Charlton fans wouldn’t swap Tom Lockyer for former centre-back hero Patrick Bauer

Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to partake in an online debate over Tom Lockyer and former centre-back hero Patrick Bauer, and they have unanimously made up their mind.

The supporters on Twitter were asked if they would rather have Bauer instead of summer signing Lockyer, who arrived at The Valley after leaving Bristol Rovers at the end of last season.

Bauer – who now plays for Sunday’s opponents Preston – scored the winning goal against Sunderland in the League One playoff final last term, before departing south London for Deepdale on a free transfer.

The German has been one of Alex Neil’s best players this season, currently standing as their second-highest rated player on WhoScored.

In Lockyer’s case, the 6-cap Wales international has been outstanding since his summer move, drawing praise from some supporters on Twitter for his performances which have helped Charlton into 9th – just five points off the top.

Let’s take a look at some of the tweets in this one-sided debate…

Man Utd fans hail Marouane Fellaini for speaking out on Jose Mourinho sacking

Best known for his floppy hair and incredible heading abilities, Marouane Fellaini’s name has fallen off the radar in recent months.

The Belgium international left Manchester United in January this year to join Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng. The move ended a five-and-a-half year spell at Old Trafford, after he arrived from Premier League rivals Everton back in the summer of 2014.

However, it appears Fellaini hasn’t forgotten about his former club, and the 31-year-old delivered a damning verdict on the Red Devils’ decision to get rid of Jose Mourinho last December.

As quoted by The Telegraph, he said: “They brought in one of the best managers in the world in Jose Mourinho, he wanted to build a team and they sacked him. Mourinho, for the first season, he did amazingly, he improved the team, won things.

“OK, the second season was a bit more difficult, but he tried, you know, and did his best to help the team. Then they decided to sack him.”

After hearing their former ace’s comments, United fans flooded to Twitter to share their thoughts about the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side hailed the Belgian for speaking out on Mourinho’s sacking, and insisted that he is “spot on” with his words.

Some Red Devils supporters remarked that Fellaini’s “legendary status” at the club has now been restored following what he had to say.

West Ham fans react to Manuel Pellegrini’s Pablo Fornals claim

Pablo Fornals has found it difficult to make his mark for West Ham United this season.

The summer signing from Villarreal has made nine Premier League appearances for the Hammers but is yet to contribute a goal or an assist.

Statistics provided by WhoScored show that the Spaniard has a pass success rate of just over 84% in the Premier League this season.

His overall contribution has been limited at best, though.

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has insisted that the summer arrival will come good for the club once he has fully settled into his new surroundings.

And whilst a number of the club’s fans agreed with Pellegrini’s comments on the 23-year-old, others appeared slightly less patient.

After a strong run of form, West Ham have lost their last two Premier League games to Crystal Palace and Everton, which has led to a lot of frustration among the fans.

Liverpool could hand debuts to three players against MK Dons as injured stars return

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool’s trip to MK Dons provides Jurgen Klopp with the ideal opportunity to test out some unproven youngsters, whilst also easing players back into the side who are making a return from injury.

The German has often used domestic cup competitions to experiment with different players as it allows him to rest first-team members for more important matches in Europe and the Premier League, with success in those competitions his priority.

As a result, a new-look Liverpool side is likely to take to the pitch at Stadium MK, and with a number of promising youngsters making the trip, the only question is who will get the call.

Here is our predicted XI for the Carabao Cup clash.

Against Wolves in the FA Cup this year Klopp made the bold decision to start Curtis Jones, who is likely to feature along with Ki-Jana Hoever, another player who featured at Molineux in what was the only senior game for the club for both players.

The inclusion of Jones would certainly please the fans, and given his record of two goals and three assists in five Premier League 2 games he should have the quality to unlock a League One defence.

He will have a greater chance to do exactly that if he plays alongside Rhian Brewster and Harvey Elliott, two players who have featured next to him on a regular basis already this season.

Both have impressed U23s manager Neil Critchley this term and big things are expected of both, with Brewster finishing as top scorer in the Under 17s World Cup in 2017 and Elliott being the youngest ever player to play in the Premier League.

MK Dons promises to be a great challenge of their abilities, therefore, and a test to see if they are ready to feature regularly in Liverpool’s matchday squad this season, which could be necessary with injuries to Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri currently.

Whilst those absentees are a setback for Klopp, the return of Naby Keita to full fitness is a reason for optimism, and this match provides him with a great chance to rebuild his match fitness along with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana.

