Jayawardene, spinners shine in warm-up win

Sri Lanka’s top order made the most of their practice game against Emerging Cape Cobras, before their spinners got a good work-out to seal a 78-run win at Brackenfell Sports Field

Sri Lanka’s top order made the most of their practice game against Emerging Cape Cobras, before their spinners got a good work-out to seal a 78-run win at Brackenfell Sports Field. The fixture was not on the original tour itinerary, but was added on a request made by the Sri Lankan team management. Batting first, Sri Lanka lost their captain Tillakaratne Dilshan cheaply, but were stabilised by a 123-run second wicket stand between Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga. Jayawardene had endured a barren Test series, and his poor run seemed set to continue when he offered opening bowler Brendan Young a return catch, but it was put down.Jayawardene capitalised with 74 at better than run-a-ball, while Tharanga chipped in with a half-century in his first game on the tour. Thereafter, the Sri Lankans were propped up by chirpy cameos from the youngsters in the middle order – Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal. Legspinner Alistair Gray slowed down the visitors with three strikes in the middle overs, but Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis slogged efficiently, striking three sixes between them to the push the score to 296 for 9.The Emerging Cape Cobras’ chase got off to a poor start when they lost their biggest name, Richard Levi, for a duck in Malinga’s opening over. Gray, the other opener, continued to have a good game, though. He made 93 off 126 balls to keep the home team in the hunt, but the spinners made frequent incisions at the other end. Mendis and Rangana Herath accounted for six of the victims as ECC’s chase lost steam to collapse from 127 for 2 to 218 all-out.Sri Lanka play the first of five ODIs against South Africa on January 11 in Paarl.

Victoria ride on Hussey hundred

A century from David Hussey put Victoria on top on the first day at the MCG, where the unbeaten Queensland struggled to contain the hosts’ top order

ScorecardDavid Hussey was unbeaten on 119 at stumps•Getty ImagesA century from David Hussey put Victoria on top on the first day at the MCG, where the unbeaten Queensland struggled to contain the hosts’ top order. The openers Rob Quiney and Chris Rogers dominated early with a 133-run stand and by the close of play, Victoria had reached 4 for 340 with Hussey unbeaten on 119 and Andrew McDonald on 41.Their partnership had reached 86 after Cameron White was caught behind for 21 off the bowling of Nathan Reardon. Queensland’s leading fast bowler Ben Cutting bowled only nine overs for the day and was believed to be suffering from back soreness after spending much of the past week bowling in the nets at the Gabba trying to win a Test spot.Cutting did collect the wicket of Aaron Finch, whose disappointing season continued with a duck when he was trapped lbw. Quiney and Rogers seemed to enjoy the midday start, both posting half-centuries after White won the toss and chose to bat.Rogers and Quiney are both among the top four run scorers in the Shield so far this summer, Rogers’ 62 taking him to second place and Quiney’s 87 placing him fourth. Rogers was caught behind off the pace of Matthew Gale and Quiney missed the chance for a hundred when he edged behind off Reardon.

van Wyk eyes slot in South Africa top order

Morne van Wyk wants to challenge for a position in South Africa’s top three in limited-overs formats of the game

