Liverpool fans flock to FSG out rumour

Fans of Liverpool have been reacting to a post on Twitter, in which Indykaila claimed that sources have revealed FSG are looking to sell the club.

Following the enormous backlash to Liverpool’s announcement that they had joined the proposed European Super League, the Reds released a statement late on Tuesday evening which revealed that the club had made a dramatic U-turn on their original decision, and that their “involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued.”

On Wednesday morning, John W Henry – Liverpool’s principal owner – then made a grovelling apology to fans for the Reds’ involvement in the formation of the ESL, suggesting that he and the club heard their dismay regarding the proposals.

However, according to Indykaila, “multiple sources” have claimed that the Reds’ American owners, FSG, are now looking to sell the club, something which appeared to delight a vast number of Liverpool fans, many of whom flocked to Twitter to share their feelings on the matter.

So, what exactly did these Liverpool fans have to say in reaction to the news?

Robinson discusses Bielsa’s Leeds future

Leeds United are trying to tie down Marcelo Bielsa to a new two-year deal at Elland Road, according to former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The Argentine has been a revelation since taking charge of the club back in the summer of 2018, guiding them back into the Premier League. Not only that, but he has comfortably avoided relegation on Leeds’ return to the top flight, with his team currently ninth in the table.

The 65-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of this season, though, and he is yet to commit his future to the club, no doubt concerning many supporters.

Robinson makes claim over Bielsa’s future

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson who played for Leeds and Tottenham among others – claimed that the Elland Road club are doing their best to tie down Bielsa for another two years in the hot seat in what would be a significant development. He said:

“This is a really difficult one for me because it’s two clubs really close to my heart. I can’t decide who I want to win when the two teams play each other.

“But I have a huge amount of respect for Bielsa and what a good manager he is. I know Leeds are trying to sign him on a two-year deal and they need to do that as quickly as possible.

“After that, they need a contingency plan where he’s involved in finding his successor.

“He’s got a huge role to play at Leeds and from their point of view it’s hugely important that he stays for however many years he wants to be there.

“When he does leave another manager will come in and no one works like Bielsa. He’s a unique man. To find someone else like him would be almost impossible.

“I think they should go for [Mauricio] Pochettino. Let him win some trophies at PSG and then in a couple of years bring him to Leeds.

“For Tottenham, though, Bielsa would be an absolutely fantastic appointment.”

Transfer Tavern take

The hope is that Bielsa will sign on the dotted line – he hasn’t suggested otherwise, which must be considered a positive. He comes across as a loyal person who won’t want to leave Leeds at a point when they are only growing as a club during a rich period in their history.

It could be argued that only Bielsa staying on will allow the Whites to continue on their current trajectory, such is his quality and influence as a manager, highlighting the importance of the next few months.

In other news, a world-renowned attacker linked with Leeds has reportedly make a decision over his future. Find out who it is here.

Bent impressed with Watford’s Sarr

Marcus Bent has exclusively told Football FanCast that Everton should sign Ismaila Sarr, who they were tentatively linked with last summer, with the ex-Toffees striker believing he is approaching the peak of his career.

Sarr joined Watford the summer before last, and became their club-record signing from Rennes, although he almost left the club following their relegation to the Championship last season.

The Senegalese winger was involved in a transfer saga with Manchester United, who were heavily linked, but he ended up staying at Vicarage Road and has lit up the second-tier with a number of sparkling performances.

Sarr has scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists to help Watford bounce back at the first time of asking, with his brilliant form likely to once again attract interest from the Premier League.

And with Everton in need of another winger themselves, with neither Alex Iwobi nor Bernard cutting it, Bent would be happy should his former side move for Sarr.

He told Football FanCast:

“He’s stayed at Watford and he’s scored a load of goals and got them promoted. He’s on the rise, but he’s coming to an age where he’s showing maturity about his game.

“Being promoted, he’s still buzzing, playing in the Premier League, and he’s done really well. I think that would be a good move for him and Everton.”

Man City linked with Raphinha

Manchester City are the latest Premier League club to be linked with Leeds United winger Raphinha, with two of their biggest rivals also reportedly interested in signing the Brazilian this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, City have joined the race to sign the highly-rated 24-year-old, with Manchester United and Liverpool both still holding an interest in him ahead of the summer transfer window.

He also suggested that Leeds are eager to keep him, which is unsurprising after his superb debut season with the Elland Road outfit, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side having signed him from Rennes following their promotion from the Championship last summer.

Would he be a good signing?

In 26 appearances for Leeds so far this season, Raphinha has contributed six goals and six assists, averaging a superb 7.17 WhoScored rating for his performances.

He was one of Leeds’ most impressive performers in their 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in April, with his pace and trickery regularly causing problems for City’s defence, so it is no surprise to hear that they are now showing an interest in him ahead of the summer.