Both players are still recovering from long-term lay-offs, though, and therefore there is a likelihood that the midfield won’t be able to see out the game, which is a risk if the Reds need to bring on a forward to score or if they suffer an injury in another area.

Dejan Lovren is another who may appear for the first time this season, but for Caoimhin Kelleher it may possibly be an even more memorable occasion, as the goalkeeper could be in line to make his debut.

Liverpool fans keen to see Naby Keita & Oxlade-Chamberlain pair up in CL match

Liverpool host their first Champions League fixture of the season tonight with Red Bull Salzburg the visitors, and fans are keen to see a midfield duo take to the field.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have not got as much game time as they would have hoped for so far this campaign due to various injury and fitness issues.

The latter has been match fit since making a return from an ACL injury at the end of last season, but so far Jurgen Klopp has taken care in his recovery and he has been limited to just four starts and 323 minutes as a result, excluding a small cameo in the Community Shield.

Keita also featured in that season opener, but other than that has played only 63 minutes – all of which came in the Carabao Cup clash against MK Dons last week.

Due to their absences, fans are eager to see them in action at Anfield once more, with many believing they would work well in a trio alongside Fabinho. Since both Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain have enjoyed a better pass accuracy than Jordan Henderson so far, they could be correct.

The following reactions show how excited fans are by the prospect of them both starting, and with Keita coming up against a former club it could be an enjoyable evening for the Guinea international.

West Ham fans loved Antonio’s performance against Fulham

[ad_pod ]

Michail Antonio scored West Ham United’s third goal in their 3-1 win over Fulham at the London Stadium on Friday night.

And it would be fair to say that the West Ham fans were absolutely delighted with what they saw from the attacker during the Premier League clash.

Even before Antonio had scored late on, a whole host of the club’s supporters took to social media to lavish praise on the Englishman.

It has not always been that way, though, with Antonio the subject of a lot of criticism in the past.

The 28-year-old has been a regular under Manuel Pellegrini this term, however, and he has now chipped in with four Premier League goals this season.

Antonio will never be the silkiest footballer in the world, nor will he please everyone inside the stadium.

However, the West Ham fans loved his performance against Fulham, as can be seen by the Twitter reaction below:

Barcelona’s predicted starting XI vs Valencia

By their high standards, the beginning of the 2019/20 season has not really been so rosy for Barcelona.

Needless to say, they are used to winning on a consistent basis yet, so far, they’ve only tasted victory once in the first three fixtures of the new campaign. And Ernesto Valverde has also had some problems when picking his preferred lineup.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Of course, a big part of that was also caused by various injuries that somewhat messed with his plans.

Earlier this week AS claimed that Barcelona officials are optimistic that both Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi can feature in the clash, while a post on the club’s official Twitter page showing the former back on the training pitch has provided reason to suggest he’s pushing for a start. No such luck for Messi, it seems.

With all of that being said, here’s the predicted starting XI for Barcelona in a match that William Hill has them as favourites:

The goalkeeper spot picks itself as there is no chance that we’re going to see anyone else in that position other than Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The same can be said for almost the entire backline.

Jordi Alba, Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique are definite starters and have been for quite a long time. The only question mark is the right-back position but Nelson Semedo has started every game so far and it’s fair to assume he’ll start the next one as well despite a pretty poor showing in the clash against Osasuna.

The midfield and forward lines are exactly where the situation gets a bit more tricky. Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong pick themselves and we’re bound to see them both play on Saturday. The third spot, however, is still a mystery.

But given how good he was in the last game and how he completely changed Barcelona’s fortunes back then in Pamplona, we’re going to go out on a limb and say Valverde starts Arthur Melo alongside the Dutchman and the Spaniard.

Finally, the front three. Antoine Griezmann and Carles Perez will surely start since both Messi and Ousmane Dembele are still missing. But the question remains: will Valverde actually play Suarez straight after recovering from injury?

And while the question of whether he actually should is a story for another time, leaving the Uruguayan on the bench seems rather unlikely for the Ant, so we’re slotting him into the starting XI and using our Totesports promo code 2019 for him as first scorer, pushing Griezmann to the left.

Rangers beast set for contract talks

An update has emerged on Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield, regarding plans for his future at Ibrox…

What’s the talk?

According to the Glasgow Evening Times [29 January, page 47], the Gers are poised to enter contract talks with the Canada international.

His contract is up at the end of the season and the Scottish giants now want to offer him fresh terms in an attempt to keep him at the club moving forward.

