India’s pink-ball Test will have to wait

New Zealand are unlikely to play a day-night Test against India this season with the BCCI announcing that all three Tests in September and October would begin at 9.30 am.Kanpur will host the first Test from September 22, followed by the second at Eden Gardens from September 30 and the third in Indore, a brand new Test venue, from October 8.The five ODIs will be played on October 16 in Dharamsala, October 19 in Delhi, October 23 in Mohali, October 26 in Ranchi and October 29 in Visakhapatnam. In April, BCCI president Anurag Thakur had announced India would host its first day-night Test during the New Zealand tour. A day later, NZC responded that nothing had been finalised. Last week, the chances of the series featuring a floodlit Test reduced further when Thakur himself conceded India were in “no hurry” to play one.New Zealand is the first of four teams – England, Australia and Bangladesh are the others – India are set to host in their 2016-17 home season, which comprises 13 Tests, eight ODIs and three T20Is. Thirteen Tests equals the record for the highest number of home Tests in a season; the only other instance was in 1979-80, also in India.New Zealand’s previous tour to India was four years ago, when they visited for two Tests and two T20 internationals. They lost the Tests 0-2 and won the T20Is 1-0.Initially, the BCCI’s press release had said Kolkata would host the third Test in October but the schedule was reworked to accommodate Durga Puja festivities.*1010 GMT, June 28, 2016. Broad senses opportunity with Smith at 3

Ahead of the Ashes some in the England camp feel the decision to promote Steven Smith to No. 3 in the batting order may weaken a significant strength in the Australian line-up

George Dobell27-Jun-20152:17

‘Smith at No. 3 is good for us’ – Broad

It can be hard to tell what is real and what is propaganda in the silly season before the Investec Ashes begins, but somewhere between the hype and hubris, it seems England really do sense an opportunity.Freed from expectation – a whitewash defeat in the last encounter takes care of that – England have been buoyed by the public reaction to their encouraging performances against New Zealand and feel that Australia might, just might, have made a tactical error that renders that somewhat more vulnerable that they might have been.Specifically, some in the England camp feel the decision to promote Steven Smith to No. 3 in the batting order may weaken a significant strength in the Australian line-up.Certainly that was the suggestion of Stuart Broad as he looked ahead to the series. Echoing the views of his former England (and Nottinghamshire) colleague, Graeme Swann, who recently expressed doubt over Smith’s technique, Broad suggested that he may find batting up the order in England an altogether more testing experience. The figures do not really support that view. Smith scored 253 runs (and was dismissed only once) in his last Test batting at No. 3, against West Indies in Jamaica, and made 111 in his first innings of the tour batting in the same position. But perhaps, Broad thinks, a Dukes ball and English conditions could prove advantageous to England.”He’s obviously had a fantastic 18 months since he’s changed his technique a bit,” Broad said. “But I think it’s an advantage for us with him coming in at No. 3 with the Dukes ball in England.”I’m certainly not doubting the quality of him as a player. He’s a wonderful player and I enjoy watching him play when I’m not bowling at him. I think if he comes in at five like Joe Root does for us there are not many weaknesses there.”But you have to have a very tight technique to bat in the top three against the Dukes ball in England and it’s up to us as an opening attack to get an early wicket and get him in early against the new ball, because he’s not had amazing success in England. I’ve got a few ideas. We’ll be looking to try and test his technique with a Dukes ball early.”Stuart Broad is eager to target Steven Smith with the new ball•Getty Images

