Harmison hit by shin problem

Steve Harmison’s chances of pushing for an England recall have been hit after he picked up a shin problem with concerns it could develop into a stress fracture

Cricinfo staff15-May-2009Steve Harmison’s chances of pushing for an England recall have been hit after he picked up a shin problem with concerns it could develop into a stress fracture. He is being sent to see a specialist having had similar problems earlier in his career and has certainly been ruled out of Durham’s remaining Friends Provident Trophy matches after missing the defeat against Yorkshire on Wednesday.Harmison was left out of the England squad to face West Indies after a disappointing winter where he failed to impress in India or West Indies. He played in two Tests in the Caribbean, managing four wickets at 36.75 and it has been made clear by Geoff Miller what is expected of him as a strike bowler. However, his form this season has been unconvincing and since taking 4 for 76 in the opening Championship match against Yorkshire he has collected just four wickets.

Newcastle: Isaac Hayden a shining light vs Wolves

Newcastle’s disappointing start to the 2021/22 campaign continued as they lost 2-1 to Wolves at Molineux in the Premier League on Saturday.

Steve Bruce’s side sit in the relegation zone heading into the second international break of the season, with zero wins to their name in the league after seven matches.

Hee-Chan Hwang scored both goals for Wolves as he won the three points for Bruno Lage’s side, with a brilliant long-range equaliser from Jeff Hendrick sandwiched in between his strikes.

Despite the worrying nature of Newcastle’s performance, one player – in particular – caught the eye with his display in the middle of the park – Isaac Hayden.

The defensive midfielder was a shining light in a dim afternoon for the Magpies, as he was one of only two Newcastle players to manage a SofaScore rating of 7.0 or higher – alongside Matt Ritchie – with the rest of the side evidently struggling.

Defensively, he was almost flawless. Per SofaScore, he won an outstanding 83.33% of his duels on the pitch as he won ten of 12 ground battles. He made one clearance, one interception and an impressive four tackles, as he showed off his defensive quality.

This shows that he was able to cope with the physicality of the Wolves midfield and win his individual battles, although he was let down by his teammates in that regard. Sean Longstaff lost ten of his 14 duels and Hendrick lost four of six, suggesting that they were unable to deal with Wolves’ strength in 50/50’s in the same way Hayden was able to.

On the ball, Hayden had 60 touches of the ball and completed three of four attempted dribbles, helping Newcastle in transition. However, he did let himself down at times with his passing as he completed 63% of those he attempted. The midfield powerhouse could have been more reliable in possession, but that could be put down to a lack of options from his teammates going forward.

Overall, though, Hayden enjoyed a positive afternoon individually as Newcastle struggled as a collective.

Bruce, however, will surely be delighted with his midfielder’s display. If he can continue to perform to that level whilst his teammates catch up with him then that could help the Magpies to start climbing up the table.

Ex-Leeds ace drops huge claim over next three fixtures

Former Leeds United star David Norris insists that the club must start picking up points in their next three games if they are to climb out of their rut.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have yet to win a game this term, losing 5-1 to Manchester United, 3-0 to Liverpool, and 2-1 to West Ham United, while also drawing with Everton, Burnley, and Newcastle United.

Leeds take on Watford in their next game prior to the international break before taking on both Southampton and Wolves.

Watford are currently 12th, Wolves are 14th, and Southampton are 16th, the latter of which have also yet to win a game this term.

Norris insists that, at the start of the season, a number of onlookers would have backed Bielsa’s side to potentially take maximum points from the three games.

However, he believes that those within the club will panic if the club cannot take at least seven points from the fixtures.

He said: “If they come out of these three with a poor points return, then the panic stations will really be high.

“They’re winnable games. Southampton, Wolves and Watford, at the start of the season you’d be looking at those and thinking Leeds can get seven or nine points there.”

