In the latest stop on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool farewell tour, the Reds found themselves at Wembley up against Chelsea for the third time in the German's tenure. And like those two previous occasions, neither side could get the job done in the full 90. Instead, the stage was set for Virgil van Dijk to become the late hero in extra time. But that's not to say that the Carabao Cup final didn't issue Klopp another frustrating blow.
Liverpool injury news
Ever since Klopp announced that this would be his final season in charge at Anfield, the Reds have suffered injury after injury – blows which could eventually decide just where the Premier League title ends up. Sunday's Carabao Cup final laid bare for all to see just how many injury issues those at Anfield have been forced to deal with, as academy stars Bobby Clark, James McConnell and Jayden Danns were thrust into the action when Liverpool had no one else to turn to.

What's more, Conor Bradley was also forced to play in Mohamed Salah's usual role when Ryan Gravenberch came off injured in the first half. Klopp decided to bring Harvey Elliott into midfield, substitute Joe Gomez into the right-back role and then deploy Bradley into the more attacking position down the right-hand side.
Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.
It was a dilemma that the Reds may be forced to solve once again too. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Klopp confirmed that Ryan Gravenberch is expected to miss the next two games.
Without yet another midfielder for games against Southampton in the FA Cup and then Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, Liverpool must once again find a way to battle to victory.
How Liverpool could replace "complete" Gravenberch
Gravenberch's injury comes at a frustrating time not only for Klopp but the player, himself, having regained some form in recent weeks. Now, however, for the next two games at least, Liverpool must turn to Elliott once again to step into midfield and get the job done, whilst hoping that Salah makes his return from injury in the frontline.
If it is not Elliott who steps up, then it wouldn't be a great surprise to see the likes of Clark and McConnell called upon in the FA Cup against Southampton after their Wembley heroics. It's some ask to replace a player of Gravenberch's ability when at his best though, and Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders was quick to remind everyone of that ability earlier this season.

Coutinho leaves Aston Villa
Joins boyhood club on loan
Current contract with the Villans runs until 2026
WHAT HAPPENED?
The ex-Brazil international has finally completed his move back to his homeland as he leaves the Villans on loan to join boyhood club Vasco da Gama. As per earlier reports, the 32-year-old initially tried to terminate his contract to join Vasco on a permanent transfer as a free agent, however, his parent club did not agree and instead released him on a temporary deal.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Coutinho joined Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona in January 2022 before making his transfer permanent six months later. However, he failed to make an impact under Unai Emery and was sent out on loan to Qatari side Al-Duhail ahead of the 2023-24 season. The player still has two years left in his contract with the Premier League club.
WHAT ASTON VILLA SAID
The official statement on the midfielder's transfer from the club read: "Aston Villa can confirm that Philippe Coutinho has joined Vasco da Gama on a season-long loan. The Brazilian returns to his homeland having spent last term with Al Duhail. After signing for Villa initially on loan in January 2022, he went on to pen a permanent deal at Villa Park and has made 43 appearances for the club, scoring six goals."

WHAT NEXT FOR ASTON VILLA?
Emery's men will regroup on Wednesday for pre-season. They are scheduled to visit Slovakia briefly before heading to the US on tour.
For all their athletic ability and untold riches, football players tend to be pretty average when it comes to height, for sports stars at least. You don't tend to see many players exceeding 1.92m – or 6 foot 3 – and it usually becomes a talking point when they do.
For example, Peter Crouch was a great player in his own right, but he is remembered for being one of the tallest players we have ever seen. Put him up against a basketball player, however, and he is distinctly average – height-wise, that is.
So how tall can professional players get, and who are the tallest professional players in world football today?
With that in mind, we have created a list of the 10 tallest football players still playing the game today in 2024 using data from Transfermarkt.