Broad hopes the Ashes will be played on surfaces he describes as “slow seamers, not quick wickets” in the hopes that England have the experience to cope better with such conditions. And he believes England have an attack – with Ben Stokes’ all-round skills allowing England to play four seamers – that is reminiscent of the unit of 2005.”All our bowlers have the skill to seam the ball around off stump and I think our batsmen have the skill and the foot movement to play seam bowling,” he said. “Our batsmen our very sound with the seaming ball and I’d like to test the Australians’ technique with a ball moving slightly.”It’s probably the closest to the 2005 attack that England have had in 10 years. Stokesy brings that advantage of being able to bat in the top six and be a fourth seamer. It makes him an integral part of the team.”The spinner is going to play a huge role, too. We all talk about the big seamers but in England later in the summer the wickets can dry up and turn. Look at Swanny in 2013 when he was leading wicket taker and Ashley Giles, the role he played in 2005. He did a really good role.”Broad also expressed disappointment at recent comments made by Craig Kieswetter about his period in the England side. Kieswetter said the England side was divided by cliques and suggested that success had changed the players.”James Taylor was talking about that a bit in the Notts changing room,” he said. “He was a bit surprised as it’s not something he’s noticed.”When people come out and say negative things it’s a shame, because playing for England is the absolute pinnacle of your career. It’s your dream and 99.9 percent of people leave their England cap behind with the best memories of their life, apart from having kids and stuff like that.”Craig only played white ball cricket so he hadn’t spent a huge amount of time around the England set-up. I’m sure Craig has got some fantastic memories. I can only speak from my experiences, I’ve loved every minute of it and know when I retire I can have a nice glass of wine and look back on some hugely fond memories.”

Zimbabwe advertise for new coach

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has advertised for the job of national coach, starting next April

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Nov-2012Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has advertised for the job of national coach, starting next April. By implication, current coach Alan Butcher’s contract will not be renewed.”ZC wishes to advise that the position of national team coach will become vacant on April 1, 2013 … ZC is therefore inviting applications for the position,” the Zimbabwe board said in a release.Former England batsman Butcher, 58, was appointed coach in February 2010, replacing Walter Chawaguta. While not yet officially confirmed, the advertisement would suggest that the away series against West Indies in March 2013 will be Butcher’s last in the role. The board set November 30 as the deadline for those interested in filing their applications. It said that all candidates must have played first-class cricket, must have at least a recognised Level 3 coaching certificate, and must have at least five years of coaching experience at the senior level.Zimbabwe are also looking for a new coach for their Under-19 team, to replace former New Zealand allrounder Chris Harris, who stepped down from the position in October following the U-19 World Cup. The team didn’t have much success at the tournament, finishing in 15th place, above only Namibia.

NBP ease to eight-wicket win

A round-up of the third day’s play in the third round of Division One Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches in 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Oct-2011Mohammad Talha polished off Abbottabad’s lower order early on the third day and Khurram Manzoor scored a fluent century to set up National Bank of Pakistan’s (NBP) convincing eight-wicket win at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Over the first two days, the match had swayed both ways with no clear favourite emerging. But on Thursday morning, Talha – who completed his five-for – and Umaid Asif’s strikes kept Abbottabad to 185 and gave NBP the opening they needed. The batsmen did not let the bowlers down. Chasing 221, Manzoor was solid at one end, while Nasir Jamshed made a quick 38 in a half-century opening stand. Following that, Umar Amin supported Manzoor well in a century partnership to all but seal the game. NBP scored at over five runs an over and Manzoor closed out the game in only the 42nd over, with over a day still to play.Sialkot face a tough task on the final day against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZBTL), after slipping to 195 for 4 in pursuit of 527 at the Jinnah Stadium. After the drought of runs in the first innings of the Test, the deluge continued for ZBTL in their second innings on the third day. Resuming on 361 for 4 with Haris Sohail unbeaten on 26, they kicked on to 502 for 9 at over five runs an over, before declaring. The brisk scoring rate was maintained by Haris, who got to 104 off 128 balls before he was trapped lbw by Mohammad Ayub, and Zulqarnain Haider – the wicketkeeper hit a run-a-ball 33. ZBTL struck early once the chase began, but were stalled by a 97-run stand between Mohammad Yasin and Faisal Khan. However, three quick wickets followed the partnership, denting Sialkot’s chances of survival. Whether they are able to hold off ZBTL on day four will depend heavily on Faisal, who went to stumps undefeated on 73.Despite a collapse from their lower middle order, Habib Bank Limited (HBL) are on the verge of a win against Rawalpindi at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. HBL followed up the low-scoring first innings with a commendable second innings score: 376, to set the hosts 330 for a win. HBL had resumed on 237 for 2 and the overnight batsmen, Bilal Shafayat and Khaqan Asral, went on to score a century and fifty respectively. When Sulaman Qadir followed up those knocks with a blistering 81 off 46 balls, HBL looked set for a much bigger total. As they pursued quick runs though, wickets fell in a hurry, mostly to first innings’ star, Sadaf Hussain. Left-armer Sadaf took his match tally to 15 wickets, with a six-wicket haul in the second innings. HBL’s bowlers then struck with regularity to reduce Rawalpindi 159 for 7, with the new-ball pair of Fahad Masood and Sarmad Anwar doing most of the damage.Hosts Islamabad took control of their game against State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) at the Diamond Club Ground, courtesy an unbeaten century from opener Afaq Raheem. In the morning, fast bowler Shehzad Azam and left-arm spinner Imad Wasim combined to knock over the SBP tail and keep them to 193 in reply to Islamabad’s 276. With a 83-run first-innings lead cushion, Islamabad’s openers were under no real pressure and settled in to grind the SBP attack. They put on 184 before Umair Khan was lbw for 61. A 55-run stand followed between Raheem and Raheel Majeed, to give the hosts an imposing 322-run lead going into the final day.The match between Pakistan International Airlines and Faisalabad at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad looked set for a draw at the end of the penultimate day’s play. Faisalabad batted out the day, moving from 192 for 2 to 374 for 5 in reply to PIA’s 396. Farrukh Shehzad was the top scorer for Faisalabad so far, hitting 128. He was well supported by Zeeshan Butt and Faisal Bin Mubashir, who both scored half-centuries.Barring a spectacular collapse, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) should secure a win against Karachi Blues at the National Stadium on the final day, after going to stumps 151 for 3 chasing 210. Karachi Blues had resumed on 166 for 5 in their second innings, and courtesy solid cameos from Ashraf Ali, Javed Mansoor and Mohammad Sami, pushed on to 284. WAPDA were in trouble at 12 for 2 and then 40 for 3 in the chase, before Rafatullah Mohmand and Bilal Khilji steadied them. The pair put on a century stand, which was unbroken at stumps.

