West Ham fans ‘should be excited’ by Newman

Reacting to an official announcement by the club, reliable West Ham United reporter Roshane Thomas of The Athletic says ‘supporters should be excited’ by new head of recruitment Rob Newman.

The Lowdown: Newman era begins…

On Friday, West Ham confirmed a new era of transfers as they appointed former Manchester City chief Newman to oversee their recruitment and scouting strategy moving forward.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The former Sky Blues executive, who played a hand in signing the likes of Aymeric Laporte whilst at Eastlands, will now try his hand at improving West Ham’s fortunes in the transfer market.

While the Irons enjoyed a fairly productive summer window, bringing in four senior internationals, they still faltered in their bid to sign a striker.

Reacting to Newman’s appointment, Thomas has now dropped a claim on the new West Ham employee.

The Latest: Thomas makes Newman claim…

Taking to Twitter, sharing a previous article on the 57-year-old, the reliable journalist says ‘supporters should be excited’ by his appointment.

Reminding fans of what he can bring to the role, Thomas has relayed his piece from August explaining that Newman also had some involvement in signing the likes of Brahim Diaz, Angelino and Pablo Maffeo for Man City.

Moyes has also stated on ‘numerous occasions’ that he wants to sign young players with re-sale value as well as senior players and it appears West Ham’s new man will certainly help him do that.

The Verdict: Time to celebrate?

This big off-field development will certainly boost West Ham in terms of tackling the transfer market with even more vigour and efficiency.

Newman’s experience in Manchester, working alongside big City transfer figureheads like Txiki Begiristain, James Smith, Brian Marwood and Gary Worthington, will now be transferred to the London Stadium in a major boost for Moyes.

Leeds must start Summerville vs Crewe

While Leeds United may not have had the greatest starts to the Premier League season, they will be hopeful of tasting their first victory of the new campaign when they take on Crewe Alexandra in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side come into the game off the back of a 2-2 draw against Everton on Saturday, and the Whites boss will surely be ringing the changes to give a few youngsters and fringe players the chance to shine.

One starlet who Bielsa should be looking to unleash tonight is Crysencio Summerville.

Described as a “bag of tricks” by Chris Powell – his former coach when he was a teenager at Dutch side ADO Den Haag – the 19-year-old scored a hat-trick against Burnley on just his second start for the under-23s last season.

In total, he bagged an impressive six goals and provided a further six assists in just 12 Premier League 2 games, netting in the final game of the campaign.

Against Guiseley during pre-season, it was Summerville who put in the kind of performance which will have given Bielsa some food for thought.

After watching his goal-scoring display, Leeds Live’s Joe Donnohue said on Twitter: “Cody Drameh and Crysencio Summerville were great together down the right flank for Leeds’ U23s last season. Seems like more of the same this year. Drameh an excellent carrier, weightless going forward. Summerville a wriggler, impossible to handle.”

The 19-year-old is an exciting winger who can play on either flank, and while he might be diminutive in stature at just 5 foot 9, he more than makes up for it with his quick feet and agility, much like Leeds talisman Raphinha.

Summerville himself said earlier this year: “I often hear that there are doubts because of my physical condition, but when you are on the field, you are not concerned with that. There are often big defenders in front of me, I have to be smart about that. I know I’m agile and try to play with my mind.”

The fact that the young Dutchman was named on the bench against the Toffees on Saturday, and was only brought on at half-time in the under-23s’ 4-2 defeat to Spurs, could well be an indication that he will feature tonight against Crewe.

Given how his directness and willingness to make things happen is so similar to Raphinha, Leeds fans will surely be in for a treat if he starts tonight.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped a Leeds United transfer update…

Asif's IPL drug hearing postponed

Mohammad Asif, who was due to leave on Thursday morning with his lawyer Shahid Karim for the two-day hearing, said he had been told to remain in Pakistan

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif will not be travelling to Mumbai after his IPL drugs hearing was put off due to the terror attacks in Mumbai. A tribunal, comprising former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, the former vice-chancellor of India’s Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Dr Ravi Bapat, and lawyer Shirish Gupte, had set November 29 as the date for hearing Asif’s appeal in Mumbai, after he had appeared before them on October 11.Asif, who was due to leave on Thursday morning with his lawyer Shahid Karim for the two-day hearing, said he had been told to remain in Pakistan. “After the Mumbai attacks, I called them [IPL officials] up to find out the status quo of the drugs tribunal hearing and they told me they will convey fresh dates later to me,” Asif told . “I don’t think the hearing is that important now. Whenever it is held I am confident of being cleared as we have prepared well for it.”Sunder Raman, the IPL chief executive confirmed to that the hearing had been postponed and fresh dates “will be finalised later next month”.The IPL had announced in July that Asif had tested positive for nandrolone during its first season. His B sample also showed traces of the drug but the levels varied between both samples. Karim had said the discrepancy could work to Asif’s advantage.Asif was suspended by the PCB from all forms of the game pending the result of the IPL inquiry. He previously tested positive for nandrolone just before the 2006 Champions Trophy in India. Though he was banned for one year by a PCB tribunal, the punishment was overturned a month later on appeal.