Firdose Moonda11-Jul-2011Morne van Wyk wants to challenge for a position in South Africa’s top three in limited-overs formats of the game. The 32-year old believes that he “still has a lot of cricket” left in him and could fill the much debated wicketkeeper position.van Wyk, who has been playing first-class cricket for 14 years, was a member of the 2011 South African World Cup squad that crashed out in the quarter-finals to New Zealand. He was selected as a back-up wicketkeeper and played in five of the team’s seven matches, although he batted in the lower middle-order on all but one occasion. He opens the batting at franchise level and he has a List A average of over 40.”I’m a top-order batsman and that’s where the team gets the best out of me,” van Wyk told ESPNcricinfo. “If I bat higher up for the national team will also open up a spot for an extra allrounder, like Faf du Plessis, or a bowler lower down the order.”The brittleness of South Africa’s middle order was exposed during the World Cup and there was criticism over the lack of a traditional big-hitting allrounder at No.7. The balance of the team was further complicated by the fitness of AB de Villiers, which determined how many matches he could ‘keep in. With the additional burden of captaincy and repeated back problems, it’s unclear whether de Villiers will be up to the trio of tasks.Since no long-term replacement for Mark Boucher has been found, van Wyk believes the time is right for him to step in. “I understand that I am definitely behind AB and I am happy to be his back-up,” he said. “It will come down to whether he wants to keep or spread the workload.” If it is the latter, van Wyk thinks his skills as a top-order batsman will put him a step above other glovemen in the country. “I think I am in a different boat to guys like Heino Kuhn and Thami Tsolekile.”Both Kuhn and Tsolekile have been identified as potential keepers for the national team but bat in the middle order, where the likes of du Plessis, Robin Peterson and Albie Morkel will probably play. The addition of an allrounder will assist in balancing the team and van Wyk thinks he can slot it higher up, where his record is better. van Wyk has batted at No. 3 in nine of the 13 ODIs he has played in. He has scored all three of his ODI half-centuries in that position and averages 34.22 in that position compared to 27.58 lower down the order.South Africa’s current top three of Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis, has only one certainty – Amla. Smith has been in miserable form for the past season and, after stepping down from the limited-overs captaincy, is no longer assured of his berth. If Kallis were to discover the elixir of life, he would be the first name on the South Africa team sheet forever, but the realities are starker. The term being used to discuss how Kallis will continuing to participate in cricket at the highest-level is “manage.” It means the allrounder will be phased out gently in order to his prolong his career. While the specifics have not been talked about, it’s likely that Kallis will miss out on smaller series and possibly start playing fewer ODIs.Although it will be impossible to replace the experience of Kallis, someone like van Wyk, who has been around the circuit for almost as long, could ease the transition. van Wyk is a senior player at the Knights franchise, where he “feels part of the machinery.” He has played there for the duration of his career and has “been a part of the growth of some of the younger guys, which has been nice.”Despite his age, van Wyk does not see himself as being in the twilight years of his career. “We have this epidemic in South Africa, where once you reach 30, people think you should be shipped out.” He compared it with Australia, where cricketers have longer careers and said the same should be applied in South Africa, particularly if a player is still fit and hungry like he is. “I am more keen to play international cricket now than I have ever been because I’ve had a taste of it.”

'Tried exceedingly hard to reach out to Gayle' – Hilaire

Chris Gayle has said he had written off IPL 2011 and was getting ready to resume international duties before being dropped from the West Indies team for the series against Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Apr-2011WICB chief Ernest Hilaire has said the board worked “exceedingly hard” to reach out to Chris Gayle before leaving him out of the West Indies squad for the first two one-dayers against Pakistan. Hilaire’s statements were in response to Gayle, who had earlier said the board hadn’t communicated with him before making their decision. Gayle is currently playing in the IPL, where he started off his 2011 campaign with a sparkling ton for Royal Challengers Bangalore, while West Indies are down 0-2 in the five-match series against Pakistan.”We can dispel all that Chris [Gayle] said by releasing the letters and emails,” Hilaire told the . “But we should not do that. You communicate with a player, you ask for his opinions, you ask for him to account on certain statements he made, you ask him what’s his position on certain things and you expect to be treated with a certain degree of confidence.”You expect when the coach pulls a player aside and speaks to him there is a certain level of respect for that conversation. And against that background I’m not going to try to prove Chris Gayle wrong. What’s more important is to state that we’re very disappointed in the way in Chris has decided to respond. I think he is being ill-advised. We’ve worked exceedingly hard to reach out to Chris – numerous attempts – letters, phone calls, emails. He is being advised and he will act in the way in which he sees best.”Hilaire revealed that the WICB had decided to allow Gayle to play in the IPL, since it did not want to deny him the opportunity. “We’ve stated – it is not that we do not want the players to earn a living,” Hilaire said. “We want them to earn a living but we also want them to honour their commitment to West Indies cricket. So we spoke to [Kieron] Pollard, [Dwayne] Bravo and Chris.”Last October when the three players did not sign the retainer contracts, we wrote to them and said ‘tell us what the issues are so we can address it moving forward’,” Hilaire said. “We had some exchanges, a couple of constructive ones, one not very constructive but we decided we were going to continue to engage the players. We did not want a situation where we pick the players to play for West Indies and they miss out on IPL, they are then bitter, disappointed, they wish they were at IPL. We would not benefit, they would not benefit.”Two of the players [Pollard and Bravo] were very cooperative, very supportive, that they can work out an arrangement with us where they can meet their commitments to West Indies cricket as far as the selectors would want them to but also get a chance to play in the IPL.”It did not exactly work out with Chris but when the point came and he said he was not available for selection, we did give him the NOC because it is not about revenge, it is not about denying him the opportunity.”Pollard, normally a first-choice pick in West Indies’ limited-overs’ squads, is currently playing in the IPL for Mumbai Indians. Bravo, who missed all but one game in the World Cup with injury, is playing for West Indies, but is set to miss the Test leg of the Pakistan tour to play in the IPL.