Mooney and O'Brien give Ireland consolation win

John Mooney’s allround effort helped Ireland seal a 20-run consolation win in the third one-day international against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club

John Mooney’s allround effort helped Ireland seal a 20-run consolation win in the third one-day international against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club.Zimbabwe wrapped up the series with a three-wicket victory in the second ODI on Tuesday but Mooney starred first with the bat – making 55 to help Ireland recover from 128 for 6 to post 244 – and then by taking two wickets to give the tourists a token win. On the cusp of victory Ireland were given a scare through an entertaining final-wicket stand between Shingirai Masakadza and Ian Nicolson but it proved not quite enough for the home side. For the third time in the series Elton Chigumbura won the toss and inserted Ireland into bat and it again looked the right move when Ed Rainsford burst through the top order – removing Paul Stirling, Andre Botha and Niall O’Brien in his first four overs to leave Ireland tottering on 40 for 3.Among the wreckage Ireland captain William Porterfield stood firm and found support from Kevin O’Brien to halt the slide. Zimbabwe, however, kept control through their spinners Graeme Cremer and the impressive Prosper Utseya, who finished with 1 for 26 from his 10-over spell.Cremer removed O’Brien before Porterfield was run out four short of a deserved half-century to leave Ireland in trouble. In keeping with the fluctuating nature of the series, Ireland fought back with Andrew White partnering Mooney in a 66-run stand for the seventh wicket as Ireland scrapped towards a competitive total.Rainsford, who was man-of-the-match in the opening contest, returned to break the stand before trapping Albert van der Merwe in front to finish with 5 for 36 but Mooney held firm until he was last man out in the final over, finishing with two fours and two sixes in his 55.Zimbabwe would have felt confident at the half-way stage having twice chased similar totals in the previous games but perhaps with the series in the bag the batsmen weren’t as switched-on as they should have been.Kevin O’Brien completed a miserable series for Hamilton Masakadza, dismissing him for a fourth-ball duck to go with his 8 and 0 in his previous two innings before trapping Brendan Taylor in front in his next over.Sean Williams and Tatenda Taibu threatened a comeback with an enterprising 70-run stand but Mooney made the key break through, castling Taibu for 22. Thereafter the Ireland spinners took control. Van der Merwe had Williams caught by fellow spinner George Dockrell for 74 off 86 balls before Dockrell ran through the lower order, picking up 3 for 41 to leave Zimbabwe 164 for 9.What looked like a formality for Ireland suddenly became a struggle as Shingirai Masakadza found support from No. 11 Ian Nicolson. The pair added 60 at better than a run a ball before O’Brien returned to remove Nicolson and leave Masakadza stranded unbeaten on 45 off 49 balls.

