Harris helps South Africa A tighten grip

ScorecardPaul Harris continued to torment Bangladesh A as he took six wickets to give South Africa A a massive first-innings lead of 267. The visitors batted nearly 34 overs to set Bangladesh a target of 411 but the hosts didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing four wickets in the third evening. The overnight pair of Shamsur Rehman and Faisal Hossain added 54 for the fourth wicket before Harris had Faisal caught. The last five Bangladesh wickets added only 40 runs as they were wrapped up for 215. Shamsur kept running out of partners and was eventually out for 89, caught and bowled by Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who took two wickets. Harris wrapped up the tail to finish with 6 for 90.South Africa strengthened their position with a 60-run stand for the second wicket between Riley Rossouw and Alviro Peterson. Rossouw made a quick 68 off 91 balls and his dismissal marked the declaration.Bangladesh’s second innings performance mirrored the way they started the first. A strong second-wicket stand between Shamsur and Mehrab Hossain jnr was followed by another spurt of wickets. Harris took two of those wickets, while Vernon Philander claimed Shamsur for 57. Bangladesh have six wickets in hand and face a tough ask on the final day.

A pressão por títulos prejudicou o time neste ano?
Investimos no melhor!

A gente conversa caso a caso.

Veja a nossa base!

O investimento no Palmeiras é institucional.

West Ham eye January move for Brennan Johnson

West Ham boss David Moyes could form a devastating attacking duo by pairing Said Benrahma with Nottingham Forest starlet Brennan Johnson.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Daily Mail, the Hammers are one of a number of Premier League sides to have joined the race to sign Johnson.

It’s been suggested that if Forest receive a bid meeting their valuation, then the 20-year-old could well be sold in the upcoming January transfer window rather than in the summer too.

Imagine him and Benrahma

The forward enjoyed an impressive campaign on loan at Lincoln City in League One last season, scoring ten goals and providing a further twelve assists in the league – his displays were key as they made the play-off final, losing to Blackpool 2-1 despite him setting up a goal at Wembley.

With that canny knack of finding himself in the right place at the right time, there’s a lot to like about Johnson’s game, and he could well thrive alongside a play-maker like Benrahma in this West Ham team.

Johnson’s former manager at Forest, Sabri Lamouchi, hailed him not just as an “unbelievable player” but one with the “right mentality” too, and that will surely be music to the ears of Moyes.

His boss at Lincoln, Michael Appleton has raved about the fearlessness of the versatile attacker, saying: “Brennan has been great. He has a lot of pace and gives us directness when we look to counter. He has played in numerous positions for us. He has played as a nine, as a ten, as a central midfielder. He has never moaned and just gets on with it.”

Having two, young attacking midfielders who have both really cut their teeth in the leagues below the Premier League could see the Hammers form one of the most exciting duos in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, this man was David Moyes’ shining light vs Spurs…

Barbados collapse hands Leewards pole position

A round-up of the second day’s action in first round of the Regional Four Day Competition 2009-10

Cricinfo staff10-Jan-2010A dramatic batting collapse by Barbados handed Leeward Islands first-innings points in Kingston. Chasing Leewards’ first-innings total of 236, the Barbados openers put on 103 before a spectacular capitulation to 229 all out. The spin duo of Anthony Martin (3 for 38) and Omari Banks (2 for 41) helped themselves to the spoils, bowling well especially in the afternoon session. Opener Dale Richards and top-order batsman Kirk Edwards both scored 60 but were the only ones to show any real enterprise. Edwards struck seven fours and was instrumental in keeping the Barbados innings together. The match was still going the way of Barbados, who were 146 for 3 at lunch. But with Martin accounting for Kyle Hope and Kevin Stoute off successive deliveries, and Gavin Tonge getting Shamarh Brooks caught behind in the next over for a duck, three wickets tumbled for two runs. There was even lesser joy after tea, barring a valuable 33-run ninth-wicket stand between Edwards and Nekolai Charles, as they succumbed in the 77th over of the day. Leewards then safely navigated 15 overs to take stumps at 20 for no loss.Career-best figures from Kavesh Kantasingh spun the Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) into a formidable position against Trinidad & Tobago in Montego Bay. The 23-year-old left-arm spinner captured 6 for 29, as T&T were dismissed for 105 just over an hour after lunch, replying to CCC’s first-innings total of 234. Jason Bennett provided the early breakthrough, when he had Justin Guillen lbw for 10. But just when T&T seemed to be making headway, Kantasingh claimed three scalps in the final half-hour before lunch toleave T&T on 65 for 4. T&T captain Daren Ganga manged the highest score of 44, before the all-spin attack of Kantasingh and Ryan Austin hastened the end. CCC were left wobbling at 97 for 4 in their second essay, but opener Omar Phillips held firm with an unbeaten 51 to carry CCC to 105, before bad light and rain conspired to prompt an early close.Wavell Hinds and Donovan Pagon put in solid batting performances to hand defending champions Jamaica a healthy first-innings lead against Windward Islands in Spanish Town. Hinds top scored with 95 and Pagon managed 56, as Jamaica were dismissed for 335. The Windwards bowlers were made to toil long and hard and sloppy fielding did not help. Pagon, who began the day on 9, kept the Jamaica innings together, in the early stages. He played the anchor role in partnerships with captain Tamar Lambert and Brendan Nash, hitting eight fours during his 115-ball stay. Jamaica had slipped to 151 for 5, when Pagon was stumped on the second attempt by wicketkeeper Lyndon James off Rawl Lewis, but Hinds and Dave Bernard jnr consolidated with a 78-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Hinds though, missed out on three figures after he was bowled by Keon Peters. Andrew Richardson then strengthened the Jamaica’s grip on the match, when he removed Devon Smith for a duck, as Windwards reached 19 for 1 at stumps.