Carlos Miguel (Corinthians)
2.04m (6 foot 7) – Goalkeeper
We're kicking off our list with a goalkeeper – there is going to be plenty of those – from South America, Brazil to be exact.
Carlos Miguel comes in at a massive 2.04m, or just about 6 foot 7, and we say massive regarding the rest of us. Compared to the rest of the players on this list, he's a good one to two inches shorter.
Miguel began his career in Internacional's reserve side before spending a couple of seasons on loan with Santa Cruz and Boa Esporte before making a permanent move to Brazilian giants Corinthians in August 2021.
He isn't the side's number-one keeper, but he has made eight first-team appearances this year and kept six clean sheets in the process, which is pretty good going for a backup.
9
Armin Spahic (TOSK Tesanj)
2.05m (6 foot 8) – Centre-back
The second man to make it onto our list is Austrian centre-back Armin Spahic, who is the first of three players to come in at 2.05m, or about 6 foot 8.
The 23-year-old is currently plying his trade in Bosnia-Herzegovina for second-tier side TOSK Tesanj, who he only joined in September of last year from fellow Bosnian second-tier side OFK Gradina Srebrenik.
The Austrian looks to be enjoying a relatively successful first season with his new club as he has featured in the starting XI 11 times so far this season and has even found himself on the scoresheet on one occasion – not bad for a new defender.
8
Milan Ziric (Vorwarts Steyr)
2.05m (6 foot 8) – Centre-back
We've got another Austrian centre-back measuring 6 foot 8 inches coming in next, although instead of playing in the Bosnian second division, he has stayed closer to home.
Milan Ziric plays for Austrian third-tier side Vorwarts Steyr, joining them in July last year from fourth-tier side SPG Wels II.
Like his compatriot in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ziric is having a great season with his new side, starting 12 games so far this season and helping them climb to fourth in the table – as things stand.
7
Lucas Bergstrom (Chelsea)
2.05m (6 foot 8) – Goalkeeper
Chelsea goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom.
The last 6 foot 8 player on the list is our second goalkeeper and the first player to ply his trade on these shores, in the Premier League, no less.
Lucas Berstrom is currently a Chelsea player and has been ever since his move from Finnish side Turun Palloseura during the 2018/19 season.
He spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Peterborough United and made 28 first-team appearances for the posh, in which he kept nine clean sheets.
He hasn't made a first-team appearance for the Blues yet, but he was on the team's preseason tour of America and has one international cap to his name.
6
Kevin Gadella (FC Utrecht II)
2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper
We have reached the players on this list who tower above pretty much everyone else on a football pitch and probably wouldn't look amiss on a basketball court.
Kevin Gadella plys his trade in his home country of the Netherlands with FC Utrecht II – their under 21 team – and he has been having a mixed season so far this year.
He has featured in 13 games for the club, and he has let in 24 goals and kept five clean sheets so far, and with the team down in 19th place, he'll surely be looking to improve as the campaign continues.
5
Kjell Scherpen (SK Sturm Graz)
2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper
We're back in the Premier League for the next one, well, sort of.
Kjell Scherpen is currently on loan to Austrian first-tier side Sturm Graz, but his parent club are Brighton & Hove Albion, back in the English top-flight.
The young Dutchman joined the Seagulls from Eredivisie giants Ajax in the summer of 2021 for an undisclosed fee before spending time in Belgium and the Netherlands on loan before ending up in Austria this season.
He's been having a cracking season this year, having conceded just 32 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, as well as keeping nine clean sheets in the process.
It would be great to see him make it in the Premier League one day, just to see how some of the shorter strikers cope with him.