Irish legend Dermott Monteith dies aged 66

Dermott Monteith, Ireland’s all-time highest wicket-taker, has died at the age of 66.

Cricinfo staff06-Dec-2009Dermott Monteith, Ireland’s all-time highest wicket-taker, has died at the age of 66.In a remarkable career he played 76 times for Ireland, taking 326 wickets at 17.37, including 47 in five matches in 1971, with his left-arm spin. He took five wickets in an innings on 27 occasions, and seven times took 10 wickets in a match. His best figures came in 1973 when he took 13 wickets against The MCC at Lord’s, including a 8 for 44 in the second innings as Ireland triumphed by seven wickets. His playing career with Ireland spanned 19 years from his debut in 1965 at Lord’s, until his last appearance in 1984 against Scotland. On both occasions he made an impact with the bat, rather than the ball, testament to his all-round ability. He scored 54 against the MCC on his debut, and made 95, his highest score, on his final appearance for his country. In total he made 1712 runs at 20.63 with nine half centuries and also captained Ireland 38 times.Middlesex spotted Monteith’s ability and he played for them during the 1981 and 1983 seasons, deputising for John Emburey and Phil Edmonds when they were on England duty. He played his first game for the county aged 38 and proved more than capable, taking 24 wickets in eight Championship appearances with a best of 5 for 60 against Essex. After his playing career ended Monteith took up a leading position in the administration of Irish cricket and became a national selector. Roy Torrens, his former team-mate and the current Ireland manager, commended the confidence and skill that characterised Monteith’s career.”Dermott was in many ways ahead of his time. He was a trail-blazer in every way. He was an innovative captain, and had no fear of failure. He was always looking to make things happen, and was great to play alongside. He was quite simply a magnificent cricketer, and he was a pioneer in many ways, being one of the first Irishmen in the modern era to make a mark in county cricket.”He was very highly regarded by his Middlesex colleagues, and on my travels with Ireland, I was often asked by Mike Brearley and John Emburey how he was doing.”I probably got to know Dermott better when we both were retired and travelling around as national selectors. He was great to have as a friend, and was marvellous company. My thoughts and prayers are with his family circle at this sad time.”David Williams, the Cricket Ireland chairman, added his tribute saying: “I learned of the death of Dermott Monteith with great sadness. He was one of our very greatest players and a much valued colleague in the administration of cricket in Ireland when his playing days were over.”

Crystal Palace fans thought Patrick van Aanholt was going to miss his penalty

Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to reveal that they thought Patrick van Aanholt was going to miss his penalty against West Ham.The Netherlands international stepped up after Declan Rice was adjudged to have handled in the area, with usual penalty taker Luka Milivojevic missing through suspension.

It was the former Chelsea and Sunderland man who grabbed the ball for what would be his first ever attempt for the Eagles from 12 yards, and he made no mistake with a cool finish into the bottom left corner.

His strike handed Palace an equaliser, before they went on to win it thanks to Jordan Ayew’s predatory 87th minute effort – albeit after a lengthy VAR wait.

Despite the fact that van Aanholt scored, however, some Palace fans on Twitter weren’t too confident in the Dutchman finding the net before he slotted it home.

Let’s take a look at some of the Twitter reaction…

Arsenal fans react to Xavi’s intriguing comments about football management

[ad_pod ]

As a player, Xavi Hernandez was one of the best midfielders to grace the game.

Across his career, the 39-year-old made over 800 appearances for Barcelona and Al Sadd and won a whole host of trophies, including the Champions League on four separate occasions.

For Spain, it could be argued his record was even more impressive. He earned 133 caps for La Roja and won the World Cup once, as well as the European Championships twice.

He retired earlier this year and made his first foray into management with Al Sadd. It seems that he would be open to managing Arsenal in the future, though.

He told Sky Sports in an interview on Monday: “Obviously if I had to choose, I would choose a big team, [Manchester] City or United, Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham. Also, [Jurgen] Klopp and [Mauricio] Pochettino and Unai Emery, many people who have gone there are doing an extraordinary job.”