McGain and Krejza compete for spinner's spot

Australia coach Tim Nielsen indicated they are likely to field three fast bowlers and a spinner for the Tests

Australia’s two spinners in India, Bryce McGain and Jason Krejza, have just over a week to press their claims for the specialist slow bowler’s position in Australia’s Test line-up. The coach Tim Nielsen said Australia were likely to field three fast bowlers and one spinner for the opening Test, which begins in Bangalore on October 9.Australia’s attack during their previous Test series, against West Indies earlier this year, comprised Brett Lee, Stuart Clark, Mitchell Johnson, and Stuart MacGill in the first two Tests. Beau Casson stepped in for the final match following MacGill’s retirement.”I think we did a pretty reasonable job in the West Indies playing on low, flat, pretty slow wickets that spun late in the game, especially the first two Tests, with three quicks and a spinner,” Nielsen said. “So I’d expect that’s what the mix will be, I think that suits the way we play best. We’ll just have to sort out what that mix is and who our spinner is, basically.”There’s still two or three spots people are still trying to force their way into. It depends a little bit on what the Indian team is as well, whether they pick a lot of right-hand batsmen or left-hand batsmen and that might make a little bit of a difference to our spinning options.”The offspinner Krejza made a bright start to the tour, taking three wickets in a practice game against a Rajasthan Cricket Academy side in Jaipur. The legspinner McGain hasn’t had a proper bowl yet because of a shoulder problem sustained during Australia A’s tour of India earlier this month. He will get his opportunity during the tour match against a Board President’s XI in Hyderabad starting on October 2.”He’s [McGain] just finishing off [his rehabilitation], it would have been nice to get him going in the two-day game but the physio just felt if we tried to do everything in the competitive game he might be going a little too hard,” Nielsen said. “We’re trying to keep it controlled, now he should be fit and right to play in the four-day game.”Australia are without the option of Andrew Symonds’ offbreaks on this tour after he was left out of the squad. However, they can utilise the part-timers Michael Clarke, who bowls left-arm orthodox, and Simon Katich, who bowls left-arm wrist-spinners.

Moses Odubajo has a shocker as QPR slip up

Queens Park Rangers’ Championship campaign of did not get off to the best of starts on Saturday afternoon as Mark Warburton’s men were held to a 1-1 draw at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

An 11th-minute Jed Wallace strike gave Millwall the lead in the fixture before Rob Dickie levelled for the home side just after the half-hour mark.

However, despite dominating possession of the ball – 59% to be precise – taking more shots, winning more corners and stringing together nearly 150 more passes than the Lions, the home side failed to make their superiority count, with the fixture finishing all square.

Neither of QPR’s starting front two particularly impressed, with Charlie Austin and Lyndon Dykes managing just one shot on target between them, receiving SofaScore match ratings of 6.6 and 6.5 respectively, but arguably the club’s worst performer on the day was new signing Moses Odubajo.

The former England under-20 international made two key passes over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch, but in almost every other department, the 28-year-old badly let Warburton down.

Indeed, the £7.5k-per-week man was wasteful with the ball, completing just one of his four attempted crosses, one of his four attempted long balls and losing possession for his side on a whopping 17 occasions.

His metrics from a defensive standpoint do not provide any better reading, with the £630k-rated right-back winning just one of his nine duels, being dribbled past twice and conceding one foul.

All in all, Odubajo’s performance saw him earn a SofaScore match rating of 6.0, the worst of any player from either side to feature in the game.

As such, should the former Sheffield Wednesday man wish to keep his place in Warburton’s starting XI going forwards, he will undoubtedly have to improve on his debut display against Millwall, which certainly left a lot to be desired.