“It did not exactly work out with Chris, but when the point came and he said he was not available for selection, we did give him the NOC because it is not about revenge, it is not about denying him the opportunity.”Ernest Hilaire

Hilaire said the board was under the impression that Gayle was undergoing rehabilitation, and would be available to play Pakistan once he was fully fit. “We said to Chris repeatedly that as far as we are concerned you’re injured, you’re doing a rehabilitative programme, and that when you’re finished we want you tested and if you’re available we’ll pick you to play for West Indies,” Hilaire said. “If you don’t want to play we have no difficulty in giving you the NOC once you say you’re not available for selection, and he said he was not available for selection and we gave him the NOC.Hilaire defended the wholesale changes in the side – apart from Gayle, other seniors like Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul have also been left out – saying it was done with the intention of sparking a revival in the team’s fortunes.”If you look at West Indies cricket since the mid-90s a lot of the systems we had in place broke down,” Hilaire said. “There’s no discipline, there’s no application. We’ve been doing that for 15 years and we’ve been losing.”We need to put a new system in place. No one man is bigger than the team, no one man is such a superstar he can decide if he is training today, if he’s going to have treatment tomorrow, if he’s going to attend a team meeting. It cannot work that way.”So [the WICB] does not tell the selectors who to pick, we’ve said to the selectors that we want a team, we don’t want the whole team to surround one or two superstars so that if the superstars fail then everything collapses. We depend on two or three people to excel for us to win and if they don’t excel we lose. We don’t want that.”

Maynard finds a home at Surrey

Tom Maynard, who walked away from Glamorgan – citing the treatment of his father, Matthew, as the reason – in December, will continue his career with Surrey after signing a three-year contract with them.Maynard has made clear his anger at events at the county last year, and though new captain and South Africa batsman Alviro Petersen contacted him and the two held “a positive discussion” about his future, he has moved ahead with his decision to pursue a new employer.Maynard had feared that Glamorgan would attempt to fight his decision to leave in the courts – he signed a three-year contract with them in September last year before the county’s troubles came to a head – and in December told the : “I have to follow due process in all these events and do things by the book. I have to make sure I am clear with Glamorgan before I can move on and weigh up options from other counties but time is against me with only two months to go until pre-season.”It now appears his “continual” requests to be released and allowed to talk to other counties have been heeded, and his presence at Surrey will undoubtedly strengthen a youthful batting line-up – particularly in limited-overs cricket. Aside from the costs associated to his three year deal, Maynard’s signing comes at no extra expense to Surrey.”Once we received permission from Glamorgan to speak to Tom, it became clear that Surrey was his preferred destination,” said Surrey’s Professional Cricket Manager, Chris Adams. “He has been attracted here by a number of factors including the wicket at the Kia Oval and the fantastic history of the Club but most of all he had a sense of wanting to be at Surrey through what will be a very exciting time here.”We were painfully on the receiving end of what he is capable of last season and although this was not a signing we had planned for, it was an opportunity that was too good not to take and I am delighted that Tom is adding further depth to what is looking like a very strong squad.””I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Surrey County Cricket Club at such an exciting time and am looking forward to playing with some highly regarded young talent as well as soaking up as much as I can from the richly experienced and successful coaching staff,” added Maynard.”Tom is one of the best One Day cricketers going around and exactly the sort of player we have been hoping to attract to the Club,” said Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown. “It’s hugely exciting to have him at the Kia Oval and I know he will make an impact both on the field and in the dressing room.”