GvB needs it

Gio van Bronckhorst will be buzzing with this news as he needs Arfield to put pen to paper on a contract extension before his deal expires in the summer.

The 33-year-old has dipped in and out of form this season and there have been moments where it has looked as if he needs replacing. He has lost 59% of his duels this term and missed a whopping five ‘big chances’ in front of goal, which highlights some of the issues he has had throughout the campaign.

However, just when you may think his time is up at Ibrox he pops up with another moment to show why he needs to stay. He came off the bench against Livingston earlier this week and scored the winning goal with a sublime first-time, improvised, finish into the far corner in a 1-0 win for the Gers, proving that he still has it in him to be a huge player for the club.

Earlier this month, van Bronckhorst admitted that he does not want to see the veteran leave at the end of the campaign, saying: “Scott is an important player to have around. He is definitely someone I want to have longer at Rangers.

“Hopefully we can welcome him next season as well.”

The £16k-per-week beast is still capable of producing moments of magic to win vital points for Rangers and that is why the Dutch head coach needs this key deal to go through. Arfield still has value to offer to the Light Blues and Ross Wilson must ensure that he is able to agree terms with the midfielder over a contract extension in the coming weeks and months.

Hopefully, the ex-Burnley man will continue to provide big goals to help Rangers on their way to another Premiership title and can then celebrate with the trophy and a new contract to head into the 2022/23 campaign.

Leeds: Hay drops Bamford update

Leeds United have been dealt a huge injury blow concerning Patrick Bamford.

What’s the latest?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealed that the centre-forward, who was withdrawn after just 23 minutes of the Whites’ 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, looks set to be ruled out of action for around six weeks – something that all but ends the England international’s season.

Regarding Bamford’s lastest knock, the journalist said: “Might well be season over for him.”

Marsch will be gutted

Considering the fact that Bamford has already missed nine Premier League fixtures due to an ankle injury and 11 league games as a result of a pulled hamstring this season, the news that the 28-year-old now looks set for at least another six weeks on the sidelines is sure to have left Jesse Marsch gutted.

The prolonged absence of last season’s 17-goal striker has undoubtedly contributed to the rather bleak situation in which Leeds currently find themselves – sitting just seven points above the relegation zone, with both 18th placed Watford and 19th placed Burnley having games in hand on the Whites.

Indeed, with the £18m-rated hitman managing just nine Premier League appearances so far this season, over which he has scored two goals, it is abundantly clear why Leeds have bagged 13 times fewer than after the same amount of games last term.

As such, the fact that Marsch’s side now look as if they will be without the services of the £74k-per-week forward over their final eight games of the current campaign is sure to come as a huge blow to the American manager, as, despite a relatively healthy cushion between Leeds and the drop zone, the 48-year-old will be well aware that his side are by no means out of the woods just yet.

Leeds: Pete O’Rourke makes Nahitan Nandez claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes Leeds could make a January swoop for Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez, Give Me Sport report.

The Lowdown: Nandez a long-term target

Leeds are yet to sign a central midfielder on a permanent basis under Marcelo Bielsa but are thought to be after a defensive and attacking midfielder this month due to the club’s injury woes.

One player who was linked with a move to Elland Road back in the summer was Nandez, with rumours resurfacing in recent weeks.

The 26-year-old is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt and has made 16 appearances in four different positions in 2021/22, perhaps suggesting he could solve Victor Orta’s quest for a number six and number eight in one swoop.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke was talking to Give Me Sport regarding Nandez and a possible move to Yorkshire this month.

He labelled a winter window transfer as ‘a real possibility’, with reports suggesting he could be available for half the price compared to last summer.

“I think they tried to sign him from Cagliari in the summer but weren’t able to. So, if they think they can get him on a cheaper deal this January, there’s a real possibility that they maybe could come back in for him.”

The Verdict: Time to swoop?

It seems as if Nandez is a player who has been on Orta’s shortlist for a while, so now could be the ideal time to bring him to Yorkshire.

Described as a ‘powerful’ midfielder by Serie A expert Conor Clancy, Nandez fits the Bielsa profile when it comes to being versatile.

He’d bolster the club’s wide ranks, while also being able to play in a defensive or central midfield role. That could be needed straight away, should he arrive at Elland Road, especially as Kalvin Phillips has been ruled out until March.

More updates on Nandez will more than likely emerge before the end of the month, but as like in the summer, it could be one to keep a close eye on.