Under-pressure India face stern test

Instead of a dress rehearsal for the final, the contest against Sri Lanka becomes India’s chance to seal outright a place in the final

The Preview by George Binoy02-Jul-2008Match factsThursday, July 3, 2008
Start time 16.00 (local), 10.00 (GMT)
There’s no respite yet for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and he will have to find a way to beat Sri Lanka to seal a place in the final © AFP
Big PictureYounis Khan’s whirlwind 123 changes the nature of Thursday’s clash. Pakistan managed to chase a target of 309, and instead of a dress rehearsal for the final, the contest against Sri Lanka becomes India’s chance to seal outright a place in the final without waiting for the outcome of the last Super Four match between Pakistan and Bangladesh – a win then will be enough for Pakistan to go through. The batting has clicked for both India and Sri Lanka so far in the tournament but Pakistan’s performance against the two teams highlighted how undercooked India’s bowlers are. They have failed to come to grips with the flat decks in Karachi and it’s their batsmen who bailed them out in the wins against Bangladesh and Pakistan. Mahendra Singh Dhoni had complained about the gruelling schedule for his team after playing three games in four days, and they will have to bounce back less than 24 hours after the loss to Pakistan.Sri Lanka have sealed their spot in the final, and have the luxury to rest key players, something Pakistan won’t want them to do. However, they will look back to the loss to Australia in an inconsequential game last year, when they rested key bowlers for tactical reasons after having sealed their spot in the semi-finals of the World Cup – the same bowlers proved ineffective in the one-sided final.Form guide (Last five completed ODIs; most recent first)
India LWWWL
Sri Lanka WWWWLWatch out for …Ajantha Mendis, who’s had a terrific start to his international career with 14 wickets in seven ODIs at an average of 13.71 and economy-rate of 4.00. However, tomorrow’s battle against an in-form Indian batting line-up is likely to be his toughest test yet, unless Sri Lanka rest him in order to spring a surprise if they play India in the final. Yuvraj Singh hasn’t had much to do in the Asia Cup because of the top order’s consistent performances. However, he’s showed excellent touch in all three innings, scoring 48, 36 not out and 37 at over a run a ball. His form will be tested though by Sri Lanka’s strong spin attack, if both Muttiah Muralitharan and Mendis play that is.Team news
Ajantha Mendis will look to increase on his tally of 11 wickets if he does play Sri Lanka’s final Super Four match © AFP
India would have ideally rested some players but their inability to beat Pakistan makes the Sri Lanka game significant. Dhoni suffered from cramps during his 76 and even Gary Kirsten, India’s coach, has admitted the ODI captain needs a break. Dhoni, however, kept wickets during Pakistan’s chase, and with no reserve wicketkeeper, he is unlikely to switch fielding positions as he did in the Indian Premier League.India might also change their bowling combination. Remove his four-wicket haul against Hong Kong, and Piyush Chawla has been listless in the tournament. He could make way for left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who impressed in the game against Bangladesh. RP Singh could also get a look in, while Yusuf Pathan’s role will be under scrutiny after his failure with both bat and ball against Pakistan.India (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Pragyan Ojha, 11 RP Singh.Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have already qualified for the final and are likely to rest Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan as they did against UAE.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 2 Mahela Udawatte, 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Chamara Kapugedera, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Kaushalya Weeraratne, 8 Thilan Thushara, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Dilhara Fernando.Stats and trivia The head-to-head record in the last five ODIs between India and Sri Lanka is an even split, with both teams winning two each with one no result. Gambhir averages 86.50 against Sri Lanka. He’s scored 346 runs in six innings with two hundreds and a fifty against them. India’s openers – Gambhir and Sehwag – average 75.66 for the first wicket during the 2008 Asia Cup. Their effort, however, pales in comparison to that of Sri Lanka’s openers – in three innings, Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara average 113.Quotes”It is good we have a chance to play them [India] before the final. It gives the opportunity to carry on our good form in the tournament and extract more from the players … Thursday’s game would be crucial, for it will set the mood for the final.”
Trevor Bayliss, the Sri Lanka coach, feels India were be their opponents on July 6 as well.”They tried everything, whatever they had in the armoury they tried.”

