowl Australia out with a lead of just 88. Their tail has provided no resistance on the entire tour, but this was statistically among the worst lower-order collapses in Australia’s Test history.Related

Stats – Lyon trumps Kumble, and India's rare batting slump

Pujara had to work exceptionally hard to erase India’s deficit without much help from his top-order teammates as Lyon never let them breathe during an unwavering spell from around the wicket after lunch. Pujura stood firm but he never stood still in nearly four hours of attrition to keep India alive. Having learned from his mistake in the first-innings, he played almost exclusively on the front foot with a vertical bat, always playing in front of his pad, and used his feet superbly to smother the spin of Lyon, Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann. It was something his team-mates could not manage. Shubman Gill fell to a wild heave across the line to Lyon in the first over after lunch. Rohit Sharma misjudged the length going back to a full ball from Lyon. Virat Kohli played an ill-fated cross-bat shot off the back foot to Kuhnemann, before Ravindra Jadeja was unable to get his bat in front of his pad as he was trapped plumb in front by Lyon.India’s deficit though had been whittled to just 9 by tea and it quickly became a lead of 23 with six wickets in hand just four overs after the break. Shreyas Iyer thumped three fours and two sixes to leave Australia wondering if they had let the game slip from an impregnable position, just as they had done in Delhi. But Steven Smith, who captained magnificently in Pat Cummins’ absence, pulled the right rein by bringing Mitchell Starc into the attack. Shreyas chipped the ball to midwicket where Usman Khawaja took a diving catch to his left, having spent almost all of the second session off the field.Cheteshwar Pujara was superbly caught by Steven Smith at leg slip•Getty ImagesShreyas’ exit allowed Lyon to attack again from around the wicket. He beat KS Bharat on the outside edge with one that slid on to crash into middle and off before trapping R Ashwin plumb with one that spun back past the inside edge.India led by 52 with three wickets in hand but Australia were still sweating with India’s best batter in the series Axar Patel joining Pujara. Lyon kept probing, Smith kept tinkering with the field, and eventually the reward came. Smith took a stunning one-hander at leg slip having left that position vacant quite a lot during Pujara’s innings. Lyon was able to claim the final two wickets without Axar doing major damage and they avoided a nervy couple of overs starting the chase on the second night in the process. It was sweet relief for Australia having earlier butchered a chance to take the game well beyond India’s reach in the first innings. Peter Handscomb and Cameron Green had added 30 without loss and without any drama in the first hour of day two. Both batters had defended well and used their feet smartly to find scoring options without huge risk. Less than half an hour later Australia were all out with a lead of just 88, having lost 6 for 11 in 34 deliveries. It was a stunning turnaround sparked by Ashwin and Umesh, two bowlers Rohit had hardly used in the first hour. Ashwin found the perfect length that he had been searching for on day one and extracted some extra turn and bounce to have Handscomb caught at short leg. Umesh then claimed the key scalp of Green with a ball that just straightened a touch off the seam and had Green playing the wrong line as tried to work through the leg side. He was hit on the back leg and adjudged lbw by Joel Wilson. Had he not been given out, India would have had no reviews to use. Ball tracking had it clipping the outside corner of leg stump. Australia folded from there as they have done so often in this series with Umesh castling Starc and Murphy’s off stump with fast reverse-swinging deliveries from around the wicket while Ashwin got through Carey and Lyon’s defences with ease.

Mbappe was the undisputed star at PSG after Lionel Messi left for Inter Miami and Neymar was sold to Al-Hilal, but the French giants have improved since his free transfer to Real Madrid last summer. Having won Ligue 1 by 19 points, they could complete a European and domestic treble in their upcoming Champions League and Coupe de France finals.

The Spanish coach is happy his players have stepped up to share the goals and assists in Mbappe's absence this season as he highlighted the changes he made that turned them into contenders for the Champions League crown.

WHAT LUIS ENRIQUE SAID

The PSG boss said in a press conference on Wednesday: "We scored more goals than last season, and more players provided assists. Our numbers are exceptional. To achieve this, our players need to get the ball to whoever is best positioned. Many players scored or provided assists, and I'm very happy not to be dependent on just one player.

"Last year, too, we were a real team. I said we would manage to improve the team. Players have arrived, and the numbers show that the team is better. But we were a team last year, without a doubt. Don't forget that we also played in a Champions League semi-final."

He added: "I was delighted with what I saw, what we tried. Players were criticised and exploded. We had to overcome all that. We played some very high-level games in the Champions League and lost them, like Atletico Madrid and Liverpool. The change was when we broke the deadlock in terms of efficiency. Some players managed to get into better positions in the box. We've gone from lamentable statistics to the best in Europe. It's the same version of the team but with efficiency."

Mbeumo's form this past season didn't go unnoticed, scoring 20 Premier League goals as a wide forward – only Mohamed Salah (28), Alexander Isak (23) and Erling Haaland (22) got more during the campaign. As such, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, all of whom are in the 2025-26 Champions League, had shown interest. But even though United cannot offer European football at all until at least 2026-27, they are seemingly Mbeumo's preference if the clubs can reach a compromise.