4
Denys Tvardovskyi (Shakhtar Donetsk)
2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper
The fourth spot gives us our fourth goalkeeper on the bounce – we did say there were a lot of them on this list – and it's Shakhtar Donetsk's backup, Denys Tvardovskyi.
The 20-year-old has been with the Ukrainian giants for his entire professional career but has yet to be given the opportunity to start a game for the first team, let alone an appearance off the bench.
However, he has started eight games in the UEFA Youth League for the U19s, conceding 12 goals but keeping three clean sheets. He has also earned three caps for the Ukrainian U19 side and one for the U21s.
We reckon it won't be long until we see him in the starting XI for Shakhtar.
3
Isaak Toure (FC Lorient)
2.06m (6 foot 9) – Centre-back
The third spot on the list gives us a much-needed break from the wall-to-wall goalkeepers of the last four entries – my apologies to the union – with 20-year-old centre-back Isaak Toure claiming the bronze.
The Gonesse-born titan stands at 2.06m – 6 foot 9 – and currently plys his trade for Ligue 1 side FC Lorient after completing a move from French giants Marseille earlier this summer.
He's having a reasonably successful season with the men in orange this year, appearing in 18 games and helping his team stay out of the relegation zone, for now at least.
2
Tomas Holy (Carlisle United)
2.06m (6 foot 9) – Goalkeeper
The penultimate player on our list is another goalkeeper who makes his living in the English leagues, Carlisle United's Tomas Holy.
Like the four players before him, the six-cap Czech international comes in at a whopping 6 foot 9 and has been a regular in the EFL ever since his 2017 move to Gillingham from Prague outfit Sparta Prague.
He would make over 100 appearances for the Gills before moving to Ipswich Town in 2019. A couple of loan moves to Cambridge United and Port Vale followed before he joined Carlisle on a permanent contract in the summer of 2022.
Since moving north, Holy has become one of the most important members of the first team and has made 73 appearances to date.
1
Kyle Hudlin (Huddersfield Town)
2.06m (6 foot 9) – Striker
Right, here we are, number one, and we have saved the best until last, a 6 foot 9 striker, yes, a striker.
Just think back to how big Peter Crouch used to look against regular defenders, and then add another two inches. That is how tall Huddersfield Town striker Kyle Hudlin is.
The 23-year-old forward started his career with Solihull before moving to Solihull Moors and finally to Huddersfield Town in July 2022. Since then, he has spent six months on loan with AFC Wimbledon before returning to the Terriers, where he still is this season.
However, he hasn't exactly proved his worth since joining as he's currently on loan at League One side Burton Albion.
However, the talent is undoubtedly there, as he was a real handful at Solihull Moors. Just have a look for yourselves.

However, ESPN reports that Erik ten Hag wants to make at least three more signings in central midfield, centre-back and right-back positions. The report further claims that United remains interested in Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt. At the same time, Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte is closely linked with a move to Old Trafford.
To fund further transfers, the Premier League giants are considering offloading as many as seven first-team players which include stars like Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Antony and Jadon Sancho.

Chelsea are said to have done a "tonne of leg work" to convince a star player to join them this summer, as they seek to fix a major problem.
Pochettino under pressure at Chelsea
It hasn't quite been the dream first season in charge for manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has overseen a disappointing debut campaign despite being backed with £400 million worth of signings in the summer.

Mar 12, 2024
There have been some suggestions that Pochettino could even be replaced by Chelsea if results take a turn for the worst, with rumours surrounding his future emerging on a consistent basis as results remain inconsistent.
The Blues lost their Carabao Cup final to Liverpool and look very unlikely to be contending for a European spot come the end of 2023/2024. A lot appears to be riding on their FA Cup run and whether they can make a success of their bid to win one of football's oldest competitions.
Pochettino isn't exactly helped by Chelsea's lack of a consistent 20-plus goal per season striker, and a lot of reports are claiming that a new centre-forward is top priority for Stamford Bridge chiefs.
Chelsea's links with Osimhen
One of the major names linked in that regard is Napoli star Victor Osimhen. The Nigeria international, who's been one of Serie A's most prolific goalscorers for a few years now, is thought to be top of the agenda for Chelsea right now.

"I think they will sign Victor Osimhen in the summer," said former Arsenal defender William Gallas. "I don’t know Victor that well as a person but he’s similar to Drogba. Didier was so strong but with Osimhen, he is also very quick. I’m sure he’ll do a lot of damage in the Premier League.
"Chelsea have so many players and that is a problem. They need to sell players because it’s a mess at Chelsea at the moment. I don’t know a lot about their financial situation but they need to figure out which players should stay and which players should leave.
‘In the Premier League, some clubs loan in players to replace players they have sold for more money but when you look at the situation with Enzo [Fernandez] and [Moises] Caicedo, they bought them for £100m, how much can they sell them for? Not much!."
Chelsea have done a tonne of leg work to sign Osimhen
According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have done a ton of leg work to sign Osimhen and convince him to join.
Sources have also been clear that the Blues have been at the front of the queue for him, but there are now real fears that Chelsea could miss out on the African, as both Arsenal and PSG could meet his wage demands of around £200,000-per-week.
Napoli star Victor Osimhen
Pochettino's may not be so keen to meet that, as they don't wish to break their wage structure, so it's believed to be offering their competitors a glimmer of hope.
The race for Osimhen appears to be intensifying as we slowly approach this summer, and it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Southgate resigned after Euro 2024 final loss
WHAT HAPPENED?
Following Gareth Southgate's exit from the England national team after their defeat in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, the Football Association are in the process of selecting a new permanent manager. Guardiola has been linked with the Three Lions' job as the FA are reportedly keen on appointing an overseas coach. The Catalan coach had earlier given a vague answer when asked about the England job, and during his latest press conference, the 53-year-old refused to rule out the prospect and noted that "we'll see what happens".