Croft century drives Lancashire

Scorecard

Steven Croft celebrates his maiden first-class hundred © PA Sports

The match is well balanced at Old Trafford after two days, although a draw is an increasingly strong possibility as only six wickets fell on both days. Nottinghamshire replied strongly and positively to Lancashire’s first-innings total of 384, which was boosted by a determined century from Steven Croft, closing on 148 for 2.Resuming on 260 for 5, Lancashire’s priority was clearly to keep on amassing runs, which they did without too much concern about how long it took. This tied in well with Croft’s aim of reaching his maiden first-class century. He settled in firmly with Luke Sutton, his overnight partner, who started the day with a superb cover drive to the boundary off Charlie Shreck.Croft was working away with dedication, and finally an on-drive for four off Shreck brought him the three figures he had narrowly missed at Headingley last week. It came off 197 balls and contained few memorable strokes, but a great deal of hard work and dedication. This valuable partnership was only broken by a run-out, as the energetic Sutton sought a fourth run off a hit to the distant midwicket boundary, and was stranded in mid pitch thanks to good work out there from Matthew Wood. He made 43, rather slowly but valuably, and Lancashire were 336 for 6.Croft did not change his approach after reaching his hundred, continuing to accumulate steadily, until he was finally caught at the wicket for 122, driving at Graeme Swann. In all he faced 256 balls and hit 14 fours. This was the pattern of the Lancashire innings, which plodded on at less than three an over. The only batsmen who actually exceeded this rate were Dominic Cork (18) and Sajid Mahmood (10) in their brief innings. This approach brought them a very handy total, but it did use up a day and a half.Swann was the most successful of the Nottinghamshire bowlers, taking 3 for 78, with two wickets to both Shreck and Franks. Darren Patterson, wicketless, and Mark Ealham, with just one wicket, deserved better for their fine efforts, but luck did not go their way.Could Lancashire’s rather slow scoring be excused by a pitch that did not allow a good run rate? Nottinghamshire did not think so, as they scored their runs at about four an over for most of their truncated innings. They did begin cautiously, but the bowlers did not find much assistance from the conditions and provided width at times, and the runs began to flow.Wood fell early for 10, pushing forward to Mahmood and being caught at the wicket, while his opening partner, Will Jefferson, was just regaining confidence and showing his range of strokes when a loose slash off Oliver Newby to gully cut him off for 32. Nottinghamshire were 60 for 2 and the innings was in the balance.Adam Voges, however, joined Mark Wagh and the two shared a fluent partnership of 88, unbroken by the close. Croft, with his little medium-pacers, was the only bowler to put a brake on the scoring. To the annoyance of the crowd, the batsmen chose to take the bad light when the umpires offered it to them, despite being well set.Nottinghamshire do not always make pleasant opponents these days, and there was a distasteful incident during the morning when Shreck deliberately stood in Sutton’s way as the latter went for a quick single, almost forcing the batsman to barge him as he ran through. The umpires stepped in and spoke to the bowler and captain, and the matter may well be taken further. But this incident could have been avoided if the umpires, especially Tim Robinson who was at Shreck’s end, had stepped in earlier with one or two quiet words.Only a few minutes earlier Shreck had given Sutton some verbals, and it was not simply a case of the bowler having a bad day or getting out of bed the wrong side, as he had also shown such gratuitous aggression on the first day, apparently overlooked by the umpires then. He was not the only Nottinghamshire offender, and it was unfortunate that the umpires waited until an actual incident took place rather than reckoning that prevention was better than cure.

Pundit hopeful Takehiro Tomiyasu can be success at Tottenham

Despite being relatively unknown to Premier League followers, Paul Stewart is hopeful that incoming Tottenham defender Takehiro Tomiyasu can be a success in north London.

According to The Athletic, the Japanese centre-back is on the verge of becoming Nuno Espirito Santo’s first signing as Spurs boss, with the 22-year-old expected to sign from Serie A side Bologna.

Following a wretched campaign defensively under Jose Mourinho, Santo has taken his steps to improving his defence, with Tomiyasu able to play anywhere across the back-four.

He’s made huge strides since moving to Italy from the Belgian league and has progressed well at international level, not only racking up 22 caps for Japan, but has been named in their squad for the Tokyo Olympics.

But whilst the games will further Tomiyasu’s experience, it’s likely to rule him out of the opening few weeks of the Premier League season, with the final taking place the weekend before Tottenham host Manchester City on the opening-day.

Not many would have heard of the defender prior to his links with Spurs, but Stewart reckons he could spring a surprise.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“If Nuno’s had his guys looking at him at Wolves, then he’s making the decision. You can nick players that stand out. You only have to look at Kante from French division two.

“I’m hoping that Nuno has been looking at him for some time and was looking at him for Wolves and is now looking at him for Spurs – that’s what you would hope.”

Saints fans want Vestergaard out

Many Southampton fans are happy to see Jannik Vestergaard leave the club after it was reported that Jose Mourinho wants to take him to AS Roma.

The Saints have a big summer ahead of them as they aim to improve on their 15th-placed Premier League finish last term. They have already made one signing, with Romain Perraud joining from Brest (southamptonfc.com), but Southampton may move Danny Ings on after he turned down a new four-year contract at St Mary’s (Sky Sports).

It seems that the Saints could also be losing another key player in Vestergaard. As per The Athletic, Mourinho is looking to make the Denmark international one of his first signings in the Italian capital.

However, it seems that many Southampton fans would not be disappointed to see him depart – some have suggested that they already have a capable backup in Mohammed Salisu, and his £16.2m Transfermarkt valuation suggests that the Saints could receive a big fee from selling him.

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on Roma’s interest in the 28-year-old, who turned in some performances which met with criticism from a portion of Southampton supporters last season.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about the Vestergaard news

“I know Mourinho’s managerial career has been on the decline for a few years, but going from managing prime John Terry to Sergio Ramos to Jannik Vestergaard is probably a sign to give it up and stick to talkSPORT.”