Agarkar and Kulkarni maintain Mumbai's advantage

Hyderabad started on the wrong foot in reply to Mumbai’s massive total, losing two early wickets after the hosts declared at 602 for 6

The Bulletin by Nagraj Gollapudi in Mumbai03-Dec-2008Hyderabad 82 for 2 (Suman 40*, Pai 35*) trail Mumbai 602 for 6 dec (Jaffer 256, Rahane 137, Agarkar 77*, MP Arjun 4-99) by 520 runs

Hyderabad started on the wrong foot in reply to Mumbai’s massive total, losing two early wickets after the hosts declared at 602 for 6. Made to sweat on the first day by Wasim Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane, Hyderabad finished the second day needing a further 371 runs to avoid the follow-on.Hyderabad picked up five wickets in the morning session. In the first over, Ashwin Yadav forced an edge from Rahane with an away-going delivery. Amol Muzumdar got off to a brisk start with a couple of fours but the switch to aggression over his usual defensive ways didn’t pay off. Muzumdar rushed into a pull shot off a short one from MP Arjun and was easily picked at square leg. After their poor display on the first day, Hyderabad’s fast bowlers exercised tighter control on Wednesday. Not wanting to throw away the overnight advantage, Jaffer and Rohit Sharma, Mumbai’s last recognised batting pair, remained patient before opening up. Once spin was introduced, immediately after the first hour, Rohit took advantage: he charged Lalith Mohan to hit him over mid-on for four. Next ball, he went for a repeat, and was beaten in the air, but made some swift adjustments to play a late cut for another four. Jaffer smartly rotated the strike to give his young partner the freedom to attack.Syed Quadri, the offspinner, was then lofted over long-on for the first six of the day. After a circumspect beginning, Rohit was fast closing in on his half-century, but his aggressive instincts led to his downfall. Trying to clear the in-field against a fuller one from Arjun, Rohit gave an easy catch to cover.Ramesh Powar was dismissed cheaply, and Hyderabad’s best moment arrived when Jaffer, who had cracked a double-century on day one, stepped out against Mohan, only to be beaten in the air. The faint edge was pouched easily behind the stumps. It was Mohan’s first wicket and he deserved it – he had frequently beaten the batsmen in the air and also off the pitch, but without reward.Hyderabad now had a chance to stop Mumbai from posting a huge total, but Ajit Agarkar spoiled those plans. Agarkar, who has two first-class hundreds, played a patient knock that featured five sixes – three over the bowler’s head. He was especially severe on Mohan and part-time bowler TS Suman, pulling and charging against them with ease. Though he missed out on getting his maiden Ranji hundred – Jaffer declared just before tea – he took Mumbai to a total out of Hyderabad’s reach.Things did not improve for Hyderabad on resumption as Dhawal Kulkarni stuck first-ball: Ravi Teja went for an unnecessary cut, straight into the safe hands of Rahane at gully. Rushi Raj, who replaced the injured VVS Laxman, did not last long as he feathered an edge to a delivery outside off stump. It was left for Suman to arrest the downfall. He showed enough character to remain unruffled despite the pressure Mumbai applied. Once the nerves settled, he hit two consecutive fours past midwicket off Usman Malvi. A couple of overs later, he stepped out to hit a straight six off a flighted one by Powar. When Malvi pitched on his legs, Suman clipped it over the square-leg for another six. It is still along way for Hyderbad, who need a long vigil from Suman and the rest to remain in the safe zone.

Levy readying Spurs bid to sign Traore

According to Spanish news outlet Diario AS, Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo personally wants to sign Adama Traore for his new club and it is believed chairman Daniel Levy is now ‘preparing an offer’.

The Lowdown: Spurs in attacker hunt…

As well as new defenders, Spurs have been tipped to add to their forward line this summer as August 31 fast approaches.

The likes of Dusan Vlahovic and Lautaro Martinez have been linked as out-and-out striker additions while Denmark sensation Mikkel Damsgaard has been repeatedly mentioned alongside Spurs too.