THE BIGGER PICTURE
England have not been managed by a foreign coach since Fabio Capello's departure in 2012. Southgate was in charge of the national team for eight years, reaching the final of the European Championship in 2021 and 2024, while reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals of their two World Cups under Southgate's stewardship.
Newcastle United may have just been dealt a boost on the transfer front ahead of the summer window opening, it has emerged.
Magpies dreading summer window
It is fair to say that few Newcastle fans are looking forward to the summer window as much as they have been in recent years. After a disappointing Premier League campaign, they have seen Everton and Nottingham Forest fall foul of financial fair play regulations and be docked points as a consequence, with both sides in danger of relegation from the top flight.
Summer reinforcements Harvey Barnes, Sandro Tonali and Lewis Hall have hardly featured through a combination of form, injuries and suspensions, while injuries have rocked Eddie Howe's squad from the first week of the season until now.

Speaking in January, he explained: "It's just the nature of the beast. If you trade players on it creates more headroom. You have to keep growing that headroom, increasing commercial revenue and player trading.
"It's difficult to say specifically on certain players, but I can say that, if we're going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players."
That has led to speculation around fan favourite Bruno Guimaraes, while Alexander Isak is another that could be shipped off in order to balance the books. Sven Botman could have been another candidate but a knee injury is likely to prevent that, with the Dutchman sidelined for the next nine months. But amid the gloom, there is good news for the Magpies.
Newcastle summer transfer news
That comes courtesy of Chronicle Live's Lee Ryder, who insists that the picture isn't as gloomy as it seems. Chiefly, he shares that there is plenty of money to spend this summer.
"United are set to have money to spend this summer despite FFP rules again set to be a big factor", he claims, albeit adding that departures are expected too.
It comes with Newcastle scout Steve Nickson enjoying a busy international break, in which he is suspected to have been keeping tabs on both Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alex Grimaldo and Barcelona winger Raphinha, both of whom Newcastle have a long term interest in.
Barcelona star Raphinha.
Certainly, scouting players of that calibre suggests that there will be plenty to spend on Tyneside this summer, though quite how much may ultimately depend on whether or not Howe's side can make a late push for one of the European qualification places in the final ten games of the campaign.
As it stands, they are marooned in 10th place and an outside bet for even Conference League football next season, in what has been a difficult campaign. However, Newcastle fans will take solace from the fact that the transfer well is far from dry on Tyneside.
Pep Guardiola's side have up to £82m to splash on a replacement for the Argentine after making a stunning return on their investment
Manchester City thought that they might have to replace Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva or Ederson this summer. But in the end, Pep Guardiola's most-trusted players all look set to stay.
Instead, the Cityzens' most high-profile departure looks like being Julian Alvarez. City sold El Arana (The Spider) to Atletico Madrid for £82 million ($105m) in a stunning piece of business, making more than five-times the amount they invested on bringing the Argentine to the Etihad Stadium two years previously.
Alvarez was a selfless stand-in for Erling Haaland for two seasons and also carried the baton in De Bruyne's absence, but ultimately he wanted as big a role for his club as he has for his national team and has now got it.
Atletico made City an offer they couldn't refuse and the money-spinning sale gives the champions the opportunity to heavily reinvest in their squad. But how should they replace the serial-winner who scored 36 goals and contributed 18 assists while helping them scoop up six trophies?
(C)Getty Images
Alexander Isak
The gangly Swedish striker became Newcastle's record signing when he switched from Real Sociedad to Tyneside for £63m ($80m) in the summer of 2022. But he could have joined City, as Pep Guardiola later revealed he was on the club's radar while still in Spain.
Isak has kept getting better, scoring 35 goals in all competitions with Newcastle, leaving Guardiola in awe. "We started to follow him at Real Sociedad. We were impressed. He was a target," the Catalan revealed last season.
"Wow. He is a young player but with these skills. All the clubs around the world take a look. It is not a surprise and he's adapted really well here in the Premier League."
Isak, 25, would make a perfect replacement for Alvarez, and although he would cost a lot, he would be a formidable stand-in for Haaland and could even play alongside him.