West Ham: Insider makes big Watkins claim

West Ham United boss David Moyes is desperate to sign a new striker target as news emerges on Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins, as per insider reports.

The Lowdown: Irons eye striker…

The Irons and Moyes, reportedly convinced that Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata had signed in the late hours of January, thereby ending West Ham’s long search for a forward, were left bitterly disappointed (The Evening Standard).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Phone calls to the Colombian’s representatives were unanswered with the 31-year-old going AWOL, leaving Moyes stranded without a senior back-up option for the second half of 2021/2022.

Their quest to add a new central striker now continues into the next summer transfer window, and according to club insider Claret & Hugh, the Hammers boss is very keen on Premier League star Watkins.

The Latest: Moyes sets sights on Watkins…

Moyes has allegedly been ‘seriously tracking’ the 26-year-old in his quest to finally fill the striker’s position.

Watkins is the Scotsman’s top target, and despite Steven Gerrard’s side being adamant they won’t sell, it is believed that won’t stop West Ham from attempting a move.

A ‘key London Stadium insider’ told C&H: “It’s become clear Villa are not interested in selling the player but that won’t stop us trying.”

The Verdict: Move on…

There are various stumbling blocks to this move, not just Villa’s strict no sale stance, but also the fact he could cost around £60 million, according to reliable reporter Luke Hatfield.

Moyes’ interest is certainly understandable given Watkins’ status as a fairly young England international with proven goalscoring ability over the last few seasons.

He’s also been called ‘unbelievable’ by Villa pundits like Dan Bardell (via This is Futbol), but given the appear to make West Ham’s life difficult in attempts to land the striker, it could be best to move on for now and look at alternatives.

Liverpool: Matip stole the show v Everton

Liverpool defender Joel Matip was the standout player in a heated Merseyside derby that saw his side claim a 2-0 victory over rivals Everton.

Whilst he might not grab the headlines due to a great impact from Divock Origi and a goal from Andy Robertson, he really was their stand out player defensively today.

The victory keeps Liverpool within a point of title rivals Manchester City, and on a winning run that stretches to four wins from their last five in the league.

On the other hand, it leaves Everton in the relegation zone as they face a battle to stay in the Premier League. It could be the last derby on Merseyside for a while, and it wasn’t as easy as Liverpool might have thought with Everton holding them to 0-0 in the first half.

Despite the Toffees’ best efforts, Matip remained resilient at the heart of the Reds’ backline, winning 80% of his duels including every single one of his six on the ground.

The £140k-per-week star was SofaScore’s highest-rated player out of anyone on the pitch scoring 8.2 with Robertson second with 7.8.

The 30-yeard-old has been a key part of Liverpool’s on the field success this campaign and has been Jurgen Klopp’s chosen partner to Virgil van Dijk, beating off competition from new signing Ibrahima Konate as well as Joe Gomez.

He played the full 90 minutes and also had a pass accuracy percentage of 89% which was third only to fellow defender van Dijk and midfielder Thiago. His quality is massively appreciated by Liverpool fans but less so by those outside the club.

Former Premier League player Jermaine Jenas has described Matip as “under-rated”, and we agree that he probably doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

Unsurprisingly when it comes to the amount of goals conceded this season, Liverpool are second only to City, having let in just 21 all campaign and a huge part of that is because of the ability of Matip.

The Reds have already won the Carabao Cup and are still in with a chance of winning every other competition. Matip has consistently proved to be a reliable player and showed again in a tough derby game just why it’s so hard to score against Liverpool’s defence.