Newcastle: Howe must axe Schar

Newcastle failed to build on any momentum a 1-0 win over Burnley gave them as they were hammered 4-0 by Leicester on Sunday.

The Magpies were torn to shreds by the Foxes in the second half as they conceded three goals from the 56th minute onwards, having gone 1-0 down in the first-half after Jamaal Lascelles was adjudged to have fouled James Maddison in the box.

Eddie Howe’s team are 19th in the Premier League table after 16 games and have only won one match all campaign, whilst they have also conceded the most goals (34) in the division.

Axe him

One player who struggled against Leicester was central defender Fabian Schar, who has had a difficult season at St. James’ Park.

He failed to make a single block, interception or tackle in the 90 minutes, whilst losing two of his three duels on the ground. The centre-back only completed 67% of his attempted passes and lost possession of the ball a whopping 24 times in total.

This came after he struggled badly in the win over Burnley. As per SofaScore, he lost 11 of his 13 duels and only completed 42% of his attempted passes. He also gave the ball away 20 times and made one block, whilst failing to make a tackle or interception.

Over the course of the season so far, he has lost the ball 110 times in seven Premier League appearances, whilst averaging just 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game. He has found a teammate with an abysmal 66% of his passes overall, showing that he has been dreadful with the ball at his feet this season with his failure to find the right colour shirt with his passing.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe recently admitted that he has been a fan of Schar from afar and claimed that he is a ‘fantastic’ player.

He said: “I have been an admirer of Fabian from afar for a long, long time. I think he’s a fantastic footballer.

“He has also shown his defensive resilience and mentality to not want to concede.”

This suggests that he believes there is a good player in there and axing him from the team for a few matches could benefit him. It could give him time to get back to 100% and be ready to come back into the XI and start showing why Howe thinks he is a ‘fantastic’ defender.

In the 2018/19 campaign, Schar averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.14 and made 5.3 tackles and interceptions per game at centre-back for the Magpies. This level of form may be what Howe is referring to with his comments, but his form this season is a far cry from this and that is why he should be brutally axed from the team, for now.

Vasilis Barkas set for January exit

Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas is set for a move away from Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Giannis Chorianopoulos, with the journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that the 27-year-old shot-stopper looks to be on his way out of Parkhead, with the Bhoys looking to part ways with the Greek international this winter on either a temporary or permanent basis.

In his tweet, Chorianopoulos said: “Vasilis Barkas is about to leave from Celtic [in] January. On loan or permanent.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how little Barkas has featured for Celtic since his £4.5m move to Glasgow in the summer of 2020, in addition to, when the goalkeeper has featured, how poor the Greece international has looked for the club, the news that the shot-stopper is set to move onto pastures new this January will undoubtedly leave Celtic fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 15 Scottish Premiership appearances last season, the £2.52m-rated ‘keeper made an average of just one save and conceded 0.7 goals per game.

These returns saw the 27-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore rating of a mere 6.79, ranking him as the Bhoys’ joint ninth-worst performer in the top flight of Scottish football.

As a result of these disappointing performances, Celtic made a move to sign Joe Hart in the summer transfer window, with the former England international’s arrival all but confirming the end of Barkas’ career at Parkhead – with the shot-stopper having made just one appearance under Ange Postecoglou this season.

As such, considering the fact that the Greek international is still collecting his £9k-per-week wage in Glasgow, despite appearing to have very little chance of featuring for the Hoops once again, the news that Celtic are planning to offload the goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window is undoubtedly positive for the club – as Barkas is rather stealing a living at present.

Tottenham: Martinez would be keen to join

Lautaro Martinez would be ‘really interested’ in a move to Tottenham Hotspur, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT.

The lowdown

The 24-year-old Inter marksman has scored six goals in 10 Serie A starts this season. Overall, he has bagged 55 goals and provided 21 assists in 148 appearances for the Nerazzurri (via Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sky Sports reported during the summer that Spurs were willing to shell out £60m to secure Martinez’s signature, but his value may now have risen further after he penned a new £5m-per-year contract last month. Nevertheless, Jones has said that the Argentine is ‘someone they’re going to look back towards in January’.