Lois Openda
City are well aware of Openda's capabilities as a striker after he scored three times against them in the Champions League last season. The goals were no fluke, as the 24-year-old struck 28 times in all competitions, finishing as the third-top scorer in the Bundesliga.
Openda became RB Leipzig's record signing when he joined from Lens for €45m (£38m/$49m) and they would be reluctant to let him go. However, the Germans have long been a selling club and would surely part with him if City could offer them a tidy profit, funded by the Alvarez cash.
Getty Images
Florian Wirtz
Wirtz is more of a No.10 than a centre-forward, but Alvarez often had to perform as a second striker for City so his replacement should also be able to play in both roles.
Wirtz was the standout performer for Xabi Alonso's incredible Bayer Leverkusen side last season, scoring 15 times and setting up another 15 goals for his team-mates. He is valued at more than £100m, which would make him City's record signing, but he could be more than worth it as a replacement not just for Alvarez, but also for De Bruyne, who looks set for his final season with the Cityzens.

Victor Osimhen
The Nigerian striker was the fifth-leading scorer in Europe when he fired Napoli to the Serie A title in 2022-23, but his relationship with the club has since soured and for some time he has been looking for a way out. Napoli were holding out for a huge transfer fee, but have since dropped their asking price to €100m (£85m/$110m), which is now within City's reach after the Alvarez deal.
Osimhen, 25, would want to be the main man at his next club, which could be an obstacle to him joining City, where Haaland is very much first-choice. But he would also be practically guaranteed silverware at the Etihad Stadium and City could not ask for a better back-up in the event the Norwegian got injured.
Over the last couple of seasons, Everton have had to work on a strict budget given their PSR and FFP troubles in recent months, with most signings either on free transfers or low transfer fees.
The FFP issues have allowed boss Sean Dyche to work closely with his squad, allowing him to drag his side clear of any looming relegation threat after the points deduction earlier this campaign.
Everton manager Sean Dyche.
The club have been forced to sell many of their key assets in recent years to balance the books, with the likes of Richarlison and Anthony Gordon just two examples of players the club have had to sell to try and comply with the Premier League's strict rules.
However, the club also allowed one member of the first team to depart the club back in 2021, with the former Toffee now excelling away from Goodison Park.
Bernard's stats at Everton
After arriving at Everton on a free transfer from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018, Brazilian winger Bernard took his time to settle into life in England, struggling to make an instant impact, scoring just once in his first season in the Premier League.
He never really made a huge impact with a goal return during his time with the Toffees, only finding the net on eight occasions during his 84 appearances during his time at the club.
However, his best campaign came in the 2019/20 season, with the "unbelievable" attacker, as hailed by Leighton Baines, registering three goals and two assists in his 27 league outings – including a brilliant solo effort in the victory over West Ham United.
He would fail to replicate his form of the aforementioned campaign, with the wideman only making 12 appearances in the Premier League after falling down the pecking order under boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Bernard would subsequently depart the Toffees during the summer of 2021, joining Sharjah FC in the United Arab Emirates on a two-year deal, bringing his three-year stint at the club to a close.
Bernard's stats in 2023/24
Three years on from his Everton departure, the now 31-year-old is plying his trade in Greece, starring for Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League.
He's enjoyed a brilliant campaign, with the Brazilian scoring on six occasions and providing nine assists during his 42 appearances in all competitions, in one of his most productive seasons to date.
His tally in Greece has seen him outscore £100k-per-week Toffees forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the 27-year-old only managing to find the net on four occasions under Dyche this campaign.

Albeit, the former Everton attacker has managed to score more goals in a lower-quality division, but in a campaign where the club are the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League, his creativity and goalscoring could've been of use to Dyche's side.
Nonetheless, it's good to see a former talent excelling after a difficult time in England – with Bernard never able to fully showcase the talent that he possesses whilst with Everton.

Wiley recently represented the U.S. men's national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he made three appearances off the bench. The USMNT crashed out in the quarterfinals, falling to eventual bronze medalists Morocco.
Wiley is widely seen as one of the top young prospects in the left back position in the USMNT pool. At Strasbourg, he'll earn his first European minutes as he strives to make the senior team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