Raphinha has averaged 2.1 key passes and 2.3 shots per game so far this season, which only Kevin De Bruyne can better in the current Manchester City squad, which immediately suggests that he would be an excellent addition to Guardiola’s side ahead of next season.

The £22.5m-rated winger has won no shortage of plaudits for his displays this season, with Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes reportedly a big fan, as his teammate Fred confessed earlier in the season, perhaps in an attempt to convince him to move to Old Trafford.

The Brazilian said: Bruno’s been talking about Raphinha ever since he arrived. They played together at Sporting.

He’s a great player having an amazing season and a lot of clubs have their eye on him.

Considering his impressive performances this season, it would be a blow for City to lose out on Raphinha to their nearest rivals, so sporting director Txiki Begiristain should be putting plans in motion to bring him to the Etihad this summer.

CPFC: Fans react to Roy Hodgson comments

A number of Crystal Palace supporters have been left stunned at Roy Hodgson’s comments in his Sheffield United press conference on Friday.

The 73-year-old, who is out of contract at Selhurst Park in a matter of months, was speaking to the media ahead of the Eagles’ trip to Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Palace have scored just 34 goals in 33 Premier League games this season and have only netted three or more times in a fixture on three occasions, with the last time coming way back in December.

Hodgson knows his side will have to be more attack-minded against the already relegated Blades to come away with three points.

Talking to the media, he said:

“We’re going to have to be bolder in an attacking sense, maybe that compact shape isn’t going to be as good as it’s been as we are going to need to take more risks going forward. We’re aware it’s a delicate balance but we’ll take the game to Sheffield United.”

His comments were shared by The Athletic’s Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam, and they didn’t take long to make their way on to social media.

Leeds United: Marcelo Bielsa must axe Alioski

With the Premier League season now winding down, Marcelo Bielsa may treat these final few Leeds United games as a chance to start planning ahead for the new campaign.

The Whites will hope to enjoy another major transfer window in the summer, after the success last year saw the likes of Raphinha and Diego Llorente be brought in for the club’s return to the top-flight.

But one man who Bielsa must surely now ensure doesn’t play for the club again, is Gjanni Alioski.

The 29-year-old’s contract at Elland Road expires come the end of the season, and reports in recent weeks have suggested that the likes of Galatasaray are interested in signing him on a free transfer.

With still no talks of Alioski putting pen to paper on a new deal at the club, it seems rather pointless to be keep playing him in the Premier League, particularly when the Whites aren’t really involved in the fight for a European place.

Those precious first-team minutes could be given to someone like Niall Huggins, who’s been shining at academy level and is surely deserving of a chance to impress before the campaign ends.

And while Alioski may have impressed with a superb display at the weekend against Spurs, in general, he’s let Bielsa down far too often with his lapses in concentration – something former Leeds man Noel Whelan has been quick to point out.

He told Football Insider: “Alioski was diabolical to be quite honest with you. The free-kick, where he is trying to get a megs in the wrong area, that was his first mistake. The second mistake was back to the Alioski of old.

“We saw that weakness on the left-hand side again. The right thing was to take him off, 100 per cent. He was a liability. Another game which highlighted our need to go into the market for a left-back.”

He added: “Leeds need a natural full-back there that you know can cover most bases, definitely defensively because as much as he gives everything, he is a liability. He’s not the best of defenders.

The £55k-a-week ace should be nowhere near the first-team picture in these final couple of weeks of the Premier League season, and his Leeds career should now effectively be already over.

Meanwhile, this Leeds United transfer target would be a major upgrade for Marcelo Bielsa…

Howey says Nuno will have many CB targets

Steve Howey has exclusively told Football FanCast that Nuno Espirito Santo will be looking at a variety of centre-backs this summer and will have identified his own targets.

Wolves are ending the season in impressive form having collected 10 points from their previous five Premier League matches.

Santo’s men have managed two clean sheets during that five-game period, but have generally struggled defensively this term, and bar Leeds, have the worst defensive record in the top-12.

Captain Conor Coady has missed just one Premier League game and has been joined in a back-three by a combination of Kilman, Romain Saiss and Willy Boly, whilst midfielder Leander Dendoncker has occasionally dropped back.

However, with the latter recently turning 30 and already suffering from several muscle problems, and youngster Kilman reportedly set to be offloaded, Wolves will be looking to bolster their central defensive department this summer.

“Nuno will be looking at all different kind of players,” Howey told Football FanCast when asked whether Santo could be targeting a move for out-of-favour Manchester City man Nathan Ake.

He added:

“The manager will have connections all over – again abroad. And he could be looking at other people.”

Celtic: Hjelde could thrive under Howe

At long last, Celtic supporters can crawl into hibernation and hide for the next few months.

Their long gruelling campaign has come to a close with little fight from the Hoops, drawing their final game 0-0 in a match that typified their woeful season.