According to FBRef, Martinez’s profile is similar to that of Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, Chelsea’s Timo Werner and Juventus’ Alvaro Morata.

The latest

Jones told GIVEMESPORT that Martinez intends to test himself in England and reckons that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could be an appealing destination.

The journalist said: “He’s got eyes on getting to the Premier League and I think that he would be really interested to join Spurs.”

The verdict

It looks as if Spurs may still be drawing up a succession plan for Harry Kane, who was of course the subject of serious interest from Manchester City in the summer.

Martinez isn’t the only Serie A striker with whom Spurs have been closely linked in recent days, as Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic has also been named as a target.

At 24 and 21 respectively, and with both boasting rich scoring records in the Italian top flight, they both seen to have the credentials to lead the line for Spurs in the long-term.

Indeed, Martinez features on the list of nominees for this year’s Ballon D’Or after helping Inter to the Serie A title, so imagine what a coup it would be for Conte to bring him to north London.

In other news, Fabio Paratici has made this exciting plea.

Spurs make Brozovic approach

As per a report in the paper edition of Tuttosport, via Sport Witness, there has been a development in Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Inter Milan star Marcelo Brozovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing move…

The Croatia international is yet another one of Antonio Conte’s former Nerazzurri men who he personally wants to bring to north London alongside defender Stefan de Vrij.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As per recent updates, the 52-year-old wants Brozovic at Tottenham with TUTTOmercatoWEB even claiming that he is ‘ready’ to welcome the player with ‘open arms’.

This comes amid his 2022 contract situation at the San Siro, and despite Brozovic himself admitting he would like to extend, Tottenham and many other clubs are waiting in the wings ready to take full advantage if talks break down.

The Latest: Spurs make approach…

As per Tuttosport (via SW), Tottenham are one of the many clubs to make an approach to the player’s representatives alongside Manchester United, París Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and even Newcastle United.

It is also believed that one of these clubs may have already offered Brozovic an €8 million-per-year (£6.7m) salary, which roughly translates to around £129,000-per-week.

The Verdict: What Spurs need?

Surprisingly, despite being a traditionally more defensive player, the 29-year-old could come as a temporary solution to fill the Christian Eriksen-shaped void.

The 70-cap star was remoulded as a playmaker at Inter last season whilst superstar duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were the only Tottenham players to match or better some of his creative stats in their respective leagues.

Brozovic averaged the same amount of key passes per 90 in the final third as Kane (1.4) over 2020/2021 whilst racking up six assists, highlighting how he could make an impact for Tottenham further forward (WhoScored).

Former Inter Milan and Udinese boss Andrea Stramaccioni described Brozovic as a ‘very precious’ player for the Serie A giants and we believe he could become just as important under Conte in the Premier League.

Sri Lanka A prevail in high-scorer despite Umar heroics

Mahela Udawatte and Chamara Kapugedera lifted Sri Lanka A to a huge total before another supreme knock from Umar Akmal drew the Pakistanis close

Cricinfo staff27-Jul-2009
Scorecard
It was a day of big hundreds as Mahela Udawatte and Chamara Kapugedera lifted Sri Lanka A to a huge total batting first, before another supreme knock from Umar Akmal drew the Pakistanis close. The visitors narrowly missed out in the high-scorer at the Welagedera Stadium, which would have been a big confidence booster ahead of the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka which gets underway on Thursday.Sri Lanka A were off to a horror start once captain Thilina Kandamby opted to bat. Abdul Razzaq struck with the first two balls of the match to send back Upul Tharanga and Kaushal Silva. Sri Lanka A though, mounted a superb recovery as Udawatte and Kandamby put on 114 for the third wicket. Udawatte was at his imperious best during his 135-ball knock, which included 19 fours and two sixes. Kapugedera joined Udawatte in the 20th over, and from then on it was Sri Lanka A all the way. Kapugedera hit six fours and two sixes during his 91-ball stay, and compounded Pakistan’s misery further by putting on a massive 222-run stand for the fourth wicket with Udawatte. Both batsmen were dismissed by Razzaq who finished with 4 for 70.Dilhara Fernando and Farveez Maharoof buoyed by their team’s big score, rattled the Pakistani top order during the chase. The visitors had slipped to 29 for 3 before Shahid Afridi (34) and Fawad Alam (85) kept them in with a chance. Following their dismissals, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan failed to kick on and that left the lower order with too much to do.But that did not worry Umar, who smashed seven fours and three sixes in a mature display. The 19-year-old grew in confidence through his strokeplay and was lent support by Razzaq, who stroked a blitzkrieg 56 off 29 balls, that pushed Sri Lanka A all the way. But lightning struck twice, with Maharoof and Fernando doing the damage towards the end, as Umar was left stranded on an unbeaten century.