Now, as per this report from Spain, it appears Levy and Nuno have their sights set on yet another attacking target.

The Latest: Spurs ‘preparing an offer’ for Traore

As per Diario AS, the Lilywhites boss personally wants to reunite with his former favourite player at Wolves and is eager to sign him for Spurs this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Molineux side have slapped a €40 million (£34.1m) price tag on his head amid Tottenham’s interest but it is believed Levy and Nuno ‘preparing an offer’ around that amount to ‘take over the player’.

AS also believe that Wolves plan to use that money for their own transfer plans as they plot a swoop for Valencia forward Goncalo Guedes.

The Verdict: Unmissable opportunity?

Nuno himself never held back in his praise for the ‘amazing’ player during his time in the Midlands (The Athletic), and given Traore’s ridiculous price drop when compared to last year, it could be an unmissable opportunity to sign him for just £34.1m.

Fabrizio Romano, writing for Calciomercato in October 2020, stated that Wolves valued him at around €100 million (£85.3m) – with that figure now allegedly dropping by more than half.

The 25-year-old still has plenty of years at the very top level in his locker and nobody completed more successful dribbles per 90 in the Premier League than him (4.1) over 2020/2021 (WhoScored).

He could prove to be a real bargain and Nuno already knows exactly how to get the very best out of him.

Marsh makes his own mark

Shaun Marsh’s unbeaten 69 was his third half-century in seven ODIs © AFP

Shaun Marsh’s first two one-day internationals at home could hardly have gone any better. Having made a success of his debut ODI series in the West Indies this year, Marsh has continued his excellent form with a pair of half-centuries in Darwin but he knows he is no certainty to retain his place when Matthew Hayden returns from injury.Marsh’s 76 in the opening game was followed by a confident unbeaten 69 that earned him the Man-of-the-Match award in the second contest as Australia cruised past Bangladesh’s 117 with 27 overs to spare. First in the Caribbean and now in Australia he has forged a promising opening partnership with Shane Watson. It is a combination that could be the future for Australia’s one-day team. In the short-term, the return of Hayden from a persistent heel injury, probably for the series in India, will force the selectors to choose between Marsh and Watson for the second opening slot.”Hopefully I can get a few one-dayers when the season starts in Australia when we play South Africa and New Zealand,” Marsh said. “I’ve just got to keep working hard and keep playing well for Western Australia. The season starts there soon so I’ve just got to keep working hard on that.”Marsh has averaged 50.50 from his first seven one-day internationals and against Bangladesh he has found gaps and regularly scored boundaries while taking few risks. It is a skill that is in high demand among opening batsmen and he is a more attacking type than his father Geoff, the former Australia player.”I take after my mum a bit, she was always left-handed at whatever she did,” Marsh said. “I’ve probably got a few more shots than the old man.”Marsh has noticed a major improvement in his own batting in the past year, a period during which he averaged more than 60 in the Pura Cup and took the Indian Premier League by storm by topping its run tally. He is one of several men who have impressed the stand-in captain Michael Clarke during the Darwin series.”There’s been some great individual performances,” Clarke said. “Shaun Marsh has been on fire. He batted really well in the first game and backed it up today. Guys have an opportunity to either cement their spot in the team or push for selection when guys come back from injury and I think a few of our guys are certainly doing that.”Bangladesh could have had Marsh run out on 5 when he drove to mid off, set off for a single and collided mid-pitch with the bowler Shahadat Hossain. Both men ended up in a messy tangle on the turf and the fielder Nazmul Hossain decided against throwing at the stumps, where Marsh would have been well short. There were echoes of the Ryan Sidebottom-Grant Elliott crash at The Oval this year, when England ran Elliott out and their captain Paul Collingwood was widely criticised for not calling him back. On this occasion Nazmul erred on the side of caution.”When he saw the collision he decided against throwing it because he saw them on the ground and he thought he might hit the batsman or the bowler,” Mohammad Ashraful, the Bangladesh captain, said. “We play within the spirit of cricket and this was one of those instances. There was a very good run-out opportunity there and he decided against throwing it.”Ashraful would have loved one of his batsmen to show the assuredness of Marsh but he conceded the side’s confidence took a pounding following Saturday’s 180-run loss. Dhiman Ghosh’s entertaining 30 and the tight bowling of Mashrafe Mortaza were positives for Bangladesh but to Ashraful the eight-wicket defeat was just as disappointing as the first failure.”We are a much better team than this,” he said. “We can play much better cricket. We are just not being able to do that at the moment.”