This has been a shambolic term from start to finish for the Bhoys as they failed to lift silverware for the first time in a decade.

You can blame Peter Lawwell for the appointment of Neil Lennon or you can blame Nick Hammond for his shoddy transfer policy.

Whatever way you look at it, negativity has found a way to engulf Paradise. Celtic’s home hasn’t lived up to its name this season, housing languid football and toxic protests.

That said, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

Eddie Howe looks set to arrive as the next Celtic boss and with him, he’ll bring a number of new coaches with fresh and vibrant ideas.

After all, the backroom staff he hopes to bring in has been part of a Bournemouth team who have earned a place in the Championship play-offs.

Howe had great success at Bournemouth, a stint that embodied a Football Manager simulation in the real world. He took the Cherries from League Two to the Premier League and then managed to sustain their top-flight status for five years.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Playing an aesthetically pleasing brand of football, the south coast side liked to play with the ball on the deck and with lots of possession.

By doing so, the 43-year-old manager developed Nathan Ake into one of the eye-catching central defenders in England.

Previously of Chelsea, the Dutchman found a home for himself under Howe, developing astutely before Manchester City paid £40m for him last summer.

Ake was a key cog in the machine at the Vitality Stadium, playing out from the back and starting attacks with his incisive passing. During his final season with Bournemouth, he completed over 87% of his passes, a number that’s only improved since joining the Premier League Champions.

At Man City this term, the defender has completed 93.1% of his passes; a particularly impressive number.

With that in mind, it wouldn’t be a great surprise if Howe wanted his defenders to play out from the back at Celtic.

This would be perfect for Kristoffer Ajer, someone who registered a pass success rate of 97% against Hibernian last weekend. It would also be ideal for the Norwegian’s protégé; Leo Hjelde.

Dubbed the next Virgil van Dijk by Ross County boss John Hughes, the 17-year-old has caught the eye while on loan at Dingwall during the second half of the season.

He is a special talent, a player that Howe simply has to turn to if he’s handed the reins at Paradise.

Hjelde is a centre-back by trade and plays in a very similar way to Ajer, pressing relentlessly and marauding forward.

Speaking earlier this season, the teenager commented: “Kristoffer is a very good player and he had the same career path like me too.”

He added: “I like to be on the ball and try to create things too but my main priority always has to be defending. I keep in contact with him still. He has been very good to me and he still gets in touch and gives me advice.”

With this in mind, Howe would be foolish not to unleash him at Parkhead next season.

His style of football and the way he developed a promising centre half like Ake suggests he could turn Hjelde into something special too.

In the words of Hughes, he’s got a “massive future.” Celtic need to nurture him and ensure he lives up to the Van Dijk billing.

Emiliano Martinez on Jan Oblak’s level

Emiliano Martinez is on the same level as Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak, claims former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie.

This comes after reports from Spain last month suggested that the Spanish outfit could make a move for Martinez if they lose Oblak this summer.

Martinez has been a revelation at Villa since joining from Arsenal last year, ranking among the top three goalkeepers for clean sheets kept in the Premier League this season.

And for Hendrie, the 28-year-old is in the same category as Oblak, who has a staggering £120m release clause.

When asked in an exclusive interview with TT whether Martinez was on the same level as the Slovenia international amid Atletico’s reported interest, the ex-Villa player said:

“Yeah, one hundred percent, one hundred percent. I was surprised that Martinez was actually allowed to come to the football club if I’m being deadly honest. I actually looked at [Bernd] Leno and I just thought that Martinez was the one that I would have kept.

“You look at his stats this season and he’s been top drawer. When you’re being classed as a top goalkeeper in the Premier League, yes, there’s no doubt about it. When you compare levels, he’s definitely on that level.”

Looking at Oblak’s release clause, it is hard to imagine any team coming in for him. But, based on this season, Martinez could be a good replacement if he did end up departing the Wanda Metropolitano.

AVFC: Fans fume at Ezri Konsa’s England exclusion

Plenty of Aston Villa fans were left disappointed after defender Ezri Konsa was left out of Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Southgate named Tyrone Mings, Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins in his 33-man squad, with no room for Konsa or Matt Targett.

That squad will have to be trimmed down to 26 players over the coming days, but plenty of Villa supporters were baffled at Konsa not making the initial 33.

He missed just two Premier League games all season and was key in a Villa defence that kept 15 clean sheets during the 2020/21 campaign.

Konsa, who can also represent Portugal, has turned out for the Three Lions at Under-21 level, but a maiden senior call up will, unfortunately, have to wait.

Villa fans react

Villa shared the news on Mings, Grealish and Watkins on their official Twitter page on Tuesday afternoon.

However, these supporters wanted to talk about Konsa’s exclusion, with one describing the decision to overlook him as ‘terrible’.