Mbeumo is an example of a late bloomer, having made only four top flight league appearances – all for Troyes in Ligue 1 – prior to Brentford's promotion to the Premier League in 2021. He was 22 at the start of the 2021-22 campaign and has improved year on year.

He is about to enter the final year of his current contract. Even though there is an option for the Bees to extend it by another 12 months, the risk of his value starting to fall if they don't cash in this summer could be a factor. WTC final: Have India made a mistake in leaving out R Ashwin?

Ricky Ponting, Sanjay Manjrekar and Brad Haddin all think so, citing Ashwin’s record against Australia and the nature of The Oval track

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jun-20231:36

Manjrekar ‘surprised’ by Ashwin’s omission

Did India fall into the trap of picking an attack that works only for the first innings at the WTC final? Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, certainly thinks so.Ponting said on television commentary that the dryness underneath the surface, which had more than just a sprinkling of live grass, would have brought him into the game, especially with Australia having four left-hand batters in the top seven – Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Travis Head and Alex Carey.”Australia have many left-handers; Ashwin would trouble the left-handers more than Jadeja. I saw the grass, yes there was grass but the deeper I looked, it seemed dry to me,” Ponting said on Star Sports.Former India captain Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile, felt highly-skilled bowlers like Ashwin had the potential to take pitches out of the equation, so it was worth India taking a punt on him.”It need not be always a turning track as sometimes the spinners rely a lot on the bounce, sometimes that little bit of zip that they get off the pitch, also on the overhead conditions and it depends a lot on the shiny side of the ball,” he said in the build-up to the toss, on his website . “If they are able to get that drift, they can make the ball talk in the air without the pitch coming into play. So, The Oval is going to be good venue for India.”Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar echoed Ponting’s views on the surface, expressing surprise at Ashwin’s omission. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s analysis show Match Day, he cited Ashwin’s success against Australia, both in Australia (2020-21) and India (2022-23) and his overall record overseas since 2018.”It seems like they’re convinced this pitch is very seam-friendly, because Ashwin of late in overseas matches has been pretty good,” Manjrekar said. “There’s clearly a green look to it [pitch] but the soil underneath looked white to suggest there’s some dryness as well, and The Oval historically has never been a seaming pitch.”Manjrekar also felt Jasprit Bumrah’s non-availability may have influenced the team management, pushing them towards four seamers and one spinner instead of a 3-2 attack. With Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami picking themselves and India seemingly intent on playing Shardul Thakur for the all-round depth he lends alongside Ravindra Jadeja, it was between Umesh Yadav and Ashwin for the final spot and India went with the former. In Thakur’s favour, his previous performance at The Oval was match turning: twin half-centuries to go with three wickets to help India to a 157-run win and go 2-1 up against England in September 2021.Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, Manjrekar’s co-panelist on Match Day, also felt the absence of a fierce competitor like Ashwin in a contest as big as this may put “massive pressure” on India’s four-pronged pace attack.”It [Ashwin] would’ve been the first name I would’ve looked at [on the team sheet] if I was one of the [opposition’s] left-handers,” he said. “You want a player, especially in a big event like this, who walks towards the fire. And Ashwin’s definitely one of those guys against Australia.”He loves playing against them, gets into the contest. I know he gets under the skin of the Australian batsmen. One of the big successes India have had over Australia has been due to Ashwin’s presence. They’ll miss him out there and the pressure is on four quicks to put pressure on that middle order.”Did the experience of the previous WTC final play a part in India’s decision?Ashwin was part of India’s XI when they played the WTC final in 2021 against New Zealand in Southampton. Back then, India fielded three seamers and two spinners, while New Zealand played four specialist seamers and had a fifth option in allrounder Colin de Grandhomme. It’s a decision India rued later, as they lost in conditions where there was plenty for the fast bowlers all through – and rain around. Ashwin didn’t feature in any of the four subsequent Tests India played later in that summer against England. Were India scarred by that decision from 2021?”Maybe,” Manjrekar said. “But conditions were different. It was a venue where seam bowlers had to bowl. New Zealand had five seam options. I believe you have to look at the history of a certain venue and a pitch rather than how a pitch looks on day one.”Ashwin, for many reasons, would’ve been a good selection [here], plus he adds a bit of batting depth as well. The Ashwin we saw against New Zealand in that WTC final and the Ashwin of today, there’s a marked change in the way he bowls. This Ashwin you’d think would’ve done well in these conditions. Having said that, Jadeja against the left-handers isn’t too bad, maybe that is the reason why they felt we can still it do with one spinner.”

Ter Stegen missed much of last season with a serious knee injury and has now revealed he needs a back operation that will keep him out for several months. While he vowed to "be back" in an emotional social media post, Barcelona may be in a bit of a pickle when it comes to goalkeepers for the upcoming season.

AdvertisementWHAT TER STEGEN SAID

"Dear Culers, I wear the colours and jersey of FC Barcelona with great pride, whether on or off the pitch, in moments of success and in difficult times.

"Today is a personally difficult day for me. Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately, I am not free from pain. After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery. After my last operation on my back, I returned to the pitch after 66 days—almost two months; this time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks. Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear. I will keep you updated on my recovery and I sincerely want to thank you all, dear Culers, for always being by my side.

"Don’t worry – I’ll be back! Yours, Marc"