Milivojevic out for Palace v Brentford

New Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira will be looking to pick up his first points in charge of the Eagles when they host newly-promoted Brentford this afternoon.

The Frenchman’s reign in south London got off to a poor start when the Eagles were seen off 3-0 by Chelsea last weekend, but he may be confident of a better result this time around.

What’s the word?

Palace had to cope without several first team players for their trip to Stamford Bridge last weekend, and Vieira confirmed that club captain Luka Milivojevic will also play no part in today’s clash.

“Luka is not gonna be available. He had his personal reason,” the manager revealed in Friday’s press conference.

The absence of their talismanic midfielder will be a big blow for the capital club, but there is some positive fitness news as James Tomkins and summer signing Joachim Andersen are available for selection.

“James trained the last couple of days with the group, so he will be involved in the game tomorrow,” said Vieira, who admitted that Andersen’s return to action will offer greater flexibility, stating: “Yeah, that will. Having those players getting fitter – it’s nice for Joachim to play half an hour. His first game since the Euros, that will give options and flexibility at the back.”

Vieira also confirmed that Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher is in line to make his competitive debut for Palace after being unable to play against his parent club on the opening weekend of the season. The Eagles boss said: “Yeah, he’s going to be in the squad. Obviously looking forward to Conor’s first game for us. Will bring us different strengths. Had a really good week, so he will be in the squad.”

Vieira will be gutted over Milivojevic

Despite the positive news surrounding Tomkins, Andersen and Gallagher, Vieira must be gutted to be without his captain and midfield general Milivojevic.

The Serbia international offers stability and a solid base for the Eagles from which to build in the middle of the park, attributes which were desperately missing from their performance last time out against Chelsea. His tackling average of 2.1 per game last season, the fourth-highest in the squad, set the tone from the midfield engine room.

It should be a memorable afternoon for Vieira, who is taking charge of his first home game as a Premier League manager, and he’ll be hoping to mark the occasion with a positive result. It may be harder to obtain without Milivojevic, though.

Pundit: Tielemans is more important to Leicester than Maddison

Steve Howey believes losing Youri Tielemans would come as a bigger blow to Leicester City than seeing James Maddison depart this summer.

Belgium international midfielder Tielemans, who scored the winner as the Foxes got their hands on the FA Cup for the first time in their history in May, has been attracting interest from Liverpool.

Reports published by Belgian media outlet Voetbal24 suggest the 24-year-old is keen to leave Leicester for Anfield.

However, Brendan Rodgers’ side have made keeping Tielemans, who has two years remaining on his current deal, a priority this summer and they are eager for him to pen a new contract.

Meanwhile, creative midfielder Maddison is being courted by Arsenal, with the Gunners looking to bounce back after a disappointing season which means they will not be involved in European football for the first time since 1995.

Howey, the former Leicester defender, feels the Foxes would be more inclined to let Maddison depart instead of Tielemans.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “Tielemans would be the bigger loss, for me.

“Maddison is an excellent player but I think there were a couple of issues off the field last season. We all make mistakes, so I haven’t got a problem with that.

“Sometimes players just feel as though they could do with a move to give their career another spark. He might fall into that category. But, if I were him, it would have to be a very good offer from a very good club to tempt me away from Leicester.”
